Thank you, Bijou!! I really, really love the orchid and linen outfit. It is so breezy and easy. I love your wisdom in having a mix of casual and dress-up glam. I really didn't have enough easy casual. Or even "easy" glam if you will. Thanks for confirming what I was wondering. I have some very easy casual sewing patterns and outfits in the queue. Will report back!

You look fabulous - much love for #2 & 3 which is so pretty for summer. Of course the earth tones of #4 & 5 are stunning on you as well. I like to have a few styles in my wardrobe as my lifestyle is casual and then the opportunity to dress up and go glam when I feel like it.

Aquamarine, how beautifully said <3 thank you <3 There have been a lot of things the last few years, plus upbringing. At any rate -- I am cautiously excited about this autumn <3 and I am taking yours and Angie's beautiful words with me as I dress in my new fall clothes.

Ket, you’ve been through a lot—health, house issues, etc. Agree with Angie you deserve to wear your pretty clothes, but it *is* hard to reconcile our upbringing with the here and now sometimes. I get that. I also get how the best laid plans, like buying clothes that we don’t end up wearing for whatever reason (weather issues, no occasions) can feel frustrating. But you always look beautiful, even if you feel a particular vibe/style isn’t your favorite. I hope you enjoyed the process anyways. That’s part of the fun of fashion.

Carol, oh that's so lovely to hear! My husband is Austrian-German. He still has extended family living in Germany. From their photos, I can tell they tend to dress more formally than we do. It's hard to explain because they might wear jeans and a t-shirt, and yet... it's never like American jeans and t-shirt outfits either. I have followed Madame Chic but never read her books. I actually love that they're cooking and vacuuming in their nicer clothes.

To be fair, I would probably do this if I wasn't being so precious with preserving my clothes. It's an old habit. I grew up quite poor and while we never starved (came close a couple times) and my father loved dressing to the nines when we did have more money, I always had this worry if I wore nicer clothes and ruined them that I wouldn't be able to buy them again.

Something I want to experiment more with this autumn and winter is getting dressed everyday. At the very least, getting out of pajamas and dressing in activewear or nicer loungewear. Have to see how it goes...

And finally, Ket, you have probably heard they dress more formally in Europe. I think it is actually true for a lot of the world. I love the book Lessons from Madame Chic, which you may know. It is a comfort read I can go to over and over. I like, from that book, that most French people dress first thing in the morning, and nice clothes at that. It makes it more encouraging to know that yes, there are people out there dressing up, just to cook dinner and vacuum.

Helena, thank you <3 Boho it shall be!! I'm actually really excited for my autumn boho wardrobe! So I'll share some WIWs soon as the daytime temps cool off. Or maybe sooner! I'm thinking it could be fun to workshop a few things.

I do really love the lilac top. I've been hunting for the right shade for some time when I stumbled across this one. That said, I do still love my browns and oranges and such! And my husband really loves the brown top. I only wore it a few times this summer, so might try to wear it a bit more before fall fully arrives.

Jenni, thank you for such comforting, kind reminders <3 I guess it is normal. It's hard because I'm ready to move on. My new practitioner told me that it is normal too. She said the season I was unwell was like a loop. She said even though I'm coming out of that old loop and entering a new loop, it takes time for the heart and body to trust the new loop and get used to it. I think one thing I've realized is I could really do with beautiful lounge clothing vs old hodgepodge sweats. I've found a couple of hopefully easy patterns to try sewing using jersey knit fabric. Photos below. So will see how that goes.

I love aspirational style words but I too don't always feel them or dress up to them :D

Well you look beautiful in these photos. The confidence thing… you were unwell for some time and it’s not surprising you lost confidence at that time. Having the odd day when you don’t feel like putting any effort into dressing and fall back on those comfort clothes is totally normal in my opinion! I do that on large numbers of my non-work, non-social event days! And I don’t take any photos!
I like the idea of your 3 levels of dress, it sounds similar to the 3-word method of style, which I don’t really use. But even my fashion persona including the word “sassy”- I’m sure there are lots of days when there is nothing sassy about what I wear and I feel OK about that.

