Not sure what you’re trying to say with looser vs tighter fits. I prefer tailored fits that lie close to the body but are not binding or tight in any way.

It sounds like you've come a long way over two years in really drilling down on what you want for summer. That's a nice set of pieces. You were smart to duplicate that one dress. Summer items need a lot more laundering, for sure!

I have sort of the opposite problem in that I love summer so much that I have too much stuff for it. My only excuse is that the items do fall apart faster....

Janet - I'm with you, I can't even look at denim most of the summer. II have denim toppers for inside the office and one pair of denim shorts. That's all!

Thanks for all the comments! It looks like I'm not alone in feeling a bit iffy about summer dressing!

LaPed: Good luck finding your perfect easy dress -- and keep us posted!

Carla: I missed that post of yours -- thanks for linking! Sound like you're really honing your formula, as well. Shopping early in the season might be just the ticket, but I was finding it hard to locate good pieces at retailers early this year. Looking forward to your wld card!

Janet: Yup to this! "I like more structure and edge, and it’s hard to have those things in tank tops, shorts, skirts and casual summer dresses. I tolerate my summer style and definitely feel like it’s not my strongest season at all.I like more structure and edge, and it’s hard to have those things in tank tops, shorts, skirts and casual summer dresses.

Someone else who has a well thought out summer wardrobe plan! I admire how carefully you’ve evaluated and curated your pieces. I’m much more haphazard and honestly, most of my summer stuff isn’t really fit for work. I swap out merino sweaters for mesh tops and wrap tops for summer work days. Weekends it’s anything goes! I’m in jeans year round!

You have developed a solid approach to your summer wardrobe — well done! I envy those of you who can even think of wearing jeans in summer. Today was 92 degrees and I wore gear (walking and exploring with bird nerd friends!), and I was reminded why I really don’t like summer dressing. I don’t particularly like how my arms or legs look but I live with it in summer because it’s just too hot and humid to try to cover up.

I feel like I’m always struggling with my summer wardrobe because it’s not my ideal style. I like more structure and edge, and it’s hard to have those things in tank tops, shorts, skirts and casual summer dresses. I tolerate my summer style and definitely feel like it’s not my strongest season at all.

Very nice! I like your summer packing capsule (in Finds) too. I posted about my summer stuff earlier this week https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....ss-and-wiw. Shopping for summer early in the year was a game changer, and for once I’ve been excited to wear what I have, while I do the activities I want to do - rather than be shopping for something because I have nothing to wear!

If/when B&M becomes possible (we are still under stay at home orders) I’ll hit up the the small indi shops and thrift stores. I’m feeling the need for a wildcard, and I allow myself one new boho item each summer - LOL!

Wow, all of your Finds here seem to slot effortlessly into your signature style. Crisp, calm, classics-with-a-twist. Smart duplications too; they bring a lot of coherence. So inspiring!

I think I need to be done summer shopping for this year, as I've already added plenty of pieces that have a short wearing window. I'd happily shop for summer all year long, but only have a few months to actually wear my warm-weather additions, so whatever strategy I apply is mostly just reminding myself not to go overboard. And seeking out season-spanning pieces like cotton knitwear, substantial linen, and fun closed-toe shoes. The only thing left on my list is one simple t-shirt or tank dress for wearing on true dog days, but I don't need to go hunt one down. That ON chambray popover dress looks absolutely perfect!

Firecraker: thanks for the kind words! It's a journey. I'm actually packing for a month-long trip away at the moment, and agree: it definitely brings clarity. Very satisfying to see things that I have that are working well, but also noticing what still needs work.

Rachy: Fit and flare seems like a good fit for your preppy persona!

Fashintern: Thanks! I'm all for dressing the body that you're in, and also have learned from Angie that slightly looser fits are both more comfortable and more elegant, fwiw. Berlin summer weather is definitely different from New England: wish I were there!

That rope edge on the tank top is really nice. Summer here is usually mild, with the occasional stretch of hot days. I’d like another summer dress, but can’t say I really need one. But I’ve taken off 2 of the 5 kilos I wanted to lose, and am realizing I might “get to” go shopping for shorts when the rest of it is gone. Yay?

Notsaf, I admire your clarity on what works for you and what you want for summer dressing.

I like your Old Navy popover dress. That seems the perfect summer dress to me!

I recently realized that my summer clothes are a mish-mash of styles, and there are a lot of items from which I find it difficult to assemble coherent outfits. My realization came when I thought about packing for a summer trip. If I can't come up with a travel capsule, that tells me something has gone awry in my wardrobe! Part of this problem stems from the fact that summer is indeed my least favorite season to dress for--though I love the warmth of the season and all the outdoor activities it involves.

