Runcarla, this is very sweet. I am lucky to be one of the first members to speak about wigs - but I'm sure I'm not the only wearer out there. For a long time they were tabou. We think we'd can recognize a wig wearer, because we all have in our heads visions of an unsuspecting lady at the supermarket sporting a bad, cheap, costumy wig. It's almost as if there should be a different word, because there is a world between a 20 bucks head cover and the 500$ accessory that can actually replace one's hair and look real.
I hope others will join and also experiment and then post about it! It's really a new world.

You're so right -- hairstyle plays such an important and often unacknowledged role in overall style! Amazing how the waves of 8 say boho while the pageboy of 25 says going-to-a-meeting.

LOVE the repurposed Kookai pants -- that silhouette looks great on you!

You wear these wigs incredibly well and what an amazing match they are for your own hair. I enjoy seeing your experimentation here.

My favourites are 8, 10, 14, 19, 25.

Lyn, I encourage you to find a wig shop and set an apppointment, just to have those fitted onto your head and experience the difference. Frankly, I wish I had done this earlier. So to answer your questions:

1. All these wigs are synthetic. That is because human hair wigs are triple the price. Also, human hair wigs need daily styling. Synthetic wigs remain the same. One wig here (Haute) is what they call Heat Defiant, which means you can style it using a flat iron or a curler - set on the lowest possible temperature. I never curled it, but one must use the flat iron on the ends in order not to let the ends become dry and bristly. The Heat Defiant fiber feels different than the other wigs. It's softer, IMO closer to real hair. But it's also more maintenance.

Think of your wig as a pair of nylons on the legs. Wigs are not eternal and eventually will wear out. So when you buy one, you have to ask about lifespan and maintenance in order to prolong their life. With the heat defiant one, I didn't do it at first and almost lost the wig after4-5 wears (including one where the wig got tangled). Thankfully the lady who had sold it to me patiently saved it with the flat iron, showing me how to do it every time I wear it. You can also save your wigs with a steamer.

2. With synthetic wigs, you have to get products (special shampoo and spray silicone "conditioner"). I wash them at home in a bathroom sink and dry it on a little dry stand that comes with the wig. When you go to a wig shop and chose a wig, the seller will instruct you on care. It's quite easy but there are some important things such as not wooshing the wig in the water else it tangles, and spray it profusely afterwards, and not use human hair shampoo. When it dries, magically it comes back to its original shape. I wash it every 4-5 wears. So no salon, no extra $.

3. There are various ways to contain natural hair, and you have to play around because it seems people tend to prefer one or the other (a little bit like some people like to clean with rubber gloves and others can't stand them). Glue-like gel, net cap, pins... you can put a band - they sell an adjustable one with gripping material which is my got-to solution. Some like to just clip natural hair and wear the wig directly. I've done it a couple of times but admit it doesn't feel as secure. My head runs small (such a weird thing to say lol) and the band gives it extra volume too, but anything you will put under your wig will make it feel hotter. Although, in terms of heat, I am pleasantly suprised so far. I had memories of Halloween costumes in which you sweat after a few minutes. This is not the case. This feels like you have a beret, or a rasta hat on. Your brain forgets it after a while. Like for nylons.

I like to use a second securing method, with 2-3 pins strategically placed throughout the wig, and, if going on a big outing, a tiny piece of double sided tape (also given to you with the wig) applied on the skin next to the scalp. There are many eye-opening tutorials on youtube.

A well fitted wig stays in place, like nylons stay in place. Another concern could be if it's bad for your natural hair to have something over it. Actually, for me, it's the reverse that is happening, and the lady at the shop had told me the same thing with her. Hair is really healthy: i think it's because it's not moved, not exposed to the elements, not styled desperately for volume.

There is so much to say I realize... Thank you for asking these questions Lyn, as I am writing this I think you must not be the only one to wonder.

Wow, you look so fab and NATURAL in all of thes rather different wigs and outfits!!!! Plonk!:-) Now I do feel encouraged that if ageing not so gracefully (which is so likely to happen as I do have very fine and thinning hair now all over) will simply buy a great wig and make do somehow. Though, I think having some of your own hair pulled out under a wig is the great trick which it is not possible to do when having thin hair- but certainly, that way a wig is working rather as an extension and will always look more natural. Your Wigs are natural hair? Do you wash and comb them by yourself or at the salon? And how do you feel your own hair behaving underneath?Just wondered.

