You are so right. I was thinking climate
change? Microclimates? Since I stopped the office thing, I’m really not as cold and see the sun actually!

I have sort of been working on this myself. I have to get it together and show y’all.

unfrumped, I like your plan, and you always look great. I'm sure you will get to exactly where you want to for a refreshed retired Summer style. It does take a while to figure out.

Don't deprive yourself this Summer though - still 8 weeks of it left. Might be worth getting a few experimental items to kick start the "research" for next year.

Figure out your priorities in terms:

fit

figure flattery essentials

colour spectrum

comfort level

bodily coverage

fuss-factor

laundry maintenance

versatility

happy-factor

sustainability

fabric composition

And then begin building the capsules as you tick things off the list. Sounds like a fun project to me :)

FashIntern, hi- I absolutely do think some of my work wardrobe can be re- purposed, and am not rushing to purge them, for that reason. I have pants for example in silhouettes tgat I tend to keep or return to. But one problem is, most of them are dry clean and / or seem less like what I would wear all day at home. I have mostly targeted some of these as a type of business casual - smart casual overlap which would be what I might wear to go to some conferences or to church ( with different accessories and shoes) or out. Less likely to wear for multiple errands in the heat. But yes, I do think really evaluating which of these I still love, and incorporating them, is a good direction because I have already invested in some quality brands, had tailoring, havd some supporting acts.

100% agree with Runclara, i find summer shoes, tops and shorts definitely don’t last as long as fall/winter...so i end up with a lot more stuff from Target and the Gap...i also tend to buy shorts and sandals at the end of the season, on sale, and hold them over to the next year. I know that this doesn’t work for everyone, but its been a good formula for me

I think it's a splendid idea to research the fabric first! I was also very hesitant with linen as I am not a big fan of creases. I am ok to have 100% linen in a scarf but would really frustrate me to have a constantly creased. I have been researching for fabrics like seersucker, chambray, khadi... it depends very much on the garment. I know that some people really like viscose even in the hot weather but it's not ideal for me.

Linen blends well with cotton and it doesn't crease much. I recently bought this jumpsuit in this material mix and was pleasantly surprised how light and breathable it was!

Good luck with the search and please share any other fabric that would work well during the hot summer!

I think you’re smart to take the time to sit with this and think it through.

Could you rework any of your professional pieces, or are they in such good shape that they would be useful to Dress For Success or the like? I get that you need different outfits, but wonder if you couldn’t wear the pants with a breezy linen top, or put one of the sweaters over new, lighter pants when you go to the mall or a restaurant.

I hear you on colors. For me, in Florida, once I started trying to develop a sense of seasons in my wardrobe, color was a key factor.

Runcarla- I think your summer casual outfits are great and I have been taking notes!
Joy- thanks. I also recognize my yearnings fit different colors as the seasons change. I am continually surprised by how much— and this is important so that I don’t overdo certain colors or items and then want different ones. Also I expect this to “ get worse “ -!- in a good way, in that being retired, I will be more connected to the outdoors and changing seasons and sunlight qualities and patterns, which triggers some of my color cravings.

Minaminu— thanks for suggestions. I’ve not had such with pure linen especially in lighter colors because I can’t make peace with the crease, except for extreme casual wear. But as you suggest, some blends work pretty well.
So part of my search will be for the right cottons, blends, and yes, technical fabrics, that give me the right combination of temperature, structure or drape, laundering properties— may be a tall order!

I live in the UK and summer tends to alternate between heatwaves of 28-32 degrees and cold weather of 15-20 degrees. I grew up in a country where summer is around 30-45 degrees, in my case even the UK heatwaves are ok with some light and breathable materials like cotton, chambray and viscose.

I am planning to spend more time during the summer in hot Mediterranean countries and have decided to slowly build up a mini capsule of items made in linen. Have you considered linen (or cotton linen for less crease) for casual wear during the hot weather?

I really get what you are saying. Our last home was in N area where hot summer started in March and went until the beginning of November. I split my summer wardrobe into “hot spring”. “ high summer, and “ hot fall”. This saved my sanity, especially toward the end. It felt refreshing to bring out different clothing. These were mostly divided by color and motif. Spring is light and bright colors. Florals are the motif. I should say that I have a cold spring capsule of sting colored sweaters. My neutrals are pale or navy. I tend to wear navy with pastels like blush, mint, citron or yellow.
I have added some floral prints , floral scent, and floral jewelry. Toppers are important as.most days start and end quite cool
High summer Is more bright than pastel. I make whites my light neutral and navy is still the dark one. The motif is the sea, shells, sea creatures , and a bit of nautical. If I wear navy it is worn with red and white or brights.
Hot fall is to given in to my need for fall colors like orange, mustard and olive. Brown shades and olive are my main neutrals and leaves are my favorite motif. I give orange and mustard a work out..
I have some black pieces like sundresses that do not feel right in spring but I wear these pieces in high summer and fall happily. They make me feel like I am in the shade. They are not right for a tropical vacation. The sun is wrong for black. And it looks out of place... like houses painted pink or yellow may look great at the beach but not in Midwest suburbs.

Totally get the difficulty of curating for high summer. I’m still trying to figure out a formula - now 3 summers in! Longer length shorts and summer dresses are my solution, ATM. One thing I’ve discovered - summer clothes take a beating and might not last many seasons.

unfrumped on "Summer season ascending"

Pandemic notwithstanding, I have been realizing that in retirement, summer- or very warm/ hot weather, whenever, is going to be , not exactly dominant season, but a more important season, for my wardrobe.
When working, I did do a shift from my warmest clothes- sweaters especially, to lighter weights and colors, but because of cold hospital temps ( to me) , there was more overlap with some of my wardrobe essentials. In addition, I tried to find summer things in more “ professional “ fabrics, colors, styles. And, because of working days, weekends, holidays, i had a smaller % if time I could be in casual summer clothes.

Now, I am seeing that I may have wow, 10-12 weeks of warm weather at home ( including out & about, of course, but home is not kept as frigid as hospital, stores, restaurants ( whenever we return to those!).
Granted, part of many of these hot days is spent in outdoor grimy hobbies such gardening, for which I have a specific very function- oriented capsule.

But i think it will take some effort and retail research and style-pondering to
develop my “ pretty good casual “ summer capsule, using some of the principles I tried to use for workwear, but for much different items. Not necessarily different styles, in the sense that I know certain fits, lengths, proportions are part of my enduring preferences-but, fabrics- need to be washable, not very precious- but not settling for bad fit, poor quality, fast fashion, wrong colors , things that don’t play well. And how might my style actually evolve, over time?

Though we have a lot of summer left here, I feel I should sit on my hands a bit for most of the rest of it, almost like doing research for NEXT year. That I will want a high level of comfort in how things “ feel” , but with as much , I admit, figure- flattering fit and style as possible—-what ARE those items? Who makes them? I won’t need a lot, but would like to find the best for me at the right price point. Which could vary a lot if I run smaller capsules and wear things more often.
