Oh, and I just realised I'd mixed up cobalt and ultramarine. *blushes* Ultramarine was the really expensive & popular one that all came from a single mine in the Afghan mountains.

I'm reading a general one that includes chapters on lots of colours. It's by Victoria Finlay & is called Color: a Natural History of the Palette. This is actually my second time through it. She has a neat one on jewels too (I think it's just called Jewels).

Um, I'm in awe of the six braid style. I have to coax my hair to be that width in just two.

Just looking at those blues makes me feel cooler! And they're amazing colors on you. I don't think the dress looked bad in the other wearing, but this version is definitely breezier and more stylish.

I wish I had a tenth of the patience and coordination that must be involved in putting your hair up like that.

Wow!! This blue is absolutely sensational on you. In fact, if you keep going like this, I may have to share my title of Queen Blue -- which I am more than happy to do when it is warranted. The kingdom is large and commodious!!

I love both outfits. Hang onto that dress. Everybody needs this type of dress in the heat. As Claire said, there is a huge difference between how you wore it last time and today. Today's look includes such carefully chosen shoes and earrings -- and you're not covering up the dress, but letting it shine for exactly what it is.

Also adore the second outfit. Those pants are fantastic for "try outs." And your hair is just plain amazing. Hope you don't suffer for all that beauty.

Thank you everyone! As Angie suggested, I will keep the dress, but I actually decided to make the dress sleeveless - those little cap sleeves annoy me and I find that sleeveless actually draws less attention to the upper arms than a horizontal line across all that acreage! I'll have to wear it again next week to show you the alteration.

E which book about cobalt are you reading? I recently finished one about mauve (this one), and then saw there were several on cobalt/blue/aquamarine and got a bit overwhelmed and decided to leave color be for a bit.

BethL, you know, I thought the same thing about attitude -- the dress looks pretty much the same in the old photo, at least sans cardi, but my face and posture show how gah I feel in it.

Firecracker, I meant quilting fabric, not quilted, oops! I might be able to take it in a bit at the shoulder seams - I think the fabric is too stiff for a drawstring, or the tiny little pleats/tucks I've done with other tops that have the same problem.

Donna, the cardi is not white, it's a natural linen color, so I think would not work with white pants. Or maybe it would ...

And for Alasse and those interested in the braids, I used this hair tutorial as a starting point:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....56QFRg_Iwg

I did a few things differently - the four braids are more or less
equal, instead of two very small ones in front like in the video, and also I french braided the two front braids about half way towards the back my head, then tied them in a knot. The bottom braids are not knotted (they are too thick), just pinned. I think she uses a total of 5 bobby pins in the video, I probably used about 5 per braid, so about somewhere ~20 altogether. I've also done this style with six braids, which works even better in my very thick hair, and gives a very satisfactory mass in back (attached).

Have fun braiding!

Oh, I love your E-inspired dress outfit! So pretty and cool-looking, with the gladiator sandals giving a little edge. Fab, fabber, fabbest. And hooray for the white pants outfit, too--super on you. That top is quilted? Or you used quilting fabric? It's really nice on you--great silhouette and color, and looks spectacular with white. I wonder if you can put a drawstring through the neck--maybe by sewing buttonholes at intervals and weaving a ribbon through them. Or just pop a cami on under the blouse--but that defeats the idea of a cool top for warm weather, doesn't it?!

Brava, MG! You look fantastic! What a difference between this wearing of your dress and the last, though I'm going to go so far as to say that some of it is confidence and attitude as much as anything else. You look calm, cool, and collected with the metallic sandals and no topper. Though I know your hair is heavy, it looks marvelous up. Kudos to you for trying out white pants; you're rocking them! Love how they look with your printed top.

You look so good in both of these MG! And look at those braids! Your hair is delicious. (Although now that I know it actually hurts to wear thick long hair in an updo I'm less annoyed with my average-to-thin hair. My niece has hair like yours, and now I understand why she didn't want it up, even in the heat.)

