I was skeptical of navy too, when I first started adding it to my wardrobe. Now I love it!

I was shocked to discover that the Eileen Fisher silk crepe pants are perfect for the heat. They are light and breezy. I wear them for both work and casual.

They were a fashion risk for me for so many different reasons. I am so glad I bought them. I even came to adore the navy color (which I thought was a deal breaker).

My area is having an unexpectedly wet spring, so my surprise workhorse has been a pair of black rain boots. I wear it with tube skirts, skinnies, and it has been most fun to wear with shorts.

This shirtdress from LOFT breaks a couple of my usual rules - it's made of polyester and it has no waist definition. But the fabric feels good to me, like a heavy silk and I like how it looks belted. It hasn't gotten hot here yet, and so far I've worn it layered over a white button front shirt and on it's own with the sleeves rolled.

My surprise is that we haven't had much summer weather! (New England...you gotta love it!) but I bought three pairs of cotton sateen pants last September at talbots on deep discount, ($20 each?) and I've worn each pair multiple times! Stone, navy and black. Best bargain in a long time! Great basics, and my husband even said he liked the way they fit me.

These print shorts! All three have been very versatile and fun to wear. I realize I was wearing a lot of solid black and gray over the fall/winter, and all the fun, colorful prints have been a great addition to my wardrobe. Somehow they feel more "dressed up" than solid shorts, and I enjoy them. I like wearing them with solid tees or stripes and graphic print tees.

These shoes have been a great find--can't call them summery but they have really helped out for pants that are hemmed to boot height, as are not black, not boots, go with navy and black, hence look a little "lighter" in the absence of a summer bootie or shootie.
My Topshop culottes, while not workhorse per se, I plan to wear at intervals with different tops & shoes. The Johnston & Murphy denim-y colored striped cotton blazer goes with a lot of things and is easy to toss on--dresses up jeans, wear it a lot on errands, for the A/C, but it also goes with black pants.

My surprise so far is that I am managing not to wear my sandals. I have been trying to move away from sandals (open shoes) on the doctor's orders but hate having hot feet. We have not yet reached the hot part of the summer, but I am encouraged.

So, have you had ant summer surprise workhorses? I bought a pair of black culottes that have become workhorses. I've worn them 3 times in 3 weeks, which is big as I tend to prefer skirts in summer.

How about you! Any surprises?