JAileen: Sounds like you have your formula worked out, too! I'm with you in preferring not to have everything too bare at once: I find it helps manage the heat, as well, so long as the fabrics are not too heavy/unbreathable. I have a skort that I wear hiking, which I'm looking forward to wearing again this week!

Slimcat: sounds like you have a good formula! I love my Paige denim jeans, but have never tried any of their other pieces, though I always like the look. I had a white denim jacket a few seasons ago that I passed on: it ended up being to stark for me.

Liesbeth: You're right! I think we have some of the same challenges, style-wise. You've got such a nice collection here, though, that looks 100% like you. I especially like the two darker tops.

Our summers are HOT! So I have a good selection of sleeveless tops, cropped pants, and sandals. I do wear shorts, of course, but mostly for around the house or birding. Some women my age (approaching elderly) don’t like to wear sleeveless tops because they think their arms don’t look good enough. To that I say, phooey. If you don’t like the look of my arms, don’t look at them.

Pictured is a Karen Scott top from Macy’s. It looks like the regular sizes are gone. :( These are great tops. I hate a neckline that is too low. And they are all cotton. I have them in lots of colors. Highly recommend. Hopefully they come back in stock.

I started wearing skorts last year, and they are nice when it’s hot, too. I have them from Macy’s, Patagonia and Lands End.

High summer was a challenge for me too, probably for similar reasons: my style is not at all boho or girly. Once I realized that I had to ignore all 'typical' summer styles and actively look for 'my' neutrals and colors, for tomboy styles like shirt dresses and denim tops, in short for summery versions of my year-round staples (and maybe 'up' the tomboy to offset breezier fabrics and skin showing), it got much better. I feel like you're there too, and can just keep going on that vibe. No exact product reco's from me right now though.
ETA: some of my summer staples from last year. I also have a sleeveless chambray shirt dress and a black cotton voile one but those are too old to be in my finds ;).

The Paige white denim jacket that I've got last summer is on of the favorites for me. It's a bit roomy but always worn with rolled sleeves ( or it could go over thin sweater ), stretchy with some lyocell in the mix ( light weight and soft ). I wanted to get the light blue one from Rack but now it's not allowed at my work - back to stricter dress code.
I do prefer toppers with some structure now but shopping for it is difficult ( mostly synthetics which I can't wear ). Tees and tank tops often from ON, Lucky Brand and BR ( they last for a while ).
You have great collection for summer - classics with soft feel overall !

I've been taking full stock of my summer items as I turn over my closet for the season (switching summer dresses for long toppers in one section of my closet and sweaters for tees in another).

As I've said here many times before, hot summer is my least favorite dressing season because I like structured layers. But it comes every year so I might as well embrace it! In fact, it was to get some guidance on summer dressing that I first posted on the forum two years ago.

I've cycled out almost everything I had purchased for summer before YLF because of fit and quality (not true of my fall/winter clothes, where I think I was in better shape when I started here), but there are still a few gaps, and I'm still learning about what I like, what suits me, and what I'll wear. As a reminder, my style moniker is "softly utilitarian" and I play for team neutral.

Successes include:
- Frame Colette-style jeans: This cropped bell style is just airy enough for all but the hottest days, and looks interesting with sandals and half-tucked simple tops
- ME + ME cotton tanks: I adore the shape of these and they have held up beautifully; I always like a center seams on tees for the interest and fit
- White Birkies: I'm on pair two of these, and they can't be beat in my book for style and comfort
- Faherty Willa top: this is a new spring addition and it has been getting a huge amount of wear; dressy enough for WFH calls, nicely covered for really sunny days, easy to wear with long pants or shorts: it's been a real winner for me
- Old Navy chambray pop-over dresses (fit is slightly shorter on me than on the model): I ended up getting two of these since, in the high summer, one was creating a laundry bottleneck - I wear them so often! Not too bare and not too covered and a real one-and-done

I still have a bit of a wish-list with which I'd like to supplement and strengthen the foundation that I have:
- More not-too-sweet easy dresses that offer some shoulder coverage
- Easy tees ala my Me + Em tanks, but with some shoulder coverage
- Denim jacket to replace one that is too small in the shoulder
- Cropped hiking pants for the trails

Reviewing all my clothes in Finds and in the closet make me realize that none of this is urgent, except perhaps the denim jacket, which will likely be the easiest thing to replace. (I have the one below as well as the two tees on order from ON.) I'll need to remember to take my time to wait for cut and quality -- not something I'm naturally inclined to do for summer clothes, but I'm always learning!

Thanks for reading. Would love to hear about your summer strategies, workhorses, and plans in the comments.
