Hi Janet --

What a collection, and they look lovely on you!

I'm a boring shoe person myself but have the higher-heeled espadrille style of the Eileen Fisher in 2 colors, one a DIY metallic (note: style poorly made, I've had to reglue the straps into the sole, hopefully they've fixed the issue several seasons on). I agree they're ridiculously great for walking as the straps are butter-soft.

For your style I'd think treating them like a sneaker alternative might keep you on the proverbial right path. ;)

Which reminds me -- you certainly don't need a reason to keep any, but if it's just the color that is off I'd for sure slap some Tarrago shoe cream in metallic or pearly on and see if that improves things. If interested choose the darkest silvers for better coverage/transformation. [must be the shoe cream, not other types...shoeshinekit.com is a vendor I rec]. You can easily layer colors and/or create a RATE look.

I like the following: 1,2,7,10,15, 22, 33, 42. I'm not a fan of thong sandals because they are usually too flat to walk around in and those thong parts hurt my feet :). It seems like these are keepers for you too.

I have an errand to run at the mall today (and my car needs a bath, and there's a good detailer who works there right outside of Nordstrom!), so maybe I'll look at mules while I'm there. :-)

Janet, that was a HECTIC photo taking an uploading process. It yielded excellent conversation though - so thank you.

May I suggest a holding zone for anything that you are unsure about. Feel your way with your new sandal purchases. You have classics that need replacing - easy. Get new slides. And have fun trying on mules.

Oh, and for sure, I'm ready to let some go because I DO have plenty of options in my closet. I'd be happy having a little less choice but better selections to choose from. If I can find two versatile, amazing replacements for 6-8 pairs, I'll be happy. Preferably flat or very low heels good for lots of casual walking. And neutral -- maybe a pair in black, and a pair in silver/metallic.

With that in mind, perhaps I need to ease up on my determination to find budget options. Two really fab pairs of sandals at $300 each might serve me better than six pairs of $100 sandals. I learned from those LD Turtles that pricey sandals can be worthwhile! Those are not exactly trendy, but they're so distinctive (and well made) that they have worked for me for years.

Huge thanks, everyone! This is helpful. Heck, just the process of putting on each pair and snapping a photo was helpful. I'm ready to pass along a few pairs now.

Interestingly, Angie, I'm not ready to give away the EF sandals yet. I got those last year and find them really useful for very casual days with lots of walking -- they're sturdy and really casual but substantial (and not slip-ons), and a really versatile color, and sometimes that's just what I need. I'm not sure what an updated version of that would look like, but I'll be keeping an eye out.

In fact, that's my trouble with this whole sandal thing -- I'm not totally sure what updated versions of some old favorites should be! I'm kinda over those old Cole Haan thong-style sandals (but big props to CH for really well-made sandals that have lasted through 5 years!). But I don't see anything out there that makes me go "ooh! that's it!" Maybe it's not a good season for sandals because everything seems to be about mules.

Speaking of which, Angie, no, no mules for me yet. I find them cute when I see them in photos but I'm unsure about them on me, with my summer wardrobe, and with my flattery priorities? (I'm a little unsure about how they look on less-than-fab legs) I've tried on a couple of pairs but quickly determined they did not work for me -- either not comfortable, bad fit, or they looked odd. I guess I'm just not used to them -- I have memories of walking out of them, and sweaty feet. I suppose I need to try some on.

Janet you have an amazing shoe collection! I would love to have a store nearby offering all your options. I would want many. You have received excellent advice from others. My only recurring thought is that if any of your shoes are troublesome (escaping toes, short straps, wrong color, a little beat up) is to let them go. Do they really still make you happy? You have plenty of others to choose from. You won’t go barefoot.

Well stated Angie! Although I definitely purchase trendy shoes every year, the bulk of my shoe collection is made up of fairly classic shoes like ballet flats, loafers, and pumps that I wear for years, don’t seem to go out of style, and last a long time. I’m not sure they are statements. I definitely purchase trendy shoes every season, often at a lower price, that I don’t expect to wear for more than one or two years. They may or may not be statements.

I'm glad that made sense, Lisa p. People like you, Tanya, Denise, UmmLila, Anna, Staysfit and Janet are very trendy with your shoes. You revaluate strongly every season and want the trendiest. Find it harder to wear last season's shoes again. The trendy shoes are part of your signature look. They are NOT for my style. Like I said in my comment before yours - "I tend to stick to more classic styles and wear them into the ground. I am trendier in my clothing than in my footwear choices. My shoes seldom date. They just wear out!"

This is how I updated my shoes for Spring & Summer. Apart from the mules - not very trendy. But dead right for my feet and style. Horses for courses - always :)

Angie - I knew you’d say that about the EF’s , as Janet’s style is most definitely NOT EF influenced . And I appreciate how you have differentiated between dated-for-one is not dated-for-another . I tend to be uberconscious of that for my own shoe buying and rarely let a pair hang around for longer than 2 -3 seasons tops . But we all have different ideas as to what trends we want to adopt or not .

