This is a really interesting thread! I am pretty much in line with Suz, or as my Mom used to say, the only thing she learned about Canada in school was in Gaelic:

An-fhuar sa gheimhreadh, an-te sa samhradh - "very cold in winter; very hot in summer". How succinct was that geography lesson!

We barely have transitional weather; it just swings wildly from cold to hot before settling in for the winter or summer season.

To me, transitional dressing (the most fun kind) is what I'd define as "seasonally confused lite" - booties but without thick socks, blazer and jeans with slides, shorts and a light sweater with sneakers. And layers, which I avoid in both summer and winter - too hot in summer and too bulky under a puffer in winter!

Interesting - thanks for sharing, @La Pedestrienne! I always knew about the ozone layer thinning, but HK isn't close to any poles. I do always get respiratory problems whenever I go back home to the UK & then return (I even got ulcers & a bad cough when I first moved here!), so my body certainly doesn't agree with the air here...

It's true! There are places where the sun is more damaging than others; it has to do with how much damage humans have done to the ozone layer (so yes, pollution is a factor, along with proximity to poles, because the ozone layer is naturally thinner at the earth's poles):
https://www.nationalgeographic.....zone-layer

Suntiger, I have burned here at home with as little as a half hour of exposure, and have been that way my entire life! I have the kind of skin that will freckle and burn, and after a couple of days, if I avoid peeling, the burn becomes a slight tan. I cannot achieve a real tan so I no longer try. In my teens I certainly tried, since my two best friends had beautiful olive skin and tanned in no time — of course this was back in the 80s when a tan was so much more desirable than it is now. I wear sunscreen for outdoor activities — or at least I mean to! Sometimes I get out on a bike ride and then realize I didn’t put any on my arms.

You're probably right. I'm surprised Hong Kong would be harsher than Brazil and Pakistan!

I just don't really remember people I know burning, aside from at the beach or pool, even my very fair skinned blonde friend. Sunscreen was just something we'd use at the beach/pool.

This probably sounds like a tinfoil hat conspiracy, but I feel the sun's effect is very different in different places. When I used to live in Brazil, I could be out all day on Copacabana Beach but would only turn a deeper, golden brown. Even in Pakistan, I would tan but it was usually more yellow than brown. The first time I ever got sunburnt was here in Hong Kong - I'm not sure if it's the pollution or what, but the sun here feels really harsh on my skin. I'm starting to invest in big hats & long sleeved hiking clothes here for that reason

PS - Sorry for the tangent!

Where I live summers are hot, but it is a dry heat, so not sticky. We have a mantra “Slip, Slop, Slap” being slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat to protect our skin from the damaging sun. In full summer heat, I can get sunburn after 10 minutes of exposure, so staying covered up in light layers is what works for me.

I think my temp range is not very extreme / it is 12 C here/ 54F mid winter and probably goes to 30 c ( 86f) on a hot day. We do get to 0 (32f) a few days a year. It can be damp in winter and humid in summer.

Most of my clothes are transitional - I add in coats, hats and a couple of seasonal pieces in winter, and shorts, sundresses and lightweight skirts and crops in summer. I also swap out shoes.

But I could wear jeans, tee, sneakers and a blazer on 80-90 percent of days all year and be warm or cool enough taking off the jacket. Maybe throw in a scarf and I could do almost every day. But I don’t - I like the ebb and flow and making the most of the seasonal variations.

What Brooklyn and Janet and LisaP said -- in my (limited) personal experience, it's not the heat, it's the humidity! Or, at least, it's not only the heat. Humidity plays a huge role in how hot you feel and how covered (or not) you want to be.

For much of my life I lived in southern (and then, later, eastern) Ontario. You might think "cold" when you think Canada, and you'd be right. But southern Ontario summers can be almost as steamy as Baltimore's. They are just shorter overall...and there are usually breaks between the really hot spells -- a few cooler days. Temperatures might read in the 30s (high 80s for you) but the humidity can be high.

In weather like that, I am 100% with you -- a "summer" outfit (typically, in southern Ontario, mid-June to mid-September) is breezy, cotton or linen, without sleeves (if possible), without added layers, sometimes without jewellery because it just sticks to the skin!

Or, at least, that's how I need to dress if there is no arctic AC. Air conditioning makes it a lot more complicated. Yes, I'll carry a topper, but there's still a risk of frozen toes in sandals. Ugh.

