Thanks, Zaeobi -- I'm sure your hair will be utterly spectacular as its colour starts to change MANY years from now. :-)

The only real "issue" with the cargo pant is the polyester fabric. But the light colour and style are very practical for part of my summer lifestyle -- and I like them -- so I'll probably keep. If the fabric itself is just too hot, well, lesson learned.

It is spring here (supposedly), but things have been sol cold that I haven't had the occasion to wear any of my lighter clothes yet. We went to a friend's house for dinner last night but all I wanted to wear was jeans.

You're so right about the challenge of learning to shop again after weight loss. I feel a need to buy more because I don't have much. The adage that you shouldn't buy anything if you can't make three outfits with it applies to people who already have some kind of wardrobe. I have to buy the pieces to make those three outfits -- which is part of the reason for the back and forth. I find pants I like, but no tops to work with them. I find tops I like but then need to find pants, or toppers to complete them. I find something I like and see if I can find enough to build a capsule. There's a temptation to buy things also just because the do 'go' with a new capsule. I look at things now and think, ok, that will work with x! Thrilling.

Proud of myself today though. I tried on a couple of tops and quite liked both, but didn't buy either one because I couldn't think of any meaningful place for either within the capsules I am building. I did let myself bring home a vibrant orange floral shell with a neckline I really like. I know I will be able to put it with several of the items in my growing summer wardrobe, and the colour made me feel very 'alive'. Baby steps.

If it's any consolation, I agree with your assessment of the new #15/#16 addition - they look comfy but, even with the current cuffed style, I can see the width of the leg possibly making it difficult to keep the cuffs up (unless you tack them in place?) For summer, one of my key 'fit' tests is whether I can 'see' myself forgetting that I have the item of clothing on - feeling the need to adjust usually indicates an item that's going to be too fussy when the weather warms up.

The good thing is that it's spring where you are though (right?), so you'll soon have plenty of opportunities to shop for summer clothes! You have a good selection here already (I vote to keep the cargo pockets, but I'm biased lol is it possible the drawstring waist is what's making you hesitant though?) - going through that big of a weight loss can make us a little uneasy in our closets/ replicate our old habits of keep 'just good enough' things, but you need to trust that you *will* find what you need eventually!

PS - I'm loving the natural gradient of your hair in all of these photos - the whiter face-framing layers but darker ends looks like a professional job! Here's hoping mine will grow out like yours when the time comes - hair goals

I'm slowly narrowing this list down. The green Jones pants (Find 4) are still in the running because pairing them with an oversized popover shirt and white sneakers totally changed the vibe.

The beige pair I added at the end of the original post went back. I loved the colour and overall vibe, but wasn't a fan of the quality or the construction at the waist. This was enough to put me off of spending even a few additional $ for hemming. Something else is out there.

I had a chance to try the YFB pants (Find 9) in a larger size (in flame orange, if you please!) and even the larger size felt a bit snug across the hips, making me less confident that dropping a few pounds will actually make much difference to the fit and feel of the navy pair. This may just be an incompatible cut. I still very much like the navy Taharis (Find 6).

The grey Tahari pants (Find 3) are actually the same size as the navy -- just a case of different colour fitting a bit differently. I still really like this colour and am reluctant to part with them.

I returned the light blue pair from the original post, but replaced them with another pair in a similar colour but narrower cut and more cropped length. (Find 1)

Also found a dark brown pair similar to the grey CK, but lighter weight. They're a tad shorter than I would like, but I love the colour so much I think I can work with them. (Find 5, CK are Find 7)

Added the sandy brown and white patterned crops. Wish like heck they had pockets, but like the colour and pattern enough to overlook the omission. (Find 8)

No update on the beige utility pants. (Find 2)

I really like 8/9 and 12-14(quite sporty). I have a similar shape so know how frustrating it can be to dress. I have slim legs and a small bum so look for details that make me look bigger there.

Thanks, Suz! The 'good' news is that I have time to waffle a bit before linen season hits. I'll hang onto that first pair and play with a few combos to see how I feel. The other linen/linen blend pants are a bit more RATE, so maybe a more polished pair (if you can call linen polished) would be useful.

I like 4 and 5 for different reasons and have debated the merits of keeping both.

I'm looking forward to finally lightening up my summer wardrobe!

I'm late and you've already received fab advice but I just want to pop in to say how fantastic you look in all of these! I love them! Now to go back and read what you've decided on.

Re 15/16 -- hemming pants is totally part of life for me and I actually really like these and would consider hemming.

Love the colour of 1 on you but if you are not confident of the shape, then don't cut tags until you feel sure.

If I had to vote, I'd say my faves are: 4, 5 (though I know they'd dupe each other -- so take the one with the best fit) and 10, 11, and 12.

Thanks, Robin -- Maybe a good shopper but a bad prioritizer! It's helpful to get some outside perspective.

Thank you, Zaeobi -- The cargo pockets shouldn't be an issue. The pants clearly aren't jeans and that's the main definer for us. We're reasonably casual in our interpretation of 'business casual', and summer is even more casual. For the office I would wear those with my cream oxfords and some kind of topper.

And thanks for the awfully kind comment about yellow. Wearing that sweater does make me happy!!

I *really* like #12-14, so long as cargo pockets can swing as 'office appropriate' for you? Otherwise the CK pants come in 2nd, with YFB as 3rd (personal preference).

PS - Yellow is absolutely your colour! Made me smile, seeing you in that jumper

Thanks everyone!
Jules - Great suggestions. I have a pair of cream oxfords that I envision working well as a closed toe office shoe for summer -- although sandals are not uncommon. I figure my toppers combined with a bit of bold jewelry will help carry most of these into acceptable territory for our office this summer. We're reasonably casual to begin with and who knows where we will land once we finally return to working on site!

slim cat - Thank you!

