I'm an IT with only 4-5 inches between my waist and hip measurement. I get a perfect fit in almost every J Crew pant I've ever tried on, so I was bitterly disappointed when I tried on the Hutton. The high waist was just too snug around the top for my liking. If I sized up to fit my waist, I would have had to alter the hip; if I chose the smaller size that fit my hip, I'd have to alter the waist. Depending on your hip-waist difference, though, you may or may not have that problem.

I've tried both styles of jacket and prefer the 1035 (large bust, broad shoulders, long torso--it doesn't fight against these the way the Aubrey seems to, in a way). I think you should try both--the Aubrey may look better with the Huttons, a la K. Hepburn--and I second the call for a suit with two different styles of pants. That's brilliant, actually, especially for your climate. The navy pinstripe is gorgeous but a little lustrous in person, for the record.

My interview suit was from JCrew, but that was four years ago and it looks they're style has changed. I'm currently getting it dry cleaned so I can donate it to Dress for Success. I shrunk out of it.

Without having read through the other comments, I just want to say that the gray blazer that I got recently and was so excited about -- the one that comes in petite and fits me like a dream -- is the J.Crew 1035 jacket. I love it. Mine is heather gray, but the navy pinstripe is gorgeous too, and I am considering getting it in a few months if the one I have gets a lot of wear (which I think it will, but so far we're still in summer and it's not the weather for it).

The Aubrey jacket would be too shrunken for my figure, I can just tell. The 1035 jacket hits a mid to low hip and is perfect for my petite size and shape -- not so long that it makes me look stumpy, but not so short that it makes me look boxy and topheavy. (We've discussed how cropped or high hip-level jackets don't work on me -- a jacket that adds bulk only at my midsection, and nothing at all over my hips, only works if I'm also wearing a flared skirt that adds volume to my hips. Otherwise it looks like my waist and hips are the same circumference, which is NOT the look I'm going for!). Also, the 1035 jacket is nicely tailored -- nipped in at the waist and flaring out gently over the hips -- so as to give the impression that I actually have a waist.

I don't know if these are things you are concerned about with your figure, but my gut says the 1035 jacket will look better on you than the Aubrey jacket. But you could get them both and compare! At least you can send yours back easily.

Una,

I really like the Aubrey jacket and Hutton trousers. Would you get them hemmed for heels? I can't really see them with flats (do you ever wear flats?). Potentially stumpifying with flats.

If it helps, I bought super 120s suiting from JCrew recently. I was a tiny bit disappointed that my trousers weren't lined. I feel like they stretch and need to be dry cleaned more frequently than they would if they were lined. All the dry cleaning means they'll wear out sooner. However, I do like their cuts and the quality of the fabric and overall have been very happy with them. Definitely worth a go at ordering it to see if it works and if you like the fabric.

As for the skirt, I wouldn't buy it. I think the recommendation to buy two bottoms really depends on a couple of things coming together. First, that you'll actually want to wear both types of bottoms. You're not so keen on the skirt, so strike that as no. Second, that the style is one that you'll wear long enough that you will wear the hard-wear bottom pieces out before you wear out the jacket. JCrew is fashion-y enough that you'll have the suit for a few years of hard wear, but it isn't like you'll have it for ten years. So, second one, strike as no too. However, keep in mind that you'll probably dry clean the bottoms much more often, accelerating the wear on them and making them shinny from pressing much sooner than the jacket.

If you think you will really wear the heck out of the jacket and you want a third piece to equalize the wear on the jacket, why not buy a second pair of trousers in a different shape? There is absolutely no rule that says your suit has to be a jacket, a pair of trousers and a skirt! Two pairs of trousers in different silhouettes will give you more versatility for tops, but still maintain the bottom to top wear-out ratio.

So that's my opinion, for what it's worth!

I do like the 1035 jacket - a slightly more unique style maybe. But it could be too long for your frame. The Audrey jacket is a great classic. The trousers look very nice! I don't know about the skirt but that's because I'm not a skirt girl. Depends on how much "suiting" you want to be able to do. If you feel you have a need to wear a suit more than once in a while, I'd go ahead and get the skirt to have the most flexibility.

I don't see the skirt as a needed third piece at all.

I did see a bright purple polyester big ol' shoulder padded, double breasted jacket with elasticized waist suit in Value Village the last time I was in there - maybe I should have tried that on! (lol)

i don't want the skirt, nor do I feel the need for it. Just wondering if it's seen as a needed thirt piece.

I think your Bailey dress plus boots will be better than a suit, and knowing you, you'll probably thrift the perfect suit!

Una - you are so sweet to think of me! I actually ordered the new Bailey 44 dress and if it fits, will be also buying some red booties to wear with it. If that all works out, no budget left for a suit (lol)! And J Crew doesn't work for me - their petite sizes only go up to 12 (if I remember correctly) and I'm sometimes a 14 depending on the cut. The animal print J Crew pencil skirt didn't even do up on me :(

As for your options here, I love the Aubrey jacket and the trousers. I think they'd work well together - what colour are you thinking? I'm not sure I'd go with the skirt to be honest - would you get a lot of wear out of it?

I prefer the 1035 jacket and the hutton trouser is fab. But I am taller and so the longer jacket appeals. This is a keep/return picture shot you must do before you decide....

I am thinking of ordering a suit from j. crew. I think it would add to my style goals of simple, androgynous versatile statement pieces. I was going to have one made but have realized that I have neither the time nor energy to deal with that process, plus the tailor I was considering apparently ruined my hairdresser's daughter's wedding gown by shortening instead of lengthening it!

Anyway, of the j. crew suit styles and colors, does anyone have suggestions? I'm thinking navy pinstripe.

The Aubrey jacket:

http://www.jcrew.com/womens_ca...../53998.jsp

The 1035 jacket:

http://www.jcrew.com/womens_ca...../28135.jsp

The Hutton trouser:

http://www.jcrew.com/womens_ca...../51803.jsp

I like the wider leg trousers and prefer the Aubrey jacket, but would those be odd together? Also, is a skirt necessary?

Would love thoughts! Shannon, are you still considering a j. crew suit?
