Stagiaire Fash - I think it is a metallic blue. I will probably wear with white sneakers, a woven top and denim jacket. I just have to see how the waistband sits. I did watch a video funnily enough on facebook about pleated skirts which I can't share as its on facebook. According to one lady the most important thing is that the waist band sits on the natural waist and there is a good flat waistband.

Zaeobi, probably would be more successful at retaining the pleats if the waistband were removed and length cut off on the top, then waistband reattached.

Rachylou, yeah, it’s so interesting to map things out. I would think the super-pale version that Inge, Sal, chewy spaghetti, Zaoebi, Irina, and I are are describing would be exactly in your hipster neighborhood.

Sally, what color, and how are you planning to style it?

Interesting that this cut seems to inspire such colorful patterns and very bright colors—so many beautiful examples in this thread. I suppose the pale versions are kind of a punk reaction, a made-ya-look kind of thing that there’s just a whisper where you’d otherwise expect an exuberant shout.

Zaoebi, I am not the seamstress or tailor you are looking for, but my bet is you’d have to cut the extra off the bottom, then hem them with lightweight facing tape.

After the success of my winter pleated skirt, I am thinking of trying one in my 50th year. Lets see how it goes. I ordered one as I"m thinking of adding it in as a statement piece for summer. Waiting to try it on.

They are a classic here in Japan. Been around for as long as I've been here. Uniqlo here always has them. In fact, I have a mini version about 7 years old.

I like sunray pleats because they allow for ease of movement whilst also adding textural interest. But I don't own many because I have a hard time finding them in truly maxi proportions - they're popular here at midi length & in pastels (neither of which work for me). So I own just one brown pleated maxi skirt for now, lol.

Question (for anyone who knows sewing): I did find a few maxi skirts with a chiffon pleated overlay but they're quite long on me. Is it possible to take up the hem on such material, or will the pleats ruin it?

They have been here for a few years - I have tried a few on but haven’t found my one yet. A good friend of mine has a navy one worn with sneakers and usually a tee shirt, another friend has a pewter one that is lovely with camel boots and a sweater. I like them a lot as they are elegant but not fussy.

Wow, so many cool patterns.

It sounds like the trend Irina and I have seen really hasn’t spread everywhere—it’s always interesting to figure out why things travel one place & not another

Angie, I wasn’t paying a lot attention to fashion in the 90s so I don’t remember sunray skirts from then, but I do remember broomstick skirts and sundresses, with were similar but with less precise pleats. I had a gold skirt and an orange dress that I loved.

Very few people here wear sunrays, although there are lots of skirts and dresses in Summer. It’s all about relaxed jeans and wide crops. Lots of shackets already too. We have the climate.

I wore sunrays in the ‘80s with a sweatshirt or long baggy pullover, and flat white oxfords. I loved it! :)

I love my own sunray pleated skirt too.

Besides myself I haven't seen anybody else wearing them around me.
In 2018 I bought the 2 blue ones from BR and recently bought the blues/burgundy one. They are all different lengths and fit differently( the pleats are more knife pleats on the blue and whit one and sunray in the other two and the recent one has a wider waist band) but I think that you really have to be ok with the volume they create
I like to wear them old school with a button down tucked in but will wear them with sweaters this fall if I can find the right ones.

Funny you mention that. I saw my first pleated midi skirt "in the wild" just two weeks ago. I have only ever seen them online/in fashion mags/on TV, and funnily enough my first thought when I saw it was "well, that was very 2015". Lol! Like I'm the expert! Not even true either.. The blonde woman (40ish) who wore it was dressed in all black, the skirt was in a shiney fabric and the sweater was a heavy knit. Very elegant!

Good point about the color, Irina. They are generally cream, ivory, pale pink, light blush….. very light shades that hint at color. The shoes are light colored too.

Bijou, pretty! The yellow and rainbow are cut like the ones I’m describing. As Irina pointed out, this is a very specific skirt we are seeing. I enjoy pleated skirts too, with their swoosh.

The phrase Inge used in her description of today’s blogger is new to me; I like it.

A few years ago (I think it was 2017), there were a lot of pleated skirts in the forum, but I didn’t see many around me in Tampa. This summer in Berlin there was an explosion of skirts just like Georgette’s, almost always with athletic shoes that clearly don’t have that “fashion sneaker” look and either a tucked-in T-shirt/tank top or a top that just comes to the waistband but isn’t cropped so short that it show the wearer’s belly. It’s a look generally worn by women in their 20s & 30s, but I see no reason it needs to be constrained to that age group.

Do you see these skirts worn where you are? How and by whom?
