I agree with Vix re: linings helping to smooth things out. I think the pants drape better when they're draping over a smooth lining rather than my lumps and bumps!

Also, I sometimes get thigh chafing issues with unlined trouser pants. It's another pet peeve of mine, how even high end trousers will often have flappy, unfinished inside seams that can rub and chafe. (Jeans are seamed differently with a flat felled seam so this is never an issue with jeans.) In any case a lining puts all the wrong sides of seams in between the two layers of fabric, so no potential for chafing.

Unlined skirts bug me far less because it's super easy to just wear a slip under them!

Hmm. I hadn't thought of that, Vix. I can't imagine you have lumps and bumps of any kind!! And yes, slips can bunch and twist -- yuck. Silk long johns are a bit different. But I'm not sure I would really enjoy wearing those, either! So I guess it's wait and see.

The thing about unlined pants/skirts in a very fine/lightweight fabric (including wool) is that they are unforgiving about lumps and bumps. Sure, a high-quality superfine has a beautiful "drape" -- but it's draping against things I personally don't want highlighted!

Sizing up doesn't really fix the issue as when one moves -- or the wind blows fabric against the body -- there you are.

So if one is at all self-conscious about the proverbial jiggle when ya wiggle...be aware that thin + unlined may require a little extra thought as to underlayers.

[Which may be needed for warmth anyway depending on climate/time of year!]

Personally I feel that items at the Theory etc price point should be lined in silk, hemp, or some other natural fabric but I don't see that happening on the manufacturer's end.

Signed, Yes: I'm still annoyed every time I wear my ancient Theory pencil skirt and the slip twists around while I walk -- but I refuse on principle to pay to have it lined, hrrrumph.

Sveta, I'm picking it up at the border, yes. It's just not worth it to me to order from Nordstrom's any other way. So that's how I'll do it in the future. It will make ordering a lot easier except in winter when the drive would be really bad (over an icy bridge). It means committing half a day to pick it up, but that's the time it would take to shop in a bricks and mortar situation anyway.

Rae, how did it look on the customer? Curious to know.

Interesting about the wool pants theory, MsMaven. Mr. Suz has pants that are lined (mostly to knee) and unlined.

To Diana's question about Theory pants: As far as I've ever seen, all are unlined.

Now, I read somewhere--can't remember where--that good quality pants are unlined and this is better! Good wool drapes better. (Think men's pants.) Liners are often used in less expensive pants that aren't cut and tailored so well.

I am sensitive to wool, but in the ten or more years I've owned Theory pants, I've never had a pair that irritate my skin or are itchy as are most wool sweaters, or cashmere for that matter.

Diana, it depends. My Club Monaco wool shorts are unlined and it's totally not an issue for me. They feel great -- not itchy at all. So it's dependent on the fabric. I do think it would make the pants less warm, but I have some silk underwear I could use in winter time, so that's okay. In the end, it might make them more trans-seasonal for me. I won't wear lined pants in the summer. Whereas I did wear the CM shorts.

I think my Emery (Theory) pants are also unlined. They feel great, too. But they are a much heavier flannel type material. Super cozy winter type pants.

Thank you so much for all your thoughts and insights on my suit threads. Just wanted you to know that while I haven't made an absolute decision, I am resting easy in my indecision and still having fun with fashion! :-)

After all, I still have almost 2 full months for a return. I hope I won't be deliberating that long, but in the meantime, I can hang onto this and compare it to other options. I do think I will keep the trousers, regardless, because they are very good value and extremely comfortable, and I do not own blue trousers.

Meanwhile, this morning I ordered this Theory Lanai to try. Given my body type it is unlikely to be a winner, but I love the style so much it's worth a go -- I can always return it if it doesn't work. Besides, it was a YLF order! I'd had it in my shopping cart for weeks but kept hesitating. When Angie told me to try it, that was all the encouragement I needed to take the plunge. (Poor woman, she is so sick of hearing me pine for it; she wants me to put it on my body and get over this obsession once and for all!) :-)

I also ordered the pants that go with it. Rae assures me they are not this short in real life, and there may be some additional seam allowance to let them down anyway. I ordered two sizes for comparison (and insurance). With Nordstrom notes and the sale price on these items, the total wasn't bad.

I may end up returning the whole lot, but at least I can get a sense of the fit, the style, and the quality. Another reason I sprung for this Lanai as opposed to others (in addition to the sale price) was that it is made of wool, unlike the newest ones which include a large poly component. Finally, I think there is a good chance that this soft blue-grey might be flattering to me and a nice alternative to true navy.

There's really only one place to try Theory in Toronto and they don't have all sizes or styles. Still, if this style doesn't work, but the overall fit does, I will go there. SOMEtimes you can get really lucky and find it at the Runway at Winners, but not necessarily the items you are seeking in the sizes you want. That's better for serendipitous discoveries, like the Theory slim moto pants and turtleneck sweater I picked up last year in Vancouver.

Thanks again for all your assistance and I will keep you updated!
