My MVP this summer have been lightweight denim jackets and jeans and sneakers. I have a lot of summer tops from when I lived in a place that had 8 months of summer, so I've been trying to wear them on warm days but there haven't been many so far.

My MVP has to be these shorts from REI. I’ve already worn them at least a dozen times. I have them in olive, and just ordered them in light grey. They have a hidden drawstring for a great fit.

For non gear, my MVP would be my EF linen dress. It’s from last year and I love it.

I am in awe about the midi/maxi and Carmen necklines trend, so stocked up on everything alike(for ex. pleated midis and some summer maxi dresses, and tops with Carmen neck) but my GOAT of MVP for summer is always THE unbeatable white knee length denim/twill skirt (this year was a twill one with button downs on front)... and 2019 was all about a tan block heeled mule (it's second season now) and a silver tote!

After few years of not wearing skirts much, this summer I wore skirts at least 2 times per week. Main reason was probably that they were easier to fit and accommodate my perpetual weight fluctuations.

Surprisingly, mine have all been casual wear. Must say something about where my work wardrobe is that nothing jumps to mind from that side of the closet.

Anthro White speckled Chinos. Perfect fit and the color in them gives a little more interest than normal white pants.

Daniel Rainn eyelet top: perfect popover top for summer events

Sundance eyelet t-shirt: total workhorse

Vince Camuto tie-front blouse: super easy. just duplicated in pink

I love hearing about everyone mvps. And surprised by the Lululemons, must be me, but I’ve yet to crack the sizing code there, every i try is either too thought or too big...
Anyway. My mvps are duplicated footwear, cognac handbag and some items from my Pilates capsule...

My MVPs and even GOATs (most have been MVPs for several summers) have been silk pieces and EF knit dresses and shoes. Silk is just right for me, breezy but can be warm enough when needed.

I have this asymmetrical, gauzy silk Helmut Lang tank top in desert tans and browns, and I love that stupid top. I don't normally do horizontal stripes but when I saw this top I made an exception because it's such a pretty top. The weight gain has the top in my "holding zone" storage tub, and I'm hoping that the gym works so that I can wear this top again!
In general, any tank top that is a longer length winds up being a heavy hitter in my wardrobe, but my lifestyle chews through summer clothes so most of them don't last very long. How that Helmut Lang top has survived for the last 8 years or so without disintegrating is beyond me LOL

Beautiful selections, karen13. I find the high crew neck and boxy shape of men's t-shirts isn't very flattering to my broad shouldered, small chested somewhat H shape. How do you style your t's?

So many great items here - I am going to bookmark and consider many of these for next summer.

Runcarla - I am waving at my t-shirt "cousin" - one of my favorites this summer has been my Uniqlo Hokusai that I bought in Tokyo last summer (Find 1) - best travel souvenir and goes with all my new wardrobe items. I bought another in San Francisco last week, but haven't worn it yet. They re both mens - why are men's tees on you forbidden list?

My Tumi convertible bag/pack has been in heavy rotation, along with my comfy Bzees and my new wide mustard crops (which go beautifully with both Hohusai tees..

My MVPs have been my navy LOFT sheath dress (second year and still my favorite, an awesome travel dress that is stretchy but structured and never wrinkles) and my Boden Helena olive chino dress (it has pockets!). Both hot almost weekly wear, but were easily changed up with different sandals, toppers and accessories. Also, I am always grabbing last year’s LOFT olive utility peplum topper.

Burton board shorts - these were an MVP last year too. Material is very durable and fairly quick-dry. Perfect for all non-work days. I need another pair!

Levi’s wedgie jeans in black. Perfect wardrobe update.

Uniqlo ribbed tank tops (I think they were $15/ea). These look good with everything. Can be worn as undershirts.

Zara gladiator sandals. These are the type that are just laces that are crossed around the foot and ankle. Love thee! They go with everything. I have not taken them off!

Reef black flip flops. I’ve concluded these are the best plain black flip flops available due to their plainness, lack of cheap-look texture, and cushioned footbed. I spent $45 on them (which is cringey given I don’t like to spend more than $20 on flip flops), but they’re worth it.

Lululemon on the fly pants - woven. I got mine in navy. Nice drape.

This is a great idea. Here are mine:

Footwear
Birks - Bronze Gizeh - I bought these at Nordstrom in Jacksonville Florida about 5 years ago but hardly wore them. This summer they seemed to magically work for my feet. No idea why. They go with everything in my wardrobe.

Bottoms
Lululemon - Black Joggers - Dress them up, dress them down. Go anywhere pants.
Lucky Jeans - Real Straights - Baggy enough to wear on a hot day.
Sanctuary Peace Troppers - Camo and Olive

Tops
RE/Done - Vintage White - I bought 2 of these and I might get another.
J. Crew - Faded Denim Shirt

Make Up
Finally, I found a mascara that doesn't irritate my eyes and isn't hard to take off. Cover Girl Lash Blast. I also started wearing Brown/Black instead of Black for daytime. The mascara looks just as good as Lancome Hypnose for a lot less.

