Joy, Uniqlo is definitely a great place to get inexpensive items that are appropriate for Japan. A good tip about covering up for shrines.

3style, that is a good tip about not wearing revealing clothing.

I saw a documentary about Japanese fashion a few years back. At that time shorts were all the rage as a miniskirt alternative for spring and fall, worn with nylons and thick socks and chunky ankle boots. I think that they make a bigger distinction about showing skin (not good) versus shape revealing clothing. My understanding is that the norm is more closely fitted garments than what we average in the US and so bodycon clothing is less of a contrast.

Take shoes that are easy to get off and on and a washcloth in a ziplock for rack member of the family. ( no paper towels provided). If you forget, the department stores sell designer ones and everyone there carries one. Tokyo and Kyoto seem more dressed up than the states. I don't think I ever saw shorts, but was there before the heat hit. In Kyoto you will want to see some of the huge number of shrines. As in Europe, cover up for modesty. Do not wear shorts or bare anything. Take linen. Uniqlo has things in an airy/wicking fabric that DS swears by.
The children may love riding the trains and a boat trip

Thank you for all the help in editing down. I have taken heed of the #1 concern - footwear - as get that wrong and the whole holiday unravels.

So Docs and heels are out and Eccos and sneakers are in. I like covered footwear in the rain and I have swapped my new gold sandals for the older ones that I know I can walk for miles in.

I am a bit sad to be leaving the jumpsuit behind (it needs a heel) - but it will get a starring role on a work trip to KL in August when we have a "smart casual" dress code. It will be perfect for that and I don't have to worry about ironing.

I did travel to Japan this time last year and regularly wore my cropped denim jeans. For some reason, cropped denim works for me in the heat - I think it is because my ankle is not covered and I tend to run cold rather than hot.

I do realise that I need more tops - that will be covered as I am likely to add another 5 tops or t-shirts as they take up little room and I like having a fresh one to wear each day. I have added in a very breezy blue dress that has sleeves. I wear this when it is so hot that I am worried about the sun. Luckily, many people use their umbrellas for sun protection in Japan and I happily embrace that trend too.

Bijou, how exciting! You have a gorgeous travel capsule. Since you asked, I suggest the floral skirt, instead of the denim. It will be lighter. Denim can be hot, and as other posters have mentioned, it will take a while to dry if you get caught in the rain. It is also heavier in the suitcase, and who needs that? I would switch out a pair of the denim jeans for either a pair of long shorts or or cotton/linen crops. I think you may need a pair of super comfy walking shoes (try Merrill, Born, Geox, Jambu are some). If humidity is a concern, you will want shoes that have an insole that can be removed, so you can air those out at night. Are you familiar with Rothy’s? They are super comfortable and very cute shoes that can go the distance, but only if your feet do not require much support. I can wear mine all day and have very happy feet when I finally get to put them up.
Have a wonderful trip! I look forward to seeing future pictures!

I agree with others - maybe less denim. Just one denim jacket and one pair of jeans might be enough. Of course, you are leaving here in cold weather so denim is good for the flight, even if you don't end up wearing it there. I think of a denim skirt as different from jeans, and more summer appropriate, so I would take that.
I don't know about that long sleeve white lace top either. Although its beautiful, it would make me sticky in humidity! But I could be projecting my own thermostat issues.
And I vote pack the jumpsuit. Go team holiday glamour!
Have a great time!

This is a gorgeous capsule with lovely pieces in it.

For me you are short on walking shoes and possibly heavy on jackets and maybe jeans. I would add either flat walking sandals or sneakers - whichever works best for the feet. I think one denim jacket will be enough - whichever works best with the capsule.

If you have room I would take the jumpsuit and heels - super fun and lovely for a night out! But if space/packing light is an issue I think your dress would suffice or jeans and a gorgeous top and the wedge sandals.

When we went to Argentina and Chile and walked alot in the heat I found shorts, cotton dresses and two pairs of walking shoes that I could swap daily. I wore jeans on the plane and maybe one other day but mostly I found them too hot.

It sounds like a fun trip!!

Barbara Diane, during our 17day trip to Japan in the spring I only had one "hole in the ground" situation. That was a public toilet at a playground. But this and every other toilet I came across has been very clean and many of them were of the fancy modern kind. They are everywhere and free to use. And sorry if this is TMI - take some paper with you - just in case.

OK, my trip to Japan was a long time ago. Are all the toilets modern now? I know Japanese brands make super modern toilets but when I was there there were situations where jumpsuits would not work so well. And denim is an issue in the heat and humidity.

Oooh. What a BEAUTIFUL holiday. I love Japan.

Bijou, my first thought is to rethink your footwear. Docs are too hot to wear in a humid and hot Summer. And the other two pairs don’t look as though they go the comfy distance. You need walking shoes. Or am I missing something? I just woke up :)

Denim jackets are great because the a/c is arctic. And they’re robust to travel with. You won’t wear them outside.

May I suggest more dresses and fewer denim skirts? Easier to pack and more comfy.

I agree with Toban about denim. If it gets drenched, it will take two days to air dry, especially in a humid climate. I’d limit to one denim jacket and switch out some of the jeans for a quicker drying fabric. Do you have linen or light cotton? Or else something in a technical fabric but stylish, like pants from Athleta?