Oh, Lise!! I had forgotten about twirling/twisting them up for drying! (It's been many years since I owned a broomstick skirt ha!) Yes, that is how it was done. Actually, my dress came twisted up and tied with some cotton strips. I bet if I twist it up really good after washing it will dry all crinkled again. Thank you!! :D

Carol you need to decide how much energy and time you have for that.
Such a good insight! I once experimented with a little style system that sort of worked off that premise. Basically, you have a home base comfort style (level 1), your happy everyday style (level 2), and an aspirational style (level 3). The aspirational style usually feels a bit uncomfortable, takes more energy to wear, etc. I think DV is probably more aspirational for me, at least for everyday wear. It does take more energy to wear. Boho is very easy for me to dress up or dress down, it feels comfortable, and it's easy to sew, knit, and find. (Well, relatively easy, depending on the style trends, and such.) But I'll always have some DV in my wardrobe. I hope you keep experimenting with Italian in your style! I personally love the reasons you stated as your inspirations as well. I usually have always mixed DV and boho, and will continue to do so. Now I know that ALL of one is not fun for me.

Lise, I so agree! I do think DV is still in my style, just secondary. I actually really love mixing DV and boho, whether in makeup and/or clothing. Historically, I've generally been happiest mixing the two versus wearing one or the other exclusively. So I will continue to mix versus focus on one solely. As for DV, I do agree about keeping it for formal and more special occasions. I have very few of those anymore (if ever), but I am keeping your wise words in mind! Never know when a special occasion might pop up and I will need a good dress or outfit for it.

Jaime, so well said. Thank you for such kind insights. I did learn something and that is worth well, something! The shrinkage still bums me out, but I am hoping to find a similar pattern to sew maybe in the future. I really love those pants.

Cookie, thank you! And that is helpful to hear. I will give that dress a proper wearing!

Roberta, what a great insight about ruts and taking style vacations from them! I love that and never thought about it like that. Thank you!!!

Dee, it is hard with fabrics this day and age. I will say this is where I sometimes still champion polyester. It has its flaws but it has yet to shrink on me :p I really agree: boho is easier for my everyday life. And it feels easier to wear, if I'm honest.

Suz,I love what you said about the old path. It's so true! It goes with what Roberta said about ruts and style vacations. I still LOVE those tropical pants. I'm so tempted to buy a new pair to use as a pattern to sew another pair -- of non viscose fabric I also love the lavender top. It was a $20 clearance item and it's been my favorite this summer. It just feels so fresh and easy to wear. Good reminder not to purge to soon. I won't overhaul my DV wardrobe until next summer. m get a few new items, but won't overhaul anything yet. I might yet find they get some good wear with warmer weather.

Irina, it was viscose. it's odd how it didn't shrink at all until it suddenly shrunk. I have had less shrinking (though still some) with rayon, even though viscose and rayon are almost the same thing. After this, I'm avoiding viscose and cotton-nylon blends. My olive joggers were cotton-nylon and they shrank like crazy too. Style wise I’m no help. I tend to over analyze things and in the recent years, I’ve been forcing myself to listen to my feelings more. I actually find this to be the very best thing for myself too. I can overanalyze and over think things. Following my instincts and joy have been far kind and more fun. I hope that is true for you, dear lady!

Angie, yes, they are viscose. Whaaa-whaaa. I think my days of viscose are over after this experience. I am actually most pleased with the linen pants and lilac ruffle top! The fit is great on the pants. And it's funny because they were both unplanned purchases, bought on a good clearance deal. They just tickled my fancy. I had especially been wanting to try lilac and it found me on a clearance sale. Perhaps another ding for following my heart and not pre-planning too much? My heart wants boho. So onward to BOHO!

I love that lavender top, because I have not seen you wear that color, and it shows you have taste in more than one area.

I find your DV summer inspiring, for many reasons. 1) "Italian" has long been one of my style words that floats in and out 2) I am also interested in that time period with its tiny waistlines, snappy pencil skirts and whatever else they had, and 3) it is cinema-inspired, which is always going to be fun.

