Hey Vix! Always happy to hear from you. I would love to shop consignment (and sell some stuff on consignment) but it's not available near me. I am envious that so many forum members have that available. I have occasionally looked at the internet consignment sellers mentioned on the forum, but usually delivery costs here are expensive. The fit of dresses is much more problematic than tops or skirts so returns are more likely. I just returned a BR dress that I tried out and it cost me about $40 in delivery. Return was also expensive but I might be able to to get that back through Paypal. I am really hoping that next Spring will bring longer dresses (which is one of the issues that I have).

Hi Brooklyn --

Always great to see your outfits so I enjoyed the behind-the-scenes analysis of your challenge.

Re your summer dress hunt -- if you have any handy, have you thought about consignment so you can get luxe for less? Ours even do end-of-season markdowns just like full-price retail. It might take your mind off patterned tops. ;)

ps very glad we have opposite seasons as this will be handy for me soon, ha

Anchie, thanks. I would like to move towards more earthy shades. So something in the caramel/bronze family would be ideal. Assuming I can find it! I am also thinking olive green, white, dark blue. Possibly burgundy. I have my eye on these skirts, but they are not really summer weight skirts (although we are moving into winter here).

Katerina, right back at you!

JAileen, thanks! I use black and white as the anchor of my colour palette, and work my way up from there. I do love Autumn colours.

Thanks Rachy. Yes, it was basically a "what do I reach for" exercise. I found the day to day aspect of it a little less daunting than setting aside a day (or more!) for a full try-on/closet edit.

Your outfits are always stellar, so it was interesting to read about your thought process. I’ve thought it was interesting how you appear to wear an autumn palette, yet black is such an integral part of your wardrobe. But it works! I love when you wear tan and black together.

Shevia, I don't know, but I think boots are my chocolate :)

ML, thanks!

LaP, thanks! I think for me it's compounded by the fact that I am not a great colour mixer and I find coloured bottoms more challenging to wear than coloured tops. What's that about? I think that's another reason why I like pattern. The colour mixing has been done for me.

Bijou, next time! It is difficult when our summers are so long not to boredom buy towards the end. Although summer is technically over we probably have another 2 months of warm weather ahead of us. I realise now that it makes more sense (if I am bored) to add a coloured skirt that I can wear once a week for the next 8 weeks with different tops than to add a pretty patterned top. The top would compete with all my other patterned tops for wear and I would be lucky to wear it 3 times in the next 8 weeks. Balance is the key!

Thanks Karen! I hope things warm up for you soon.

I always love your outfits! And to get this thoughtful analysis is icing on the cake. As I move into the Northern Hemisphere spring/summer (despite the 3 feet of snow we got over the past 3 days) I will look back at your 30 30 carefully. I like the patterned/plain formula as well, and need to think about the pieces I need to make it work.

Your analysis really made me think I wish I had done the challenge too! It is great to hear your insights into what you need to get even more variety from what you own, and it is not statement pieces. I am very much like you and drawn to statement pieces, however I have recognised that it is all about getting the balance right.

Your challenge was informative for me, too. Thanks for doing all the heavy lifting! I greatly enjoyed seeing pics of your outfits and love your style. Your discoveries from your challenge are week thought out and articulate. You have identified quite a few important factors to your style. I do think adding a couple of solid color bottoms to your closet is going to not only give you many options, but promote extra happiness factors, too.

Thanks Lynn!

Thanks Tan. Well, we do like similar colours and geometrics so maybe something could be arranged :)

Thanks Sally. I think taking a photo everyday helped me to change up accessories. You become aware how often you are repeating the same accessories. I also have a tendency to work in sets: I like to wear x bracelet with y necklace. I tried to break that habit during the challenge and mix it up a little.

Joy, thanks. That is exactly what I am thinking. Some kind of light warm neutral like tan or camel. Or maybe olive green. I am seeing more brown shades in the shops now so hopefully there will be more next Spring. White is a possibility too but it always makes me nervous because I don’t have Angie’s super powers. But I’d be prepared to try a white denim skirt because denim washes so easily.

