A lovely collection of sandals, but I would definitely get the ones that are too difficult to wear and / or uncomfortable to another home! I love the selection of the ones that are work horses - particularly the Paul Green ones.

I think you may feel better from moving on from those that are uncomfy and at the very least you will have more room in wardrobe!

That is an amazing sunset!

I ended up getting those Lucky wedges because of you! I get about the ankle support, but are they really dated? Awww. I don't wear them much at all, but probably because they're wedges, which are not a shoe I feel comfortable in, though they feel good on my feet at home. They are pretty versatile, though.

I only bought two pair of sandals this spring/summer and both of them were workhorses, and so comfortable.

You could take the SW to a cobbler and see if they can stretch them.
Elastic does loosen with heat.
You could try heating the elastic with a hairdryer while stretching it.
I shouldn't think that would damage the sandal.

A great varied collection.
Personally the back and white ones and the SW would be too flat. They are nice sandals but if they are vaguely uncomfortable for me I won't reach for them, especially in the summer as I appear to be less tolerant. Reading what you said about the Lucky wedges helped me make a decision about a similar pair I have, they are going in my Sal Val bag today. I have osteoporosis and do NOT want to turn my ankle plus I haven't worn them in 2 years.
Thanks for all the pics I enjoyed looking.

Thanks for the sunset.
#4-7 are retro, which I don't associate with your style.
#8-9 look good, but I know I would never wear them if they're uncomfortable, esp with another pair of white (and silver) sandals to wear instead.
#10-15 are all the same style (horizontal steap across toes, and ankle strap) - maybe you're off that style or don't like it on your legs ?

You have a great collection, with great variety. Anything that you haven't worn this summer, I would let go. Whilst none of these look worn or dated, it is just that you have better options within your favourites. I would wear the sandals that make me feel fab and work effortlessly in my wardrobe - items that requires too much effort usually stays unworn in future seasons too. The sunset is magnificent.

You have an amazing sandal collection, Janet, and your favorites are my favorites too. I totally agree with Angie and would get rid of anything remotely uncomfortable or the sandals that you have a newer and better version of. I am quite a fan of those white gladiators so hope the stretching work out.

Great feedback, everyone! Thank you. This has been helpful. I am glad to see that my instincts seem to be echoed by the opinions here. Sometimes I just like to be sure I'm not giving up too quickly on some things, or hanging onto false hopes. ;-)

Three pairs of sandals are now in the sell/donate pile. I'm going to test out the gladiators more to see if they should go. Hmm, maybe I'll try stretching the elastic by wearing them over some thick socks around the house! That's what I do with shoes, but I'm not sure elastic will work -- it'll probably just spring right back to its slightly tight state. Again, another drawback of the way my legs are made -- my ankles are not thick, but I guess I have long calf muscles that extend way down the leg, creating a wider lower-calf area, in relation to my low-volume, narrowish feet (which don't seem to be as narrow as they used to be, but that's a whole other story). Ah, tree trunk legs. ;-)

What a fav mix of sandals. And I don't think you are lazy-I have worn the same pair of sandals almost every day this summer, except when I needed more stability or something fancier. And for the days I have worn shoes instead because it was cooler out or because I was talking a walk.

Does your foot fit correctly in #5? It looks like it isn't all the way down.

As for the pair that is slightly tight, if you like it and would wear it if it fit better, does it feel better after wearing it for 30 minutes or does it still bother you? Sometimes shoes get better after the first few minutes. And if it is reasonable to think that you will lose enough weight for it to make a difference, maybe into a holding zone? If you like them enough.

What a lovely collection of sandals!!

I would happily steal pretty much all of them...

Of the orphans I would keep the espadrilles as they are a little different and while they are not a "workhorse" - they are super fun. And I love the blue - how would they work with olive pants (if you have them)....Or you blue linen dress - or is that too matchy? I could also see them with denim boyfriend or crop jeans.

I agree with the three you are planning to remove, for the reasons stated. I very much like the Lucky ankle wraps but a tight ankle is annoying. I do think the wedges are a little dated for your style and I agree with your assessment of the black flats - I let a pair go last summer for similar reasons. I would also pass on the white gladiators - just my opinion - but I don't love them as much - a mix of the style, heel and colour. Maybe consign them as they look in very good shape.

What Angie said. I would let go of anything unstable, uncomfortable, or older (for which you have a fab replacement.) I am like this also - I far prefer my newer items unless they don't match the comfort of the old, so if I get something that plays a similar role in my closet to an older item, the older item tends to go unworn as a result.

These are all beautiful sandals, by the way, and anyone would feel lucky to get them!

Thanks for weighing in, Angie. I've been really happy with my shoes this summer -- there was never a time when I felt like I lacked the right shoe for an outfit. In fact, often I had the luxury of two choices that both worked, which is great because it helps me rotate wears and my shoes last longer. The collection doesn't feel overwhelming large, but I know I could stand to let some go. (Making room for one or two new pairs of booties too!)

Re: the SW gladiators. Is there any way of stretching out those elastic straps just a bit? It wouldn't take much to make them more comfortable. They are so close to working. I confess I put them on eBay once but didn't sell and decided to give them another try.

WOW, the sunset.

WOW, your sandal collection. Like Denise, everything looks current and fabulous to me.

I know the SW sandals were pricey. #8 and #9. They are SO gorgeous, but look too tight at the top of the zipper. I vote consign, unless they stretch.

Pass on anything vaguely uncomfortable, and that includes your flat sandals that don't get much wear, as well as unstable heels.

Like me, you love wearing your new stuff, so they take the place of old favourites. The Cayennes are a good example of that.

