Elizabeth is Missing, by Emma Healey -- a first novel, a double mystery told from the perspective of an elderly woman with dementia; captivating and heartbreakingly real (but not too heavy for summer reading)

And maybe not for beach reading, I don't know, but I will recommend generally anyway

Tenth of December, by George Saunders -- brilliant, disturbing, insightful, and provocative short stories

Rachy: Have you ever read the Sarah Kelling & Max Bitersohn mysteries by Charlotte Macleod?
http://www.amazon.com/Family-V....._1_3?s=boo

I haven't started in them yet, but a friend recently recommended them to me, and they apparently have a screwball comedy element to them (which if I remember correctly, you enjoy too?).

Oh fun! Thanks for starting this thread, Glory. I'm going to look up everything mentioned above.

Hm, let's see.

- I enjoyed Hugh Howey's Wool / Dust / Shift books (Sci-Fi).
http://www.amazon.com/Wool-Hug.....38;keyword

- Really liked Donna Tartt's The Goldfinch - although I felt the part in the middle dragged on a bit too long.
http://www.amazon.com/The-Gold.....8;qid=1406

- I'm still savouring Letters of Note - Shaun Usher
http://www.amazon.com/Letters-.....ref=sr_1_1?

And a selection of what's on my own to-read list (fiction and non-fiction):
- A Man Called Ove - Frederik Backman
http://www.amazon.com/Man-Call.....673&s

The book I tell everyone to read if they haven't yet is "The Orange Girl" by Jostein Gaarder. It's light reading but then it's not. One of my favourite books.

For fun: The Husband's Secret, Sisterland. I'm reading A Constellation of Vital Phenomena right now (halfway through?) and *love it* (a bit meatier than the others, but delicious).

This is one of my favourites: The Arcanum: The Extraordinary True Story

It's the tabloid, yet literary, version of the history of porcelain in Europe. I almost exclusively can only get through syfy and mystery novels, so this is truly readable. And fun. Good cocktail party convo.

If you havn't, you must read Krazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan...This is just such a great book...The story looks at the Asian culture through the eyes of one who has gone to the United States and returns with his girl...It is a love story, a story of generations and their view of their culture, and it is a funny story and at times a sad story...I finished it and guess what?...I read it again..I couldn't let them go without more...I hope Kwan has a sequel or more like..it is that good...Hope you havn't read it...you have a treat...
