Bucket hats are a no. Straw hats are a yes. Floppy hats will hide your face, something with a smaller brim will shade your eyes, but won't hide you. I like a smaller brim and I usually get mine from Shein.com since they usually cost less than $10 with shipping.

I like ones that I can wash, so I stick to the gear brands at REI. Sunday Afternoons and Coolibar make lightweight washable hats with good UPF.

My 13 year old is indeed wearing a bucket hat she got at of the mall stores aimed at teens. I’m so 90s I didn’t really realize they had gone out of style? But it’s true I haven’t worn one in years, and I’m now wondering if I could make one work, because the point about them being squishable is so true. I got a great straw hat on my last resort vacation, which feels like walking under a sunbrella, but just thinking about packing it for my summer holiday, or what to do with it once I’m inside a restaurant, is a bit daunting.
I saw someone wearing a cute wide brimmed visor the other day. But they almost feel like one of those things where you have to be either young or old for it to work.

Like Kathie, I need hats that are sized since one-size-fits-all is too small....

I have a Tilley (thanks JAileen) and a Duluth gardening hat with a really oversized brim. The Duluth is not so fashionable, but its very effective. I took the Tilley on vacay and it’s fantastic.

Love the Brixton, Kathie. Am taking a look.....petting the screen since I don’t need any hats right now...

You want something that breathes, allows for air flow but fits on your head...sometimes not easy to find. If you live in a breezy area, a chin strap is helpful, also on a boat. If you travel and need to pack your hat, packable ones are available. I like a straw hat with a small brim best. It needs to fit a small head so children’s sun hats are best.

I have a hard time with hats! I tend to wear hats from Wallaroo because they have small sizes, and I also wear baseball caps and sun precaution tops with high collars to protect my neck.

Another Tilley fan here. I can squish them in my bag and they come out fine. When it’s windy, I use the chin strap. Also, REI carries them.

I got this Brixton one, and have worn it a lot. Comes in sizes, which is a huge advantage for me, since one-size-fits-all hats are generally too small for me.

i love bucket hats....in large part becuase they are washable, squishable and lightweight. i bought the Patagonia hat this year, and own a similiar LLBean hat in white (mine is many years old and nylon instead of cotton so even lighterweight). i love the look of straw hats but have found, at least for me, they don't have any longevity becuase they are difficult to keep clean and don't hold their shape unless treated with kid gloves....

Laura, I had a laugh at seeing this in NetaPorter - "Buckets of Style" the bucket hat has made a comeback with the fashion set. I think I may still have a bucket hat lurking in my hat collection... so if you want to be totally fashion - that is the way to go - they are quite practical too.

I bought the Nordstrom Straw Floppy Hat in ivory a couple weeks ago, and it was a lifesaver on a trip to New Mexico, Utah, and Arizona. The sun is so BRIGHT out West! The wide brim shielded my face and neck, and the adjustable ribbon inside allowed me to tighten for breezier conditions, although post-trip I will likely sew on two ribbons to tie under my chin (very Scarlett O'Hara at the bar-be-que). The hat did get dusty--open jeep tour of Monument Valley--and I was able to soak it in the sink with some OxiClean detergent and get it clean without killing it. The one thing: I folded it in half to pack, and I wound up with fold lines. Not terrible, but I felt bad "wrecking" the hat.

For the windiest moments, I used a Tilley with strings to secure to my chin.

I got a sun hat from J. Crew a couple of years ago that doesn't look dorky. I have a smaller head, and J. Crew carries children's sizes, so I got a girls' large (or XL, whatever the largest size was).

I've also gotten some decent sun hats from American Eagle. And I even have a nice one from Bed Bath and Beyond, believe it or not.

Here is what I ended up with after my post asking the same question earlier this year.

#1 Columbia Splendid Summer hat (about $35 CAD)
#2 in the wild
#3 Tilley Hikers hat (larger brim) (about $115 CAD)
#4 in the wild

I'm wearing them both A LOT! The Columbia is my 'Meghan Markle fashion' hat. It has an elastic bit inside the brim that makes it a comfortable 'one size fits all'. The Tilley is my urban trekking and gardening hat. It probably gets 3 wears for every time I wear the straw hat. It comes in 1/4 inch hat size increments. I hardly know I'm wearing it. Both are light weight and protect my face and back of neck from the sun.