Yes, I could very likely consign or eBay the pricier ones (Vince, even though I actually didn't pay much for them - they were on big sale at the Rack a couple of years ago).

I really need to try wearing those SW gladiators in the next couple of weeks -- maybe I'm just being oversensitive to conventional flattery. And I need to see if they feel too tight with wear -- if so, I need to let them go, which will be sad, but necessary. Unless there is a way to stretch elastic slightly.

Nothing looks un-current to me. So from that standpoint, you're good. I owned those same sandals in 10/11 and 12/13. Loved them, but wore them to the ground. I actually looked hard to replace 12/13 but it was too late.

I would remove the shoes that are least comfortable for now. You can re-evalute the others next year, if you have the room to store them now. I agree those Lucky's, while flattering, felt snug with the elastic, but I still wore them to the ground. The white ones that aren't that comfy, would be my other target. Someone else will feel they struck gold, if they were an expensive sandal. Can you consign the pricey ones?

ETA -- If you're looking to get rid of other ones, I'd say anything with an unstable heel. One of the bridesmaids at a recent wedding I attended had a boot on because she wrecked her ankle wearing those cork wedge heels. I hear of this all the time. Think of your health. I've pretty much stopped buying anything over 1.5" or 2" for this reason, even though I NEED the height!

Thanks for the feedback, Elisabeth! Really helpful that you took the time to consider these. I am 100% with you on the easy summer slip-on sandal thing. I get so much more wear out of those. Ties and buckles definitely are an impediment to wear unless they are really cool statement shoes like the Freebirds.

All of the sandals are cute. Literally all of them. But I can see your points on a few of them -- especially what you said about #6/7, about the strap being too much effort to do up. For me, it would be! I have learned that summer sandals have to be nearly effortless to put on. I don't know why I'm so much more fussy about this in the summer (maybe it's because I'm in and out of the house so much), but I need sandals I can slide on, or else that do up with one quick zip. Even buckles seem like too much work. Those lace-up string flats that everybody was wearing recently? Cute, but not for me. I know I'd never bother putting them on!

As for #10/11, I agree that they are a bit dressy. I think it's the shiny gold. I probably wouldn't wear them much if they were mine, because they would be too dressy for my slightly RATE vibe. You're a bit RATE too, right? You have hard rock leanings, at least, and shiny gold sandals with conservative low wedge heels aren't really rock star shoes. You'd wear them if you wanted to look put-together for dinner on a tropical cruise.

As for #8/9, they are probably not as stumpifying as you think, because the white straps blend better with your fair skin than, say, black would.

Finally, I vote get rid of any sandal with a thin, hard sole, no matter how cute. They are not only uncomfortable, they are bad for your feet. ;-)

I woke up to cooler temps this morning and a hint of fall in the air (although it's going back up to 90 later this week, blech). With all the closet editing talk lately, the promise of fall made me want to take stock of what has worked for me this summer and what hasn't. I thought I'd tackle the little project of assessing my sandals, since those are my staple summer footwear (I'll look at my sneakers separately).

I have 23 pairs of sandals (not including my Tevas and my pool flip-flops), and it was quickly apparent that there are six pairs I have not worn at all this summer.

Pic 1: shows my higher heel and wedge sandals -- front row are workhorses and back row are secondary, although I couldn't help but notice that I have not worn those gold Mat Bernson sandals in the back left much this year -- maybe 1-2 times? The Paul Green Cayannes (front right) really took over their spot in many cases.

Pic 2: flat sandals (oh, and one pair of higher heels crept in there, the olive Antelopes on the top left -- not frequently worn but I enjoy them when I do wear them). Again, workhorses in front (some are ultracasual slip-ons but that's what I need a lot in summer).

Pic 3: The orphans. Lucky platform wedges in soft rose gold fabric (pics 4-5), Sperry lace-up wedge espadrilles (pics 6-7), Stuart Weitzman white gladiators (pics 8-9), Lucky (small wedge) rose gold ankle straps (pics 10-11), Splendid (small wedge) blue wrap ankle straps (pics 12-13), and Vince black and white flat ankle straps (pics 14-15).

I am trying to identify the reasons these shoes have gone unworn.

4-5 I'm not feeling the platform wedge style so much lately -- I feel a little unstable without any ankle support. But I like how they look on my feet and legs. They just don't feel current to me.

6-7 ok, they're comfortable, flattering and I like them, I guess I have just been a little too lazy to style them. The wrap ties are work for my lazy summer self, and they loosen up around my foot as the day wears on. But they have a certain something that I may want to keep in my wardrobe as an option.

8-9 I feel guilty about these. They were not cheap. The elastic straps are just a teeny bit tight on my ankles -- I don't think they look it, though. My weight is up this year, which makes me self-conscious of my legs looking thick, and the high straps and horizontal line, combined with a flat sole, make me worry about flattery. But I like them and maybe just need to get over it.

10-11 They are a little snug around the ankle, and always seem either too dressy to dress down or too casual to dress up. I kept an eye out for new rose gold sandals this year but no luck.

12-13 I like these but just haven't reached for them. No issues with comfort, just maybe a little difficulty in working with the blue? It's either too matchy or not matchy enough with my outfits? I think again I have just been too lazy to try to style them.

14-15 They are very flat and very thin, hard soles, and I don't love the way the black ankle strap cuts across my ankle with short summer hems (again, contributing to the "thick legs" syndrome).

I'm thinking of getting rid of 4-5 (Lucky platform wedge), 10-11 (Lucky ankle wrap), and 14-15 (Vince b&w).

What do you think?

And if you stuck with me through all of that, here's a beautiful sunset from last night as a reward.
