Another toothpick-legged reporting in. You did't say how old you are, but I found, when I was young, that mini skirts were my friend and helped make my legs look more proportional. Also, stay away from flared and even a-line skirts, sticking to pencil skirts that narrow at the hem or the jersey tube skirts. I have had some luck with pleated skirts too. Work at finding your best length because that can make a big difference. You may be able to wear mini skirts, knee length and maxi (full length) skirts for variety. Patterned stockings and tights can give your legs more shape. Try a small fishnet.

Hey people, I'm glad I am not alone in this. I can't remember the last time I wore a skirt...I'm ever in trousers and I'd love to start wearing skirts. I don't have the confidence. The comments I get 'why I don't wear skirts' are just enough. My family thinks I have nice legs but I'm just not proud of them. How can I confidently wear skirts/dresses and feel good about it? I'll appreciate.

I am glad to see others have the stick legs as well. I rarely if ever wear a short dress or skirt (meaning above the knee) because people always make comments that are unwelcome. I do on occasion wear a pencil skirt but right now I have not felt confident enough to wear anything exposing my calves. It makes me feel less alien to know others have the same kinds of issues. Personally I don't think my legs look all that bad. . . but it's just the feeling that someone is going to look at me the wrong way or say something rude that prevents me from wearing what I wish I could wear! I envy women who can wear capri pants. They look like such a joke on me. Of course, everyone wears capri pants these days (but me!) Pants and long skirts are what I always end up wearing and that is kind of a cop-out. I am also petite, and so this is compounded by the wearing of the long skirts. . . Wish I could have been born with thick legs like nearly everyone else on the planet.
Ah, the grass is always greener, as they say. I have so many friends that complain about their short, thick legs and large ankles!!!

My legs are shapely but thin -I think- but I do have larger calves so they don't look that skinny. BUT I have a large bust so I like to emphasize my legs. I think that shorter shorts and skirts give the illusion that they are larger, maybe it's because there is more flesh to see. Crop pants work wonders on making long legs look shorter, especially if they are a light color. Just take a look at all the no-no's for Pretty Pears and you should be sorted!

I'm exactly the same. I hate my long, skinny legs and I'm shy because of it too. Your right about how its hard to find skinny jeans. I don't know about you, but I live in Luxembourg and theres a shop where they have skinny jeans that fit me properly:) its called Pimkie. You should go for skinny jeans, don't wear straight-legged jeans cause they just emphasize the fact that you haven't got curvy legs. As for your upper body, try tight fitting tops and also try tucking in shirts. It actually make your hips look wider which will make your legs look better too. (This is what its like for me) and something else: get fatter:) just eat whatever you like and eat a lot and frequently;) hope this helps:D

I admire Alek for her bravery..... Seeing her pic sort of scared me a little bit.....its a reminder of how my legs really look like. I guess my fear of wearing dresses and skinny jeans is also increased by the fact that in some black communities (am only referring to us, here in South Africa), being slightly bulky is the acceptable way, especially as a married woman. Being skinny as Alek sometimes results in people calling you names or saying that you are sick, etc... One thing I've realised is that life is too short, and as I'm approaching my 40's (I'm blessed with good genes, I actually look like I'm 20), I'm slowly starting to accept my body......

I'll add that around here, in Boston, the skinnier the skinnies, the better. Your skinny legs would be quite the asset for rocking skinnies.

And I didn't know who Alek was so I looked her up:
http://concreteloop.com/2010/0.....t/60562729

She ROCKS that mini dress! Often it is better to embrace what you have and learn to proudly flaunt it, rather than hide it away under long skirts.

Welcome! Thank you for your indepth profile - it really helps when giving advice.

I used to have skinny toothpick legs and now I miss them dearly...

I assume that thick, wooly, patterned tights are out of the question is South Africa so I suggest that you choose streamline, feminine shoes that will not accentuate your thin pins - avoid anything chunky or clunky.

Look for clothing that will add a bit of bulk such as cargo pants.

When you can, post some photos - they really help.

Good luck!

Thank you Clearlyclaire for the warm welcome and for the tips. You're right about the super-wide leg pants, they're bad news..... I'm only realising this now. I'll try a pencil skirt.... Can you believe that my 'skinny legs' phobia has got me missing church as well..... In my church we only wear dresses and skirts...I got bored of wearing long skirts that sweep the floor, so I just stopped going......that aint right! Shiny, I appreciate your comments about the boots as well......I'll hunt for a pair of boots that I can wear with a pencil skirt, tights or skinny jeans - its not easy to find them though! I'm assuming that flat boots will be the best for me cos I think high heeled boots will only emphasize my toothpick legs..... My first test will be on skinny jeans, then I can progress to an above- the- knee pencil skirt......I have to take baby steps on this, but I will definately give it a try...

First things first, you need to hunt down a pair of tall boots that will fit your calves. Because if your calves are 13 inches or less, it's not that easy these days. For example I need 13 inch circumference/13 inch shaft - this is how limited my choices are and why I haven't bought new tall boots in years and years: http://www.zappos.com/womens-b.....arity/asc/) .... It will be easier if your legs are long, but not much more.

My suggestion is to find the boots first. Tucking skinnies into tall boots will add some weight to your legs and go a long way towards helping your eye get accustomed to seeing your legs in skinny jeans. Tall boots will do the same for skirts and dresses.

Booties, of course, are an option too. But I've found that adding a chunky bootie that is loose around the ankles has the effect of making my skinny legs and ankles look overwhelmed, and like a kid playing dress up in mom's or dad's shoes. We can wear boot styles that are looser but you really have to watch the proportions to get it just so -- just-right loose, not drowning loose.

Another great option for you, in bootwear, is a boot with tons of scrunch. This will add weight to your legs, like legwarmers added weight to dancer's legs in the 80s! Would you consider cowboy boots? That's another option. (I'm personally debating it myself... )

Get the boots first. Because it may be a long hunt. But once you find the right pair, then finding skirts, dresses, skinnies will be much easier.

Hi Andi! Keep in mind that some people will think your legs are beautiful, no matter how you feel, but here are a few tips from a fellow toothpick leg. :)

It helps if you keep the garment in proportion to your legs. A wide, stiff A-line skirt or extra wide leg trousers will just make your legs look lost. A slim pencil skirt that tapers at the knee is a good bet. For jeans, a skinny is okay, but I've found that something super snug like a jegging jean only emphasizes the thinness of the leg. Better a slim straight or a cigarette pant instead. Also a color other than black or super dark wash denim will give a little more presence to your leg.

For skirts and dresses, a soft fabric seems to help, and textured tights in a color other than black might add some visual bulk. And pay attention to the spot where your shorts end. The common rational is to stop your hemlines at a slim spot on your leg, but you want to do the opposite. If there is a curve anywhere, that's a good place for the shorts to end (assuming it's not too short, of course). Also the legs of your shorts should be narrow and not wide because that will only make your thighs look lost.

Good luck and let us know how it goes. Pictures will help once you are able to post on YLF, and welcome.