Krishnidoux, I’m so glad that you took my comment in the spirit that I meant it. You look totally natural in terms of what you’re doing with your makeup, so huge applause there. And likewise your wigs look very natural. I certainly wasn’t trying to tell you to run out and buy another wig tomorrow, and I think that you know that. It’s more like I wanted you to be sure to consider options which might be more different from your previous preference.... I think it’s hugely brave to ask for this type of feedback on something people might find personal.

Becky, for sure a wig on your head will be hoter than no wig. But I am surprised, quite frankly, to realize it's not that bad. Actually, after a while, you forget the wig is there. I like the Julianne look (weavy) because I can push it back beyond my hairline and pull out some of my own hair in the front, which is much much more comfortable in the heat. I think a big part that makes it feel hot is is if you feel the front lace on your forehead - it can become itchy in heat. I do notice, though, that since I am not losing all that much heat from my head, I don't run as cold, therefore sleeveless items are now more accessible.

3style, thank you for your advice. I will certainly try to apply it. I think the paleness you detect in the weavy blond wig is because I am wearing zero makeup on those pics, when I am wearing a little bit on most others. I agree eyebrows should be enhanced. And for my next wig - which will probably be in the fall or winter, because these babies are expensive! - I will play with darker tones.

Angie, Cardiff girl, Jill, Kathie, Thank you!

I like you in all of the straight haired looks. I think if you want to look outstanding with wavy hair, you need to go a little bit longer and darker and let your eyebrows grow out a bit bushier. See example photo.
I like the wavy hair with the hat, because it adds some drama and volume to the look.

This is a great collection of different silhouettes and looks, that seems to cover a wide variety of occasions. Well done! And, I love how you paired the wigs with the different looks.

Hello!
I wanted to give you an update on my wig wearing journey, as the summer settles in.

My wigs
Now I have three wigs ladies! They're all "front-lace", which means that they don't have the harsh sudden perfect hairline you see on costume wigs, but rather, hair coming out naturally from a lace front that blends into one's forehead. You can see my three wigs in the first four pics below.

1 - Jon Renau Julianne wig, worn slightly pushed back with front strands of my own hair pulled out.

2-3 - Jon Renau Alia wig, no hair of mine.

4 - Jon Renau Haute wig, pulled back to the limit (i think my own hairline is showing).

Dressing with wigs in the summer

It had never occured to me that the hair you sport coud totally change how you look and feel in your clothes, and so I am re-learning how to dress. I have to change my style slightly. For example, the Alia wig wants preppiness, whereas Julianne is boho.
Parallely, being in a weird place in my life (separation, turning 50, moving), I am in that state again where I feel a bit estranged from my usual style. Something that could be anxiety inducing, but somehow, I don't feel it that way. It's like I'm numbed from my own self in a way. So I take advantage of that moment to explore. And what comes out as a priority is: simple. My outfits must be as effortless as possible. All outfits below are beyond comfortable. Maybe some are too casual though.

5 - "Julianne" with old long yoga skirt and flats.
6 - With Citizens skinnies, Adidas workout halter top tank, Guess utilitary shirt.
7 - Same tank with Gap boyfriend's and Rockport open-tow mules.
8 - Same with straw hat over wig and Cosco-bought Santana sleeveless denim jacket.
9 - With Gap sweater.
10-11-12: variations with Kookai pants the seamstress repurposed as wide cropped. Most toppers are gym wear, but somehow it works for me here.
13 - Nike top and Yoga Jeans high waist skinnies.
14 - I'm wearing a snake shaped belt as a necklace in this one.
15 - I'm wearing a belt as a belt in this one (lol).
16 - Trying some colors. No wigs per say in this one, but a fake ponytail worn as bun.
17 - For when it's ultra hot outside: tennis skirt and gym tank.
18 - Fake bun again, summer dress and tennis.
19 - Alia wig with straw hat.
20 - Alia wig, Talbots clam diggers, flip-flops. Trying to keep it as casual as possible.
21 - No wig here, but false ponytail.
22 - Alia wig, the only way I can wear skinnies with her.
23 - Alia Wig and straw hat.
24 - Alia wig and what fits her best I think.
25 - Haute wig with a dressier outfit.

Thanks for watching and for your comments, good or bad!