YES. I'm back. I realize it was cryptic, SarahD8.

A few things upfront, which I hope make more sense:

Dated is in the eye of the beholder

Dated for one person is not for another

My assessments are subjective - although consistent and tailored to the wearer.

Take the EF shoes in #9/10. My trendy shoe fashionista clients are passing that type of look on. They have worn the look for years and it's "tired" for them. Same goes for cut-out booties with lots of hardware, and slip-on sneakers. Onto something fresh, new and more on trend. Other clients on the other hand, are buying a similar look for the first time this year because the silhouettes are NOT OUT OF STYLE and suit the vibe they aspire to. They simply aren't the on trend styles, and those clients are fine with that. Take me for example. I tend to stick to more classic styles and wear them into the ground. I am trendier in my clothing than in my footwear choices. My shoes seldom date. They just wear out!

Janet is a trendy shoe gal. To my eye, specific looks are dated for her. The classics though - like gladiators and thong sandals (and dressy loafers for me) - stay classics. Trendy or not, they always look right - even on a trendy shoe gal.

Janet, WHERE ARE YOUR CLOSED TOE MULES?

This is a fascinating discussion (and a fabulous summer shoe wardrobe!).

I am a bit hung up on the meaning of the phrase "dated for your style" that Angie is using. I was interpreting it as meaning "not quite in line with your current style/representing a previous stop on your style journey" but I think others are interpreting it as "very slightly dated, in some objective way, but would be acceptable on someone who was not as concerned with being trendy."

I also loved Staysfit's comment - spot on.

I definitely used to use other things more as statements and shoes were more of a quiet background piece (they had to work, but not be the most noticeable thing)...that has changed a bit - maybe due to all the eye candy I see on YLF!!

This is such an interesting thread. I don't always look at big k/r posts but this one has had some valuable commentary. Angie is making some astute points about your round-toe slip-on sneaker collection (I'm hiding in shame here because I have lots of them too) . They are not as interesting as your overall style is. I'm trying to apply this lesson to my own collection ,but sometimes we are limited by what works on our feet . You don't have any pain/fit issues, do you ? So I wonder what is the current/cool version of the slip-on sneaker - because I need this info for my own wardrobe too!

Also - reading Staysfit's comments and thinking how this applies to my own collection again. I absolutely want my shoes to be statements - although not kooky crazy statement. And it's interesting to hear how someone else may not want that at all. I've never considered a shoe that wasn't a stand-alone piece, if that makes sense (other than a few pair of these round-toed sneakers which I now want to get rid of - lol).

I want to know what you end up with for new flat sandals . We don't have quite the same taste in shoes, but I'm certainly looking to up my game this year , budget allowing.

And lastly - Angie is recommending you get rid of your Eileen Fishers .....what size are they? I LOVE those shoes.

Shoes! I love them all! Your shoes look to be in great shape. My shoes look much worse than these before I send them on to their next phase of life, whatever that may be—— donation bin, trash bin, etc. I don’t think any of these look dated. You have great taste in shoes. When I think of your summer outfits, I am always struck by your beautiful shoe selection. Your shoes are statement pieces in your outfit, much as other people might use a scarf, or a necklace. While I also have a large shoe collection, numbering over 100 pairs, most of mine are not statement shoes. I have a lot of classic shoes, and modern classic shoes. I also have practical shoes for my climate in abundance....what I believe Suz has written about many times. Shoes are the most expensive purchase in my wardrobe, and therefore, I expect the majority of my shoes to last a long time. Happiness from my shoes comes from a good fit on my tricky runnners feet. I like my shoes to feel good on my foot for walking, look neat, and to complement and coordinate with what I’m wearing, but I am not one to draw attention to my feet. I do not need or want the majority of my shoes to be statement pieces.

I wonder if evaluating these shoes in terms of the joy you feel when wearing them would help? Which still work as statements for you? I think you should be much more picky about shoe styling than most of us who don’t use shoes as statements in our wardrobe. If a shoe is not in keeping with your current style goals, I would pass it on, and find something better. (I would give myself the same advice about my collection of dresses, or my sweater collection——lots of statement pieces, so I update them very frequently, and weed out anything that feels less than fab.)

My favorites are 21-24 and 41/42. Such a fabulous collection!!

I agree with Angie - she has a terrific eye.

I really need to add closed toe shoes for summer - the look better on me and are more appropriate for the office setting in which I work. Really like pointed or almond shaped shoes - my feet are not suited to peep toes (my toes often don’t show enough in a peep toe - and that just looks weird.)

Yay Janet!

You have a lot of great shoes! Definitely get rid of worn out ones. I especially love 1-2 and 21-22.

I would get another pair of light slides.
I would get rid of the tan ghilly sandals with the tear on the front.
I think your feet look good with some wider straps so I would consider editing the size of your “skinny strap sandal capsule”.

I think it would be fun to add a pair of flatforms.