Sounds like a fun time! I like the idea of playsuits and jumpsuits. They make for easy wear without the downsides of skirts and dresses (chafing etc).

What a super stylish line-up! The flower prints and Hello Kitty seem very a propos...

My vote is for the white floral print skirt. I think it's muted enough to work as a neutral with the rest of your items.

I'd also not bring the heels as they look chunky and heavy and you will appreciate the extra room in your bag for your fab finds over there. I wouldn't bring the jumpsuit either--I agree it looks glam, but on a trip I prefer a variety of bottoms and tops for the maximum number of combinations. But then again I never wore a jumpsuit (as an adult ) so maybe I haven't yet realized its charms.

I'm also someone who overpacks so I totally sympathize with the challenge...

PS. My light-colored and especially white clothes are MAGNETS for soy sauce. It must be some sort of spell!

You have some gorgeous, fun pieces here. What an enviable style you have. Very Bijou! My only question is this- will the jumpsuits crinkle in your suitcase? Are you ok with doing ironing on your trip?
The other thing is, if it were me I would choose the plain denim pencil skirt because it will go with every top and accessory.

This is indeed a great capsule wardrobe for a longer city trip. But as someone who has been to Japan in summer twice I must say I second Tobans thoughts about choosing denim. When it's hot in Japan it usually is very humid too. So I always tried to wear something breezy made from natural fibers (think cotton voile or linen). And then packed a light scarf and/ or cardigan in my bag because of the sometimes arctic temperatures indoors. Plus - using a hand fan is totally acceptable. On the other hand - Japanese for the most part are quite modestly dressed. So no Deep cleavages, micro minis etc. This might be because of the urge to not get any tan whatsoever but being in my twenties then I found the stares of many Japanese men a bit unnerving sometimes when I wore a spaghetti strap top for instance.
Regarding the docs - if you are going to visit Japanese shrines, temples, palaces etc. in Kyoto or Nara you will usually have to remove your shoes at the entrance and benches are not always provided so this is also something to keep in mind. Oh, and this is the case in some restaurants of all price points as well.

But you are so lucky to be in Japan in the summer. Yes - the weather is horrendous at times but also this is the time for the famous Japanese fireworks which you can only see in the summer. These are soooo beautiful and an event for the whole family. There's usually a fair with lots of food and other activities like folk dancing (everyone's invited to take part) and then everybody is having a Picknick in the evening while waiting for the fireworks to start. These usually take at least half an hour if not more.

For children you could also check out the Kyoto Railway museum or the Osaka aquarium. Both were fantastic and had loads of fun activities for children when we visited this spring.

Oh well. This is getting really long. Sorry. But if you have any questions regarding Japan - feel free to ask :-).

Bijou, you have the loveliest wardrobe! The styles suit you so well - for me, this would be a fantasy wardrobe, so I love to see what you’ll do with it!!!

Take a look at the Vivienne Files blog for packing guidance - Janice is a a master with a critical eye to getting the most from a travel capsule. Granted, many of the styles she features are more conservative than your choices, but the underlying grids that she puts together for styling (4 x 4 capsule or the “whatever’s clean 13”) are fantastic.

That said, if your docs are essential ( I’ve never owned any, but they seem heavy...again, fantasy wardrobe for me!) I would cue a color scheme off of them. This means the orange items are not going to be as versatile as other choices. You’ve also got 2 glam outfits (the jumpsuit and the gorgeous floaty blue confection) and I wonder if you’ll need both.

I traveled to Japan in my teens - I remember it fondly and I hope you have a fantastic trip!!

Lovely capsule. I am not a fan of denim in hot and humid conditions, even more so when I might also get wet. As a result, I would tend to pick lighter weight materials for pants and lean heavily on skirts and dresses (with jockey slipshorts underneath). But I notice you are Australian and so familiar with heat. Perhaps your denim is lightweight?

Love your colors and prints. Your flowered denim jacket is divine.

I am getting excited because in a month's time we are travelling to Japan. I need to pull together a summer travel capsule for 11 days staying in Kyoto. It is hot and humid weather with afternoon torrential rains expected most days.

Activities: Walking, walking and more walking. Revised: Eccos and sneakers will be working hard, bike riding, shopping and eating out at casual dining and maybe one or two better restaurants - but they need to be child friendly, so alas nothing too exotic.

What I plan to take - now edited down for the suggestions!

3 shoes: Eccos, gold sandals, gold leather sneakers - so leaving the heels home.
2 Toppers: 1 Denim jacket - blue denim and rain jacket - Gold zip-up coat that folds down to nothing.
2 Jeans - pink and dark blue crops.
2 Skirts cotton floral and denim with poppies
2 Playsuits (shorts alternative) - navy and orange print. I see me wearing these often, because they are light weight and incredibly comfortable. I lived in them in the Australian summer.
2 Dresses - off the shoulder dress, blue cotton dress (it is very light and breezy - even with the sleeves).
Jumpsuit and heels staying home.
Tops - blouses, t-shirts and knits - will take a few more the ones I take will depend on the skirt. I am likely to buy some Uniqlo t-shirts too, so want to leave packing space for some purchases.
Accessories - turquoise bag, 1 scarf (likely to buy another handbag in Japan. I am thinking bright pink).

I will be taking the usual stuff (PJs, underwear etc) and a very good umbrella, sunglasses and cap.
