I have the REI Sahara hoodie and like it. I’m in a size M (usually M to L in most clothes) and it’s not too tight, maybe try both sizes to compare?

I always go with my larger size in Patagonia, otherwise the shoulders are too narrow. And loose is better for staying cool!

These suggestions are great, thank you!

LaPed, I was looking at that Patagonia one. Unfortunately the store near me doesn’t offer it, but I can order online. I often size up in these kinds of items because i want less fabric contact with my skin, and I also like a little extra sleeve length. I think I’d size up to a L even though I fall squarely in the M of their sizing chart. How is the fit in your experience?

My family has used several different brands over the years (Mountain Hardwear, Free Fly, Columbia, Patagonia), and the Patagonia Capilene is my favorite in terms of fit, fabric texture, durability, and breathability. Here we are on the JMT (at the trailhead at Cottonwood Pass, and at the terminus in Yosemite a few weeks later) in September. Hat plus shades plus hood, pretty much all day everyday on that trip!

I like Columbia for SPF gear when I ride. They have held up well and the materials are usually comfortable. I find Columbia sometimes runs small.

I have the Columbia one in that exact color. Works very well as a beach cover keeping off the hot sun. I like it because it’s looser than a rash guard type shirt and a ladies golf shirt quarter zip which I’ve also used for the same sun protection on the beach or hiking.
It may come down to actual wearing in the field to see how closely fitting and/or fabric weight you prefer.

Oh btw I also have a rash guard that seems more cooling but the material is not as comfortable for hiking etc. I wear that in the water or at the beach only. I think that is one of the decisions - whether you want a super lightweight rash guard- like material or something that is more like a regular shirt. The ll bean ones have some lyocell which cuts down on the feeling of slick polyester.

I have two from ll bean. (Sun smart? Something like that.) They have been great and held up really well to hiking, camping etc. I agree the hood does the trick over a baseball cap or instead of a regular hat. I like not having to slather on the sunscreen. These can get a little too hot but I still wear them in high 90-degree weather. Might not recommend for a humid environment.

Coolibar is very good. I have a hooded rash guard that is very lightweight. Also their protection will not wash out.

Clara, that one looks nice — good deal! I’ve been looking at Farmers Defense too. The one with the butterfly sleeves is really cute.

JAileen, I agree about a lighter color! I don’t love heat anyway so anything I can do to keep cool while active is a bonus. Hence my light aqua or seafoam choices above — I’d probably go for a light blue or green.

Teresa, I’ll definitely look at Mountain Hardwear — thanks!

Roberta, yes, I like the hoodie for the same reason — more coverage when needed. I have a sleeveless hoodie from TitleNine that is great for layering. Sometimes while walking the Camino, I wore the hood of my Uniqlo hoodie up when my hat was uncomfortable or as a little extra neck protection over my baseball cap. I just want to make sure the hoodie isn’t too high on my neck — that can be annoying!

I'm looking at a few at REI and at L L Bean. I like to throw on something at the beach that will protect the back of my neck and shoulders, which I never manage to cover entirely with sunblock. The hood does the trick where a rashguard isn't enough coverage.

Mountain Hardwear is my pick for sun shirts and hoodies. I’ve had several—they have appealing colors and are extremely lightweight and breathable. I live in the desert and always wear long sleeves when hiking and biking.

My husband and I both have them, from REI. In Galapagos, I preferred the regular hiking shirt because the hood felt too warm, but my husband wore his. Get as light a color as you can. It will absorb less heat. Here in the high desert, the growth industry is skin cancer removal, and I myself just had a few things biopsied.

I have this inexpensive sunshirt (Baleaf) and I’m very happy with it. When I bought it two years ago, I wanted to see if I liked the style before getting a “nicer” one. It’s great, it has worked out so well that I haven’t gotten a nicer one lol ! It’s very lightweight, washes well, and hang-dries quickly. I’ve worn it at Burning Man and to hike and I have not gotten burned. Because it’s thin, the outline of my sports bra is somewhat visible, as one might expect from thin fabric, even though the shirt isn’t clingy. Farmers Defense has some cute sun shirts that I have my eye on.

On my recent trip to Joshua Tree, I started thinking about shifting some of my hiking gear to more sun-protective pieces. I saw a woman wearing a super lightweight SPF hoodie that looked very appealing. Has anyone here worn one they would recommend? Not a zip-front, but a pullover that can be worn with nothing but a bra underneath. I’ve looked online and have options bookmarked, but wondered if anyone has experience to make a recommendation. Examples below. A priority would be *very lightweight* so I would actually wear it when temps soar.
