I just had my annual skin check at the dermatologist. No issues this year because I’ve been better at using sunscreen daily. The doctor did tell me they are finding the chemical sunscreens can lead to hair loss around the forehead. Another reason to stick to the mineral base.

I tried the Maelove for the first time yesterday. So far so good! It was easy to spread and I did not get a whitish cast. My skin is medium-light, though.

I wear a facial moisturizer sunscreen daily, and purchase BB cream or foundation with it as well. For workouts, I used a more serious water resistant formula for my face.

Based on the new research, I've thrown out anything with Oxybenzone, since it was found in the blood in concentrations 50-100% higher than the other chemicals.

NOTE: I had a severe reaction to micronized titanium dioxide (mineral sunscreen). I broke out in a horrifying crusty rash. I suspect these particles are small enough to slip through the barrier. My reaction is unusual (I wasn't on any meds at the time), and I tolerate regular titanium dioxide that is my BB cream and foundation.

Thanks for posting this. I have been skeptical to sunscreen chemicals for many years and am glad I seldom need to wear sunscreen. Wearing some clothes and a hat, or simply staying in the shadow, is usually enough where I live.

I can't use the chemical sunscreens because they aggravate my rosacea. I have tried many of the drugstore brands of mineral sunscreen and have not been happy with either the white cast to my skin or how they "sit" on my skin.
I am happier with the formulations that are tinted - have tried Cetaphil's, Suntegrity's, a few others I found on Amazon and am trying Purlisse. It's hard to find a good skin tone match.

Interesting article. It is so hard to know what to do. I totally believe that it absorbs into the blood stream but 10 or so years ago I had skin cancer removed from my cheek so I wear facial moisturizer with sunscreen religiously. Sunscreen on my body is much less necessary here in Michigan, pretty much only on summer days when I am outside all day, at the beach or something. The mineral ones seem like they would be worth a try for sure.

I had an allergic reaction to chemical sunscreen and have always had to use the mineral version plus covering up. Cerave is my year round favorite. The dermatologist recommended it many years ago and I use both their moisturizer and sunblock.

It is a tricky one because not wearing any sunscreen may put you at greater risk....... especially down here where the UV is worse.

I do agree that covering up with hats and long sleeves is sensible rather than excessive sunscreen use.

I've been concerned about this since I found out a sunscreen a friend recommended is bad for the coral reefs and possibly bad for me. I need to find something new. I tend to stay mostly covered up, but if I go outside to garden, the hat and then the gloves soon come off. I will make note of some of these recommendations and try them.

I’ve used the LaRoche mineral sunscreen for a couple of years now ever since I first spotted it in a French pharmacy. The whiteish cast is faint when I first smooth on the lotion, but disappears once I lightly rub the product into my skin. The pharmacist who recommended the product offered a couple of tips for applying mineral sunscreens:

Don’t squirt and slather mineral sunscreens like you would with a thicker chemical lotion. Mineral sunscreens are more liquid, and, since they sit on top of the skin, require a different application technique. Start by shaking the product and pouring a quarter-size amount in your hand, then use your fingers to dot it on an area. Smooth the product to a thin film, then move onto the next area. The whiteish cast helps you see what is covered and what is bare. Once you have covered your face, ears, and neck, gently massage the product into the surface layer of your skin to get rid of the whiteish cast. This rubbing smooths out the mineral layer so it becomes translucent and is invisible.

If you aren’t sure you have applied enough sunscreen, opt for two thin coats (with a drying period in between) instead of one thicker coat. Using two coats makes it easier to spread out the layers so they become translucent.

I don't mind the white cast of the mineral based sunscreens since my skin is quite white. Before I started treating my Rosecea, my face 'looked' sunburned all the time and the mineral base knocked it down to a rosy colour. Honestly, I'll accept some risk with topical chemicals that I eventually wash off over cancer roulette.

I use either Skinceuticals or LaRoche Posay. But couldn't anything you put on your skin be absorbed? There is a law that protects companies from disclosing what chemicals comprise the fragrances used in products. Hopefully that will change in the future

I agree that the mineral sunscreens are a better bet - yet many of them leave a really gray-white sheen on the skin -- hoping some of them don't. I used to use a papaya and coffee infused lotion that helped some and there is the "trick" of taking a baby aspirin before sun exposure but overall it seems like either slowly building up a light tan or wearing SPF clothing and hats may be the only two real solutions if you live in a sunny climate as many do.

Heck, if I can wear snake boots out in the heat I guess I can wear SPF clothing. lol - after just ordering my first pair of snake boots and getting them yesterday - SO stylish in lace up camo.

Thanks texstyle, I have avoided sunscreen for years because of this.
Even though I am fair , I tan up quite naturally in the sun .

This info needs to be out there. This is sprayed and rubbed all over children !

I’ve switched to mineral sunscreens. A friend who has had several cancerous growths removed told me her dermatologist told her to use only mineral. That, plus the fact that chemical sunscreens are bad for coral reefs made me change. I can’t say I like it, though. I’m still trying out different types.