In Ontario, I barely ever needed clothes that I might call "transitional" -- i.e. sleeved lightweight tops, closed summery shoes. As Jules said -- it was sandals or boots.

I now live in the Pacific Northwest. Here, the climate is completely different. Summer is still June-mid-September. Except... May can be surprisingly warm, in the high teens or 20sC (70s). And June can be weirdly cool -- as low as 13C. (55 F). So I I do need more covered yet lightweight items and I might need to wear them on any day of the year. I'll favour them in different colours during different seasons, though.

The light is summer light, and the air is different. So that's a factor in how I want to dress as well.

Transitional isn’t a concept I consider when looking at my clothes. Everything is ‘out’ and I pick an outfit based on activities and environment. Pants might get swapped out for shorts if the temps rise over the course of the day, and a jacket added if it gets cool. I wear white year ‘round, and a sleeveless top can have another layer for warmth. A long sleeved button down can be a more comfortable choice for a hot sunny day than a jersey T and boots can ‘close the gap’ for cropped pants in cool weather. Summer is a date on the calendar - June 20th in the northern hemisphere. :-)

I know it’s an old trope, but around here it truly is the humidity more than the heat itself. Someday I would like to live somewhere without this stifling level of dampness in the summer.

Haha as someone that likes to stay pretty covered year round, I'd say my biggest seasonal indicators are probably fabric/ material. We get subtropical temperatures of 30C+ with 90%+ humidity in Hong Kong's summer - there isn't really a clear cut 'transitional' season like spring or autumn, but I do deal with very cold AC & typhoons here.

I prefer lightweight & breathable fabrics for my tops all year round, because my torso is where I get the most sweaty (if that's TMI sorry lol, but I know everyone's bodies & sweat zones are different & highly personal). For toppers & thermal underlayers however, I can get away with other materials in transitional weather. I go for jackets & blanket scarves in colder weather or typhoons, but more diaphanous & lightweight scarves in high summer (to be worn like a shawl).

I'll also use different accessories to mark the changes - a wide brimmed straw hat in the summer & a crossbody bag, to avoid having clothes stick to me, but a more substantial bag (that I can hug) in cooler weather.

I also like bright accessories, like a chartreuse bag or orange flats, in the summer. I don't wear (for example) much burgundy in high summer, because it's very difficult to actually find such colours in 100% cotton or natural fibres.

I wear sleeveless tops and shorts when it's over 75 degrees F for thebetter part of the day. In our temperate climate that's no more than half of summer I think.
Let's say I consider anything below 50 F winter, again because that's how our winters are, and that's when I reliably wear wool sweaters and/or undershirts and an insulated coat.
Anything in between is transitional! Leather jackets, booties & lots of cotton, mostly long sleeves and trousers (or pantyhose).
Wether to wear a topper or not, to me has more to do with temp variation throughout the day or from outdoors to indoors. I usually have a seasonally appropriate topper on or with me :).

I used to have a rule: no shorts until the Temperature reaches 100F. Now that I've spent the last year and a half literally working in a fridge, I'm dying of heatstroke if the the temperature rises above about 70F, so I'll put on shorts when it hits the upper 80s. Growing up in the American south really warped my idea of "hot"

I think humidity in summer is more of a problem than heat. I find a 32C/90F day with high humidity much more uncomfortable than a 40C/104F day that’s dry (low humidity). We rarely have cool days in summer. I don’t wear long sleeves or long pants, at least not during the day. They just start sticking to me the moment I leave the house. I might wear them at night, in the cool of the morning or indoors. 20C/68F starts to feel cool to me and less than 18C/64F feels cold. A 13C/55F day is considered a very cold day here. In Autumn and Winter I have a high tolerance for outfits that would be considered seasonally confused by many eg sleeveless wool knit dress with boots and jacket. That’s because while it’s cold overnight it’s not unusual for daytime temps to reach the early 20s (70F +) in winter. So long sleeves start to feel too warm and constricting for me then.

Mid-80s F is where it starts to become a warm day for me and I’ll go without a sweater for awhile. But there are other things that signal summer to me - how long it stays warm (all night or not), cloud cover, cold or warm winds. The main difference in my clothing I suspect is the length of puffer I wear, lololol