I love the dress, not frumpy at all. And those are so fabulous peacock earrings! I have a pair of earrings I think of as MG style; I'll have to wear them soon just for you. The white capris are really nice too, despite their provenance (lol), and set your cobalt blue off to perfection. I'm reading a book about colours right now, and cobalt was the most expensive paint & the most coveted blue: it's made from ground up lapis lazuli & all of the stones for all of the paint in Europe/Middle East came from one particular mine in Afghanistan. That top looks great on you; I'm so impressed you made it. Too bad about the neckline, but presumably the people at the library are reading, not watching you waiting for it to slip.

Oh, my what a difference YLF suggestions make! You look stunning here. I love that dress. You need to live in that for the rest of the summer, okay? And your hairdos are so pretty! The addition of jewelry and braided updos make you look like you're taking a real interest in your appearance, when the rest of the town is probably wearing cut-offs, flip flops and slapping their hair in a ponytail. The white pants are totally working, even if they are just an experimental pair. I adore the printed top too; I can't believe you haven't worn it yet. That's a crime. As for the library flashing, don't worry about it. It keeps those academic types on their toes.
You look cool, breezy and refreshed, not at all like you're grimly suffering through the hot and humid temps you're dealing with. Well done!

You look wonderful in cobalt blue. And yay for white bottoms. They look fab.

Your linen dress is the perfect item to wear in hot weather sans a/c. I would hang on to it.

You look so cool and breezy in both outfits! OMG you did a fab job with your hair! Wowee that last photo is so cool - it looks professional! Isn't YLF great for suggestions? The blue paired with the crisp white looks fantastic on you.

We're back to hot days in OK, and because we've had so much rain, it's also unusually humid. So we're talking actual temps in the mid to high 90s with perceived temps well over 100F. On my last post, I got lots of good suggestions, including wearing a breezy dress, and pairing my bottoms with printed tops.

Pics 1 & 2: This is a turquoise linen pintucked shirt dress that's been sitting in my closet, unworn, for 2 years. Since I'm still trying to purge my overstuffed wardrobe, I decided to wear it or ditch it. I had worn it once when I first got it and had felt really really frumpy (Pic 3) and so never wore it again. But when I wore it yesterday, I felt very cool (temp wise) and sort of free. And boy did people look. I was the best dressed person at the pharmacy/library/gas station! I think of the is as a very "E" dress (even though the skirt is straight rather than full), so I took E inspiration - I tried to think which of my earrings she might choose for me to wear, and settled on these enameled peacocks. I then did a version of her favorite fake-coronet, and french braided the front section then pulled the whole shebang into a braid. Oh, shoes are old bronze-y snakeskin printed gladiators, which sounds way more exotic than they look in person.

Pics 3 and 4: White pants! I've wanted white pants for years, but I'm ridiculously terrified of them. I bought these cheaply in June at the Evil Empire of Doom (WallyWorld) and have been experimenting with them. They are not my ideal shape (I would have preferred slightly more fitted and tapered to the ankle), but they are fine for experimenting. Today I took YLF advice and paired with a printed top - this is a floral calico (actually quilted material) T that I made maybe last summer, but don't think I've ever worn. I thought the wide neckline called for a pretty necklace, and the only white necklace I have is this moonstone piece I bought myself in the 90s. I never do matchy matchy earrings necklace, but what the heck, I liked the sort of sweet look for today and decided to put my hair up in braids for an old fashioned look. This is four braids crossed and pinned. You can see I didn't do the world's best job, but hey, I got the whole shebang up and pinned, so good enough for today. Shoes are my most comfy shoes ever (this is the third pair I've had, I wore the other two in the ground), my teal suede Keens. I really like the way this looks in the photos, but have discovered that the wide neckline tends to fall open when I'm sitting, and I think I've flashed half the library at this point (and it's not even 10AM). Ah well.

Thanks for looking/reading and suggestions for improvement very welcome.
