I have several leather bags I carry in the summer, including two light-colored bags (pics 1 and 2, by Emm Kuo and Marni). But I usually carry a couple of different canvas and denim totes (pic 3: the first is a basic canvas bag that I sewed a vintage quilt scrap onto, the second is a Gap bag from the early 2000s). Especially when it's really hot out, I prefer a lighter cloth tote.

My husband spoiled me and bought me this amazing Gucci canvas tote for Christmas, and I can't wait to bust it out for summer! Beyond that, I use my leather bags in summer colors, including my fun Kate Spade "peacock" tote from quite a few years ago, and my beloved gold Rebecca Minkoff backpack. I also have a bright red backpack, a light tan satchel, a white Kate spade stachel, and a medium blue LV crossbody.

I have a grey-taupe bag, a red bag and a cognac bag that I use all year round. I recently bought a white bag (pic) and I plan to wear it for spring and summer only (this was not marketed as a summer bag, but as a year-round bag, by the way). It’s not structured, but slouchy, and can be worn carrying in the hand, shoulder, cross body.

If money was no object, I would love a woven leather bag in a light colour for spring-summer, and I regularly look at vinted for Reptile’s House bags (pic).

Rafia… I am scared of it pilling or somehow destroying my clothes, so no. That said, I would love an Ibeliv bag (pic) and there are a couple other brands that look beautiful to me. One is Limaia Paris, but can’t find a proper link to th brand, but check this: https://brussosa.com/en/collections/limaia-rafias. The other one is Maison Bengal: https://thatsnotmyage.com/insp.....ens-lives/

The one I reach for most often in summer (and a lot of other times, too) is my Madewell Transport Camera crossbody in sage green. It came with two straps, and I bought another, and I do like to switch them out, though I use the green and off-white stripe one 90% of the time. When I first got the bag, I thought it was a little too small, but then I started carrying a much smaller wallet, and it has become my favorite.

My older favorite summer bag is a Fossil Vickery, which I love because it has cream, taupe, and tan elements, so it looks matchy with a lot of summer shoes. I don't reach for this one as much anymore, because it is larger than what I've gravitated toward lately.

If I'm wearing my silver sandals, I'll grab my silver Kurt Geiger Kensington crossbody bag, which is also a year-round favorite. It hasn't held up as well as I would hope for; the lining has torn, he finish on the bag has worn somewhat, and the edges of the handle have some fraying threads. It is the perfect size, so it has gotten a lot of love.

The AllSaints Evaline crossbody that I bought at NAS last year has not become the workhorse that I anticipated. I think it's a kind of odd shape or something. Maybe it will come into its own, though, like the Madewell did for me.

If I need a big bag or want to take one on the town bike, I use my light gray Rebecca Minkoff Quilted Julian backpack, from NAS years ago. Still love it, though it's not especially handy for an everyday bag.

I have stopped buying black bags for years now. I am not usually a bag-swapper-outer so I use the same one year-round. My last 3 have been tan leather, light bronze pleather and now light grey pleather which I feel will always match my hair! I had an earlier grey one as well from a very long time ago and somehow the lighter bags just feel better to me. I am too lazy somehow to bag-swap so I only do it for special dressy occasions. My summer is not usually sweltering hot so I don’t notice any “stickiness” of bag.

My favourite summer bag is a roomy, semi-structured shoulder bag. White with tiny parts in grey and beige. Goes with anything. The material is neither leather or pleather, (I don't know the name), however, it seems practical, as dirt can easily be removed with a damp cloth.

I also have a fun collection of fabric totes and shoppers in light/bright colours and summer-ish patterns.

I don't use straw bags anymore, as my previous ones scratched and partly ruined some of my clothes.

I mostly use two bags in summer...both are straw and second hand. A third is leather but has the color and texture of straw, so it seems right for summer, others are summer colors, blue, red, white, and light weight such as a canvas, olive bag and a canvas black which are perfect for a trip to the zoo or botanic gardens with lots of walking. Pay attention to color and weight and activities of summer. If you travel a lot. You will want something light weight to hold all your stuff, but light weight.

Here is my summer collection. I usually just wore my leather bags in lighter colors, like this white, pink and cream. Then last year I got rattan bag on a whim, and I wore it all the time. No snagging at all. I have it with me on vacation. And just recently I got jute crossbody but I haven’t worn it yet.

I have a couple of Kate Spade light-colored crossbody bags for summer wear. They are a very lightweight leather too, and on the smaller side. I used to like le Sak bags in the summer…it’s been quite a few years since I had one. They were summery, lightweight, and unstructured. “Crocheted” fabric.

After much searching and comparing, I bought this black nylon bag from Anthro. I wanted something black, but lightweight and with little or no trim. This fit the bill, but I also looked at a leather bag from And Other Stories and an AllSaints version. The crescent shape suits my minimal needs perfectly, and the D-rings mean I can swap out the strap. There are lots of versions out there if you want more pockets or space.

Last year I bought a lime green leather bag, quite similar, but it is just a little crowded when I put wallet, phone, keys, inhaler, and a comb in it. I still love it, though, and it is a nice bright contrast to the black version.

There is nothing worse than a sticky faux leather bag in the summer. I like lighter color leathers. I will also be completely obnoxious and mention that I literally just thrifted a vintage Bottega Veneta woven bag last week and the jute is in great condition, much more so than the leather interestingly. (Picture below is similar, not the actual bag.) Straw bags tend to wear less well in my limited experience.

A number of bags in my Finds (not posted here) have bitten the dust -- a reminder not to buy pleather bags, especially totes, because they start to look ratty pretty quickly. I need to start using the yellow Petals and Peacocks bag. And the cross body shown as mustard is actually yellow green, but mustard would work for summer.

Living in a desert climate where the heat saps my desire to carry anything heavy (ie leather bags, especially with hardware), light weight summer bags are a must. My go-to is a woven palm fiber bag I bought in central Mexico. This bag has gone the distance — it looks good after 5 months of solid use each of the last 5 years. I also have a collection of hand loomed bags from southern Mexico. And I love canvas totes from museums and libraries and the like — my favorite is from the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich.

Oh, summer bags are my nemesis. I still have yet to figure this out. I'm trying.

In the past, I have mostly used my nylon Rebecca Minkoff backpacks. But they are looking awfully worn out and tired, which is not surprising, considering how I treat them and what I have used them for. I need to retire the bright blue one and the pewter is all scratched up and ratty looking but I will probably keep it another year or two.

I love the look of straw or jute or rattan and used to get a new one of those every summer -- but I haven't found one that works for my needs in the past decade or more, so have not owned one. I never want to spend much on them, which is part of the problem, since they do not tend to last all that long. And then there is the waterproofness issue. I carry water around with me...and it spills...

This summer I will probably use my Pom Pom London bags, with different guitar straps. The bright red of the one and the silver of the other keep them feeling "lighter." But that is for in town. For more casual outings, I would like another nylon bag of some kind. Am in the process of looking at options for travel, as well.

The cornflower blue Everlane and the Bellroy sipstop are under consideration.

There’s a hole in my closet when it comes to S/S bags. Heavy/dark leather feels off. My fall back has been a soft cross-body pouch or light weight navy lePliage. Sometimes I’ll use a me-made quilted tote.

I’ve seen some rattan bags, but wonder about snagging garments. Jute? Woven leather strips? Lighter coloured leather? Any ideas? Are you seeing anything interesting trending for this purpose? What’s your favourite warm weather bag?

(My handbags in Finds)
