Tilley hats are great! I lost mine within their two year period and they gave me a new one for 50% off!
I've also gotten a few hats from https://www.hatsunlimited.com/ and have always been happy.

I redid the crown the other week into something like this, although not as dramatically teardrop shaped. I had more of a cowboy shape last year. It looked incredibly stupid when it arrived. Really tall -- I looked like a conehead.

My absolute priority is UV protection -- I'm a strawberry blonde living in Texas, with a family history of skin cancer, so I don't mess around with sun exposure.

When my hair was short I also struggled with hats....it is easier now it is chin length. You will have to try them on, but there will be something!
I mostly wear two types of summer hats - large floppy hats in a variety of materials, or caps. Caps are for exercise or practical purposes and the floppy hats for parties or the beach.
What I have a gap for is a smart sunhat for the city.

I have a Tilley in a mushroom colour that is ruched, I love it. Although I wish it was more of a 'colour'.

I can't locate it on their site and only bought it last summer in a boutique so I wonder if it was a hangover from another season.

I wear it with shorts, with maxis and most summer casual, I was a bit self conscious but my 18 year DD compliments me on it ( the ultimate fashion critic lol )

I have lots of thick short hair and hate regular baseball caps, as a reference.

I have a very elegant sun hat with a black scarf tie I was gifted for my honeymoon. 11 years later it is still beautiful. I wear this to the beach or out on summer dates with DH.

Wow, so much sun hat wisdom. Thank you everyone!

Beck, LOL at your Sunbody hat. It inspired me to dig out the only structured hat I own. It's a dark brown felt-type hat from Australia via Sun Valley Idaho, that looks like a cowboy hat. And, it's actually flattering and fits my head. Can't remember what inspired me to purchase it, as there aren't a lot of roundups here on the cul-de-sac, but it is a nice hat. Maybe I should look for its straw equivalent.

I really am going to just need to try on hats and narrow down the shape. Thank you so much everyone for your input and ideas

I'm a big fan of my Pendelton Breezer hat. It's similar to the Tilley but without the strap. I have a small head but the medium is snug. I like a hat to stay on when I bend over so my hat hair stays concealed.

I wear a big Sunbody straw hat most of the time -- it's this model although I have reshaped it so it doesn't have the top pinched like that. I also reshaped the brim down the whole way around in order to get better coverage.

I also wear an Akubra, although it's not as cool as the straw. And a bunch of military cadet caps in spring and autumn -- I like the look but worry about limited sun protection with them.

I have a HUGE head (at the very upper end or just above the size range in men's hats; women's never work) and super short hair, and hats work out OK.

CC: sundayafternoons.com, I have the adventurer hat. It's serious sun protection with a brim that points downward like an umbrella and the back has a neck drape that velcros up. They have a ton of sun hats and sell sunprotective clothing. solumbra and coolibar are also sunprotective clothing sites that sell a lot of hats. Tilley is great for you as they run big. I have a little pin head and they run too big for me but nice styles. I also have a barmah hat (leather australian) but it is not as good for side tangential light. Good luck. Lots of nice options to choose from so hopefully you'll find something you love!!

Probably not helpful, but if you find yourself in the UK at some point, definitely go hat shopping. They have a much better selection there.

I got my red hat (and my navy English wedding hat) at The Hat Box in Oxford, UK. The brand is a German brand called Seeberger and it fits generously (I have a very large head), but i don't think they sell them on this side of the pond.

Rachylou: What is a bonnet style visor?

Classically Casual: If you're looking for more gear-ish hats for serious camping, REI is a good place to start. (And some of their hats are actually fairly fashionable, like this one: http://www.rei.com/product/864.....hat-womens) I have a Wallaroo Hat Company hat that I don't mind. (My problem is that I tend to get too hot in hats so I may have to start looking at visors.)

If you're looking for something casual, I see hats all over the place: Nordstrom, Target, Macy's, JC Penney, etc. Just a matt

I have a Tilley hat. It has ventilation at the top and a good brim. It's also packable and machine washable. If it's windy it has a chin strap. I bought mine at Scheels. I had a Columbia hat, but the brim got too floppy.

Funny, all the hat posts! With Ascot starting on the 17th, I've been thinking about hats all day.

Haven't figured how to link using an iPad (maybe I can't?). Anyway, look at: Dorfman-Pacific.com for inspiration.

I have 2 Scala Collezione cotton canvas wide brim hats I wear gardening. I find the wide brim is perfect for in the garden and on the beach, but is too wide and sometimes blocks my view when worn out and about (knocked my head getting into a mini-van taxi). I have short hair and glasses too, but these hats have kind of a Lady Edith/English Garden Lady look I like. (I want a floral gardening smock too!). They make a shorter brimmed version that is quite cute. They are washable, which is a bonus.

I also have a fleece lined bucket hat that sheds rain for travelling of hiking in woods. DH has a whole collection of Indiana Jones type hats: straw, canvas, felt that he wears for golf or in the bush. He also does the ball hat.

A hat is a good idea for any walking in the woods as protection against ticks! A head wrap or bandana might work as well.

I've seen hats at Target and Nordstrom. I'm still wearing one from Target from a few years ago.

Good luck.

I like visors because they're ventilated. Ones that are bonnet style, not tennis style. Also, you can sit and lean back in them.

This summer's vacation will include substantial outdoor time in potentially sunny, hot weather without shelter. I think I should finally get a sun hat.

Vanity has kept me away from hats. I have a large head, short hair, and wear glasses. I haven't found a style that looks good, though I haven't tried very hard either.

Anna's hat post earlier today reminded me how much style hats can add to a person's outfit.

Any pointers for finding a sun protective hat that's also festive & fun? (I'll be camping, so clothing will be casual.) Also, any retail sources you recommend where I can start the search? This will need to be in person I think.