Great pants and the kind of thing I hope to live in this summer as my shorts alternative. Not what you asked but some thoughts for dressing these up for the office - I think any of the pants can work; I would tuck any drawstrings, choose the button down shirt vs the (very cute) peasant top, and consider some nice closed toe loafers or similar instead of sandals. With the right top and shoes the pants will not be in focus.

Thanks, suntiger! The positive feedback on that first pair is inspiring me to give them another, closer look. I had almost written them off. Shows the value of getting insight through other eyes!

I do like to have wide leg options and summer is the most practical season for me to wear them.

I like 1, 10, 12 most of these- but all could be workable. It's nice to have a variety of shapes of pants!
And what a jerk :p

Aww, thank you, Jenni! She was a catty little so and so. A remark like that from someone I had never been particularly close to is one thing, but for a friend to make such an unthinking comment to you - OUCH!

I know there is a range of taste here on the forum and not everyone is a fan of the wide leg. I totally get it! don't know what's up with that pulling on the first pair. It wasn't something I noticed at all until I looked at the photos. I'm going to play around with them a bit more. I don't really have skirts or dresses, so pants will be my mainstay through summer. I have a few pairs of slimmer fitting cropped pants, too, and some jeans, but adding a few lighter weight pieces will fill a mid summer heatwave gap.

PPS. On your behalf I hate that woman! One of my friends ( who actually was a friend) once said “I knew you were pregnant because you get really wide across the backside”. Well gee thanks mate! (Not!)

PS. This last summer I got by with 4 pair pants plus 2 pair shorts, one skirt, and some dresses.

Well I immediately liked 1/2 and the last “experiment pair” the best.
I can only see what you see about 1/2 in pic 2, not pic 1? They sort of pull crookedly in pic 2, what’s up with that? Lovely colour on you.
I REALLY love 12-14 on you. Can definitely skew dressy if you wish. Versatile. Disclaimer: I am always less of a fan of wide legged pants and own none.
Thus, I do not like 3/4/5. If I have to choose, I prefer 6/7.
8/9 are too big I feel. 10/11 Calvin Klein are good.

Thanks so much to all who've commented so far. Such a variety of answers is proof of how differently each of us perceives things. In some ways, this makes it a bit harder to decide because I think almost everything has at least one vote. On the other hand, it makes it a bit easier, too.

Thanks, Kelly!

KKards -- Despite checking the box for lighter colour AND light fabric, I think I tend to agree the light blue ones aren't as strong as some of the others. I'm delighted to get some love for the larger size light grey pair - I imagine them being very comfortable on a hot muggy day.

Peri -- thank you -- another vote for #1 is throwing me off a bit... but appreciated at the same time. I like the colour and have been back and forth on my impression of the fit. Seeing it through others' eyes helps.

Cat2 - thank you. Yes, navy and khaki are classics and I can work with both quite easily!

Rachy -- thanks for that observation. You're right that they do share that common silhouette. It is funny that it doesn't bother me the same way with the tan pair. I don't feel the puffiness as keenly because they fall much closer to the body. Still food for thought.

Jaime -- 'lecture' absolutely excused. I don't mean to whinge on about an imperfect body, but to set the context. Just as some have to find things to fit tiny waists or pear-shaped bottoms, I have to work with a rather blocky top half. And I don't mean just a little blocky. I mean, 20 years later recognized from behind blocky. The story: at some point in my forties I was sitting in a training session and I hear a voice behind me say "Carol, is that you?" I turn around to see a woman I worked with in my early 20's. "I knew it was you", she gushed, "you've got the widest back I've ever seen." (Um, no we were not friends when we worked together and did not rekindle our acquaintance!) In any case, broad back, ample bust, thick middle and relatively thin legs just means some things are really hard to fit or just impossible to carry off. It is what it is, I've spent a lifetime getting reasonably good at finding the ways to flatter, fake, and camouflage it. And sometimes to just ignore it. Slouch is one of the tools in my toolkit.

I agree that the longer pants might be better a hair shorter. I don't usually wear full length pants in summer. I thought these might be ok because they are so light and loose. Otherwise, I could see a trip to the tailor in their future. I really like the length in 3-5 too.

LaPed - thank you - and yes, that straight leg does seem to be a HEWI, -- not wide, not skinny, not tapered. I have to agree that in the heat, loose clothing is a winner. I'm also sitting on a very loose linen dress that I can see being appreciated on super hot summer days.

Lana -- thanks! I tried the charcoal pants on a whim and I'm glad I did.

I'm going to do a bit more playing with the green pants in #1 tomorrow. As I mentioned earlier, I have talked myself into and out of them a couple of times now. I have a fun cheap green and silver necklace I could wear with these, so I'm kind of rooting for them to work for that reason alone! I like both navy pairs so it might come down to how well they fit by the time the heat hits. I think the lighter blue pair will probably go back. And I'll keep my eyes open -- it's a bit of a gamble. You hold on to a few things you think might work while you keep an eye out for something better.

Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts!

My favorites are 10 though 14 because they fit so nicely, however a wide leg pair would be nice for a change and be nice and cool. The charcoal pair goes really nicely with your hair.

The colour palette in 1/2 and 8/9 is sooo good on you! 8/9 does not look sloppily oversized in the photos, but it may come down to how you feel. I love having some super-loose clothes for very hot weather.

The charcoal pants in 10/11 look like a really great cut. Slim and tapered but with some room all the way down the leg is such a unicorn (for me at least) that I would certainly keeps those.

And definitely keep the tan synthetic pants -- having a polished pair of pants in a technical-ish fabric is so useful. I really like them with the black sleeveless top.
