I agree with the others, footwear is the key for me too. My other staples are linen pants, sometimes they feel cooler than shorts especially if you sit on sticky chairs, & cuffs, I can't wear necklaces they are just too hot.

It's been hot here too but not that hot yet! I find that an accessory or two helps me feel more dressed but doesn't add any extra hot layer. I'm enjoying a stack of bracelets which I swap around depending on what colour I'm wearing. Looks like I made an effort even if I didn't.

Yes, that is why I prefer shorts too in summer. Some people like skirts more, but I don't like the sweaty thigh problem either.

I think dressier sandals is a good start!

Thank you all for your suggestions. Just voicing my frustration already makes me feel a bit better.

Skirts are tricky for me. This is the first summer I've actually tried to wear skirts, but the thigh rubbing and sweating makes me feel even hotter than wearing shorts. This will sound bad, but I just want to open my legs to let some air in!

I think I need to look for dressier shorts in cotton/linen. I've also realised that some of my sandals are super casual and I don't actually like that. I think they drag the outfit down.

Oh, Sanet, I hear you. I live near where Ceit lives and we have hot, muggy, summers, albeit short. I find hot weather dressing tricky.

I love the suggestions you've heard. Wovens are better -- cotton/ linen. Silk if you can hand wash it.

My outfits were pretty similar to what you describe in our summer (long shorts, top, sandals). I live a pretty casual life. So #1 actually felt almost "dressed up."
Much more typical for work-at-home days were 4 and 5. And I admit, this didn't feel much like an "outfit" to me. Sigh.

But one thing that helped me a bit was colour blocking. It was a suggestion of Gaylene's. She mentioned that it helped her to fell pulled together. I used my cobalt bag and colour blocked with it. 2 and 3 are examples. One is with a knit skirt (it wasn't quite as hot that day) but you get the idea.

I've just completed my 3rd summer in south Texas, where the temps can start passing 100F/38C in May and stay that way until September, with a another month or two averaging in the 80s and 90s F/26-35C, and that's before taking into account the humidity. I hate it, so you have my complete sympathy. I have worked out a few formulas, though...for me I also prefer not to suntan, and sunscreen doesn't always cut it, so when I'm out and about I cover up my arms (my legs don't tan as quickly for some reason). So, here are my 'uniforms.' One: mid thigh shorts (fairly roomy so as to de-bombshell their length) + boxy, waist surrending, lightweight, high necked (for sun coverage), woven natural fabric blouse (to allow a ton of airflow...I'm small chested so as long as I choose wisely I can secretly go braless beneath these tops which helps keep me cool) + long sleeved cardigan in cool natural fabrics that isn't too fitted (worn either open or with just the top button buttoned) or super lightweight long sleeve linen jacket. Two: the same blouse & cardigan/jacket but with lightweight. slim-but-not-skin-tight cotton trousers (usually capris). Three: either the trousers or the shorts with a long sleeve light weight blouse, thus eliminating the need for a cardigan. Three: airy woven cotton dress knee length dress, with cardigan/jacket for sun protection. I also have a few summer hats to feel more pulled together: it took awhile to find ones that were cute and also actually shaded my face & neck but it was worth it. They instantly turn a top & blouse into an outfit. Since it's too hot for most accessories, I make sure my blouses have interesting patterns or colours or details like pintucks to stand on their own. I also use brooches, since they're not touching me! Oh and I make sure I have all of my outfit ingredients in a few different colours so I can play with colour combos. I live a casual life, so my shoes are almost all casual flats, but they're nice leather and mainly in darker colours, which I think makes them look a bit more intentional.

Woven clothes seem to automatically look a bit fancier/more intentional than knits and they're SO much more comfortable in hot weather. They've become my secret weapon. Hope that helps!

Oh, Sanet, I understand completely. Our summers are very hot and humid also, and I feel like a scraggy soppy mess when I am running around outside. Can you find some tops that work with the humidity? Do you like linen button downs? I like wearing those and rolling up the sleeves, because I need the sun coverage.

Maybe some looser non-denim shorts? Would you consider skirts? Like a knee-length crinkle linen?

It is, for me, very hot and humid at the moment here. Temperatures around 35 degrees C (95F).

I am a SAHM, so mostly my outings are trips to the shops and taking DSx2 to their activities. I've been to the shops a few times in the last while and although I didn't think I looked so bad when I left home, I wanted to cringe when I saw my reflection in shop windows. I felt unbelievably scruffy and not pulled together at all. I think I just have difficulty getting dressed in this heat - I tend to only wear casual knee length shorts, denim or cotton, with tops and flat sandals.

The other issue I am struggling with at the moment is possibly just laziness. DSx2 have some activity on every day of the week. These generally last only an hour at a time. I just don't always feel to dress up for such a short outing. Do you?

So, should I just stop the laziness and dress smarter? Any other survival tricks you can suggest will be appreciated.