I think it is okay to dress differently/more formally, even if you are at home. But it is true, you need to decide how much energy and time you have for that.

Sorry about the laundry tragedy!! The orchid top looks great on you and would work equally with both styles, I think.
Wear the crinkle dress!! I find those deliberately wrinkled fabrics are quite easy to wash.

To sum up Ket I think DV style is your secondary style to Boho. So my advice is to keep the Boho for every day while adding small DV elements, maybe in the form of make up or some other doable addition, and let the full on DV style come to the fore on special occasions. You certainly look authentic in both.

An excellent analysis and a great experiment in style. Sometimes we have to try a new path to discover why we always take the old path! But you can still incorporate some "dolce vita" into evening looks, etc. Those tropical pants were SO great on you that I am sad to hear that one of them is no more....but regardless, you know the style is a real winner. Love that lavender top on you also!

Unworn items always goad us...but weather is a huge factor! I have had summers like the one you describe and almost tossed items but then the following summer the weather changed again and I was glad to have those items in the closet.

Wonderful analysis and such a shame about the shrinkage that you tried to avoid. Its hard to really know with all the fabric blends these days, just how things will wash and wear.
Glad you were able to sort out where your style feels best. I also think that the boho style would align much easier with your everyday lifestyle.

Great analysis as always. Sometimes our sweet spot feels like a rut, and we want to break out of it. Having a clothing vacation can be just the thing. Then you can return to your boho home, which you love and which loves you back.

That shade of lavender is perfect against your hair!

Super duper wrap up, Ket! (Thanks for the shout out, and your sweet words, as always).

"applause"

A successful Summer season! Cream floats to the top, and now you know what's extra delicious for your style

I'm with Irina! You look smashing in these very pretty Ket-esque outfits! The lilac ruffled off-the-shoulder top is KILLER WOW on you. The pants are a great fit too :)

URGH! The tropical pants shrinkage. Are they 100% viscose? You might try pressing them to relax the fibres. In my experience, the only 100% viscose fabric that does not shrink is Lenzing Ecovero. It's a new natural fibre made of wood pulp.

As for the unworn items - no harm! Uncontrollable weather is what it is. You'll wear them next year.

Boho is part of your style soul. SIGNATURE. You know that for sure now. Listen to your feelings and have fun incorporating it back into your looks! It's honest and what the heart wants!

Love these two outfits! I think you look fantastic in them!
I would iron the pants, though. I’m very big fan of ironing but not everyone is ! LOL
I’m sorry about the shrunken items. I don’t know what kind of fabric shrunk but suspect it was viscose. Maybe avoid it in the future? Linen or cotton is much more predictable in the wash.

Style wise I’m no help. I tend to over analyze things and in the recent years, I’ve been forcing myself to listen to my feelings more.

Our trees have started turning yellow around the leaf edges this week. Never have they turned this early in the 20 years we’ve lived here. We even found a few fully yellow aspen leaves! (Photo 1) Fall seems like it’s arriving early this year. School starts in two weeks too. Sooooo, I think a summer wrap-up now is appropriate. Long post ahead. Skip to bottom for last paragraph for gist.

Note; I didn't post many WIWs this summer. It was a busy summer, weird weatherr, lot of repeat outfits. Have included few outfit photos below.

Tropical pants sadness
I wore both pairs a LOT until early July. The fabric of the black pair shrunk after hand washing them, mostly in the waist and hips, but not in length. Prior to this I washed them delicate cool water in the machine. The hand wash water was also cold. Can’t figure it out tbh. What’s ironic is I hand-washed them to avoid shrinkage after my olive jogger slacks horribly shrunk. (Knee jerk reaction: wash all the things by hand.) All my other pants fit the same, so not weight gain. I have considered buying a replacement pair but not sure if I will. Unless we have an unseasonably hot September, there isn’t much time left for summer clothing.

