Just to add to all the great advice so far... when it is hot (I live in NC) I also like to tie a scarf on my handbag... that way it is not hot on my neck and still adds the color and pattern pop to my outfit.

Deedee,

Scarves have become a bit of an obsession of mine since I just discovered how to wear them last year. At first I was worried that there was no way I'd be able to don scarves in the Georgia heat, but I've found the secret is to choose lightweight fabrications and tie them loosely and/or away from the neck. In the pics below, I show how I often wear them over sleeveless or loose-fitting items like the sleeveless maxi and yellow cowl neck.

Jackets are a little harder. They are wonderful when I'm indoors in an overly air conditioned setting, but I usually take them off outdoors and in the car. Cuffing the sleeves helps as does layering them over tanks or sleeveless tops.

Deedee: i live in very hot humid climate but I also LOVE scarves and its sort of my trademark. I do wear silk scarves a lot but if its really hot, lot of times I will wear it as a belt instead of tying it around your neck. As others said, you can also try sheer lightweight fabrics. As for jackets, I always carry a jacket or cardigan to wear to work where its usually cold(due to AC) and just take it off when i go outside. And lightweight fabrics are good for the same reason as well

Deedee;
Some of the looks are probably for (over) air-conditioned offices. I've noticed my jackets vary widely in warmth/coolness. Collars make them warmer as does lining, thickness of fabric, and how fitted they are. Scarves tend to heat me up if they are anywhere near my neck. I've been looking for vests as a third piece, but they are not the easiest to find.

I agree with Rae. IN summer it is time for pretty necklaces to add interest, or a cuff. Scarves come back into my wardrobe in fall.

I know what you mean about layering in the heat. I just can't do it - I'll throw on a jacket in the morning on a summer day, but it's off before noon. I try to instead add interest with my belts and bags when it's that hot.

Deedee, I grew up in Arlington, so I know what you mean about your hot and muggy summers! A lightweight summer scarf might work for you with a plain tank and shorts. It would add a little bit of flair and a bit of coverage without making you look too bundled up. If you Google 'scarf tying' you will find some ideas for looser knots that won't make you hot.

ETA: I forgot! Check out Angie's spring MOTG formulas. Even if you're not a mom, they show you how to wear denim jackets and such.

I also have trouble wearing more layers in summer weather; in the midwest it can be pretty hot and sticky June-August. Even jewelry makes me crazy-hot sometimes. Maybe that's when I feel more need to be matchy in my outfit, since it may only consist of 3 items: skirt, top and shoes. If two things match, I feel better. Whereas in winter when you can use many layers, scarves, and jackets, there is more room for adding colors, prints, pattern mixing.

So there you go - I barely answered your question! But I sympathize with the heat issues.

I'm in Texas so I have the same struggles. It's summer here most of the year. The women here were talking all about puffer jackets the other day and I thought I was going to pass out.

It's difficult for me to find suitable layering pieces but I have found a few.

If you look at http://abie.lookfab.com you can see a few things I've done. Cropped short sleeve cardigan, short sleeve shrug, cotton short sleeve jacket.

I'm just starting to wear some scarves. I have a few that are a really light mesh and I wear them away from my neck a little so they don't feel warm. Light cotton scarves or linen is pretty cool too.

I find that sandals really cool down an outfit. If I'm wearing something a little warmer on top I try to wear open toe shoes. I know that sounds silly, but I really feel it helps.

I think choosing a summer-friendly fabric is a good place to start --- cotton scarves, linen jackets, lightweight denim, maybe a little lace... And then, maybe it's easier to start with a scarf or a vest than a full-on blazer. I'm still new to the summer topper/scarf idea myself; trying for the first time this summer... except I already did use long scarves with my ethnic Indian outfits, and this seemed the easiest carryover, though I'm still struggling with 'how to drape'.

(One trick I use at home on a hot day: pop the scarf into the freezer for a bit before laying it on your neck!)

Hi deedee,

I'm a huge fan of scarves and believe you can wear them in any season. For summers, you could add a bright, lightweight scarf (cotton) around your neck. You don't even have to wrap it, and can just casually throw it on the top.
