I just remembered tees with some gathering at the neckline that drape nicely skimming the midriff. I had some from Anne Klein, but there are many versions. Also, please try some of the Sweet Pea styles that have ruching at the sides. The fabric feels cool on, even if they have sleeves. Size up on these.

Thank you so much! Tons of ideas. I love Anthro and recently tried on a ton of stuff and didn't find any keepers -- either seemed too clingy or too boxy. Found a pretty decent shirt from Max Studio last night. Yublocka - love your blog & outfits!!

As an apple myself I know your difficulty. Pre-ylf I used to live (no exagerration) in plain tshirts sometimes layered over a cami because I didn't want to draw attention to my wide wasit, torso etc. Yes it was boring, but it was easier than finding tops that flatter. Now I look back at pics and see how unflattering this was on me. I still don't have an amazingly vast top collection, but I have managed to pick up several. At the moment I really like voluminous tops over skinnier bottoms. They hide a multitude of sins!!

Thanks! I will definitely try express, and love the idea of looking for more structured tops too. Those do always seem to work better.

I'm still not sure if I'm really an apple, but my stomach is my biggest issue, and I prefer to cover my upper arms most of the time, so here's my $0.02 :

I prefer tees that have some sort of embellishment on the front, to distract from the fact that I'm just wearing jeans and a tee. I love the v-neck tees from Express- I have about 5 of them, in various colors/prints and regardless of whether I layer or not, I never feel like I'm just bumming it. The hug my upper body just enough to make my chest look good, and then skim over my stomach. So, not knowing your size or shape, I'd suggest that you start looking there and see if you like what you find.

Good luck!

I'm thinking tops might be better than t shirts, sleeveless cotton shirts could be good in the heat x

What about a woven cotton shirt with elbow length sleeves? Or a knit shirt with a wrap top and empire seaming? Or band bottom tops like Maya suggested. I was thinking the same thing as Maya- t-shirts didn't work well on my apple body either.

Hmm, I have to say when I was an apple tshirts were the last thing on earth I wanted to wear. The ones that were fitted were clingy, and the ones that were looser were dumpy. I would have much preferred something with structure and tailoring. Not necessarily something fitted and constricting in hot weather, just something that has more shape, like a banded top.

This one would look ok, but I have to admit I find it really underwhelming. I don't think it would work with skirts either. The cut and length doesn't seem right for that.

I like that shirt a lot, and as someone with apple tendencies, I think it would work well. It is difficult to find summer clothes that are comfortable and cool and still provide enough structure to be flattering.

Having been an apple, I understand your problem, although layering does help break up the apple lines. The tee you linked to should work well because of the flare shape that shouldn't pull across the midriff. Eileen Fisher also makes this shape in tees and shells.
Another idea is to wear a longer tank or cami under a cap or short sleeved top worn open like a jacket. (I used sleeveless to be cooler). You can even find some tank/cami layers of shapewear in black or a color so it doesn't look like shapewear (and wear a bra under it).

I am looking everywhere for cute summer t-shirts/tops that don't need to be layered. I love layering normally, but on super-hot days would prefer to have something comfy & cute I can wear with skirts, shorts & jeans.

I am definitely an apple! I look best in stuff that is more tailored/fitted around my bustline and but isn't tight around the tummy. I tend to look boxy in stuff that's big allover.

I would prefer non-fitted sleeves too, not sleeveless. Anyone found a good t-shirt/top source?

Would this work for an apple you think?