Lisbeth - 'don't get too caught up in versatile neutrals as an interesting colour or print can take a lot of work out of outfit building.'

I am copying this over into my style journal! This is the solution for a hot season when less clothing is the rule. It is a challenge to create interesting outfits with just a dress or a spare top and bottom, and I realize how much I depend on that third item - usually a topper - to create visual interest, but this isn't practical when its hot out!

Note to self: when shopping for summer 2020 consider pattern and/or colour for visual interest.

Good idea, celebrating your mvp's!
Mine are very different from last year. At work I switched from a sweltering hot to an icy AC office and at home from baby cradling to toddler chasing.
Most worn office items: beige ankle pants and closed toe flats, white denim jacket as a summery topper. Scarves were switched around often, as were tops. The crepe blouse deserves some praise too - it's truly wash&wear and always looks elegant.
On the weekends I'm living in my new linen ankle pants (as suitable for hot as for cooler weather) and drapey modal tees (I purchased four but wore mainly the seafoam one as the color makes it more interesting).
Lessons learnt: practicality has taken on a new dimension. I need wash&wear items that allow for freedom of movement (weekend) and keep me warm yet looking summery (work). Don't get too caught up in versatile neutrals as an interesting color or print can take a lot of work out of outfit building.

So smart of you to recognize your MVPs, and not just focus on discarding the worn pieces!

My MVPs have definitely been my new sun hat (thanks, Carla for starting the earlier thread about sun hats!), my green sneakers, and Birks. The vans replaced my worn navy chucks; these are the Old Skool "PRO" model with a stronger footbed and arch support, and seem to be much better quality than my old converse. The Birks turned out to be a fine substitute for my beloved OluKai Ohanas, once I figured out that drilling extra holes in the suede for a tighter fit made them work for my foot.

I've come back a few times to read this post and the replies....and I have to admit to some sadness , because I had NO mvp's this summer. Now I can't even think what the heck I wore, but none of it was spectacular, and there were no go-to's that stood out - other than a pair of short denim Jag pull-on shorts . This is telling - and I hope to rectify that by next summer.

Without a doubt, the Gap black wide-leg crops I bought in the Spring. I think they were an Angie Pick. They went along both times I traveled, and I’m sure I’ve worn them at least twice a week all spring and summer, both casually and for work. I just clicked my Find and see they’re still available; I might duplicate them in another color.

Fantastic pieces that look great on you Carla; I can see what they are your MVPs!

I'll have to think on this, but off the top, my sleeveless linen tops from BR have been great this summer. And my Birkies, of course!

This summer I seem to be following rainy season from place to place (or it follows me), which has given me a chance to work on how to dress for hot, wet weather. Challenging! But I notice that my platform-sole sandals are really useful- less splashing on the feet because I’m lifted above puddles.

Good question!
Bottoms - Narrow and relatively simple jeans and Nike sports long shorts.
Shoes - Vince toe ring sandals in cognac and black both found in like new condition second hand.

Everything else is switched pretty frequently lately!

Ah, Suz - 'Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it' - George Santayna

He had very cruel opinions about FASHION that I will not repeat, but I think we can learn from the past, so it is worth contemplating what worked and what didn't as we continue on our sartorial adventures!

I appreciate the insight folks provide (I wouldn't have picked up on 'pattern' as a common denominator in my MVP's if Angie hadn't pointed it out) as well as recommendations (one day I want to own a VC tube skirt and a liberty print skirt and top like you and Christina!)

Murph11 - the EF denim dress has a lot in common with my red linen dress. Hmmmm

Carla, I love that so many of your MVPs this year are thrifted. You've got a good spot for thrifting, there. Love your bags and hats, too!

I really like these retrospective posts -- they help me clarify what's worked for me and why. Really smart.

So...my MVPs for summer 2019 are:

Footwear -- EF silver sandals, and Fitflop slides. Both are walkable and cushioning, which says it all to anyone who has suffered from plantar fasciitis. I don't have it now, but I don't want it again. ;)

Tops: Loft gingham (5 years old now???) and J. Crew sleeveless (on its 2nd year).

Pants: J. Crew cropped chambray (basically pajamas to wear outside) and the Zara linen hi-waisted...which alas, I wore so much, I ruined them. Quality wasn't great. Zipper completely broke and couldn't be mended. They are gone now. But I wore them enough to justify their very low cost. And LOVED them.

Dresses: Comrags x 2 (only one pictured). In Finds is the dress I bought two years ago (still going strong) and I am also wearing a Comrags dress that is at least a decade old, donated from a friend. I'll have to take a photo of it. It's been HUGELY valuable. I wear it at least once a week.

Skirts: J. Crew liberty print and a tube skirt. Actually not the grey one pictured but the navy, that I pulled out of the donate bag. It's worn, but still super useful. What can I say?

Bag: the Julian backpack I worried so much about splurging on (even on sale) last October, and haven't stopped wearing since! ;)