Most surprising outfit: all green shirt and maxi skirt outfit. Almost returned the top because of the fluid ease/volume. Angie was right: styled, it was great! The skirt felt like a total bomb until I felt inspired by Brooklyn’s top and maxi skirt outfits. It’s my new favorite outfit! I actually do love the skirt a lot. It didn’t go with most of my Dolce Vita wardrobe, however. So not a lot of versatility and why I had such a hard time styling it originally. Even though it’s rayon jersey, I will wear it this autumn and winter with tights and my boho stuff. We’ll see how that goes.

Most worn outfit: tropical print pants or oatmeal linen pants, with tank and midi cardigan. Posted at least a couple WIWs about this I think? .Super duper comfy. Wide leg pants was a new style for me and it was awesome! Will definitely try similar silhouettes and styles again next summer.

Most wears:

Off shoulder orchid and black tops.

Oatmeal linen blend pants too -- photos 2-5

Print tropical pants (until shrinkage).

Clove cardigan, which has been worn to utter pills and tatters; it needs replaced somehow.

Green fluid top with jeans or maxi skirt, so breezy and easy.

Navy dresses, both long sleeve and stripy smocked versions.

Cream sleeveless ruffle blouse. Fabric is starting to pill a bit. But gosh, I love this top.

Stone cropped trench, thrifted mid-season. Can’t get enough of it tbh!

Not worn at all:
Crinkle dress. I didn’t have any occasions to wear it at all. And the cut and fabric are so beautiful and lovely, I just felt bad not wearing it more glammed up—so I didn’t. It wasn’t appropriate for church without a topper, which kind of ruins the vibe of it. I also worried about ruining the crinkle fabric if I had to wash it. Being a “broomstick” skirt type fabric, it’s a bit tough to wash and keep the shape. I still do not regret buying it. I do regret not wearing it though. Might sneak in a wear if it warms up before Sept. Just because, fabric be durned.

Band tees. They’re a few years old. Both crew neck and I found myself wishing and wanting more open necklines. I also wore these a lot during the worst of my illness. So not sure how to handle them if I’m honest. However, I actually love them enough I don’t want to dump them either.

Crinkle burnt orange top. It was a bit smaller and cropped in fit than my other tops to begin with. Just never felt quite comfy enough when I would try it on. Also, my strapless bandeau I bought as a quick strapless bra option really wasn’t supportive enough to wear with this top. The cool weather also made it challenging to wear. That was true for all my off-shoulder tops, though the others got a lot of wear on warmer days due to better fit and torso length.

Linen black jumpsuit. Weather was a factor for this one. Also, the first one of these shrunk significantly when washed. I haven't washed this one yet... so I haven't worn it yet lol!

Why DV Didn’t Work Out

Weather was not conducive to Dolce Vita this year. Two-thirds or more of the summer was cool, rainy and even humid. It was just weird for us. Our summers are typically hot summer days bookended by cool mornings and evenings, with average 10-15% humidity.

Some days I struggled this summer to get out of sweats. After all the health stuff sometimes my confidence still fluctuates tbh. Makes me realize I need to consider upgrading loungewear/sweats this year.

Comfort was missing from DV too, which I didn’t think about or reckon on. I don’t think it’s an age thing. Even 10 years ago when I was in my 30s, I craved and wore jersey fabrics and such. I like dressing cool and glam. And I like secret comfort. Need both.

Biggest takeaway: I missed boho.
Boho is my home. I opined about it in my A/W post here. I even chose a boho outfit this summer because I was missing it so much. While I enjoyed my foray into a cleaner lines and 1950s inspired looks, I learned for the future that 1-2 pieces/outfits of this style are plenty. An entire summer wardrobe of it is too much. I missed

softer, drapier fabrics and lines

ease

artsy school teacher wears Anthropologie vibes

juxtaposition.

Often times too, I felt really over dressed in HTT Dolce Vita outfits. It was too much glam. Overall, DV was just outside my comfort zone. (Maybe way outside?)

The no’s helped me find my yes’ as our wise leader Angie pointed out. Her words gave me so much perspective that I really don’t feel this summer’s wardrobe was a failure or a frustration. So thank you to Angie and to all of you <3 Your feedback, wisdom, therapy, and laughter always make my heart shine <3