Smittie, thanks. Who knows where this will take me? I might even stray into the world of coloured pants :)

Aw, thanks Angie! The hunger pangs have started already. But I need to focus on essentials not statements. It’s just that statements are sooo much more fun :)

SarahD8, I feel the same way about dark florals and geometrics. There are so many around and they are so attractive. It can be hard to find solid coloured items that are interesting and give the same sort of lift in mood.

Sara and Suz, I also liked the flexibility of the build as you go approach. I put aside a separate area in my closet where I moved items that I chose as I wore them. In the beginning I tended to pull outfits (tops and bottoms) but as the challenge went on I would pull more single items from my main wardrobe and ask myself “now, how many ways could I wear this item with those items that I have already chosen and worn?” That’s when the issues started to reveal themselves. You can see that my most versatile items were worn early in the challenge. Later on, lots of single wear items crept in.

Suz, I love those tube skirts. My ruched skirt got worn this summer a lot both as part of the challenge and otherwise. I wear it a lot casually too. It is so comfortable and not precious as you say. I am just wearing them a little differently lately. Casually, I now tend to wear my ruched skirt with a rounded hem, fluid fit, hip length tee (plain or patterned). Add sneakers and long necklace and I am good to go. A couple of years ago I would wear it with a longer, loose fit, tunic style top. But the midi skirt is a really nice change. I am hoping the Anthro skirt will be good for casual wear with sneakers.

Elizabeth, glad this resonated. You too with the summer tops, eh? “Balance”
is going to be my new wardrobe mantra. Sterling has fit, fit, fit. I have “balance”. It sounds very zen too. Thanks for your comments.

MJ, thank you so much. Your comments are so lovely, as always.

Brooklyn, it has been a joy watching your capsule develop and your style is fabulous. For your non-black solids for summer, may I suggest that you determine a couple of non-black favorite light to medium neutrals and work with them. A shade of white or even camel bottom may allow you to wear those patterned tops that now only work with black, in new ways. Keep the same silhouette that works for you (like long over lean).

I think adding non-black solid bottoms is going to open up a world of possibilities!
It sounds like you are really on top of your wardrobe, enjoy it, and only need to make a few tweets here are there at this point.
You are a true veteran!

Wow, fantastic insights, Brooklyn. I enjoyed following your challenge and learned a lot from reading this post.

I also have the problem of too many patterned items on both top and bottom in my summer wardrobe. I hope to begin addressing that this year. I really like the floral and nature themed prints that tend to feature in summer collections so it’s hard to resist snapping them up.

Great post! I'm thinking I may do something similar this spring because spring is my worst fashion season. I think the way you described with picking the pieces as you go would work better for me than trying to choose all 30 at the beginning of the challenge.

This is really interesting and instructive, Brooklyn. I really like your strategy of not determining ahead of time what the capsule would be but selecting (and rejecting or keeping) items as you went along. That's a great idea for a careful wardrobe audit based on emotions when wearing the item. I think I might borrow this idea as we move into spring/ summer. I always do a fairly vigorous edit/ review pre-season but last year I found there were items I was not reaching for anyway and I never entirely determined why.

It sounds as if you recognized a need for more solid non-black "completers" in Angie's sense of the term. That makes sense to me, based on your closet as I know it.

ETA, another thing that resonates for me...your preference this year for the midi asymmetrical skirts. I had trouble last year wearing my tube skirts. I mean, I wore them -- I wore them to death, in fact -- yet again! -- after saying I would try to wear less. But they are so darn useful to me because they travel well (knit fabric), are not overly structured or too precious for my at-home life, yet look dressier than shorts, etc. etc. etc. But I was very tired of the silhouette and wanted something new. I am excited to have found at least one dress with a different silhouette going into summer.
