Thanks, Thistle! I saw the 15% offer, too, which is definitely a help at that price point. The heel on the first pair is too high; too bad, as other than that it's perfect. The second pair is worth pondering.

That's a very good point, smittie. I'm also liking how very dark the suede can look, unlike smooth leather which can be reflective.

I think all the suede ones have the same feel as Kate's. The ones with the laces have a different vibe I think.

Here are a few from Ted and Muff.

They run $360 or so full price. I was offered 15% off when I went to the webpage. Don't think they run many sales as custom orders is their thing.

Vix, do you know the price range for Ted and Muffy? When I hear "custom" I usually think "top product, top price." But I'll look into it, thanks!

Thistle, that is very true. I'm trying not to be too particular. I'm honestly fairly average in this area, just kind of... lengthened. I think that fabric with some stretch will be comformable; at least, I'd like to try.

Tanya, they're possible. There are several pairs on ebay right now. But they're still priced at more than I want to pay, probably because of the Kate Effect. (Other tall Aquatalias are not as expensive.) I would really like to spend no more than... oh, $300. I will look at revising that if I must.

Just trying to confirm I understood you correctly, are the actual Rumbas out of question because of the budget? I think I have seen them sold recently on couple of different websites.

I'd look at Ted and Muffy.

Tall boots are more about fit than anything. Not only do you need to know where your calf starts, but also it's circumference. If you have narrow calves or wide ones you'll need different brands.

Hi Ginger -- given your specific needs and prefs, why not look into custom boots from Duo (brand changed to "Ted and Muffy" now, interesting choice despite heritage connection...)?

No experience with them and I can't recall if YLFers have used them, but I've read lots of positive comments re fit/construction from folks in the Duo era, anyway!

I realize that most of the names I mentioned are recommended for cold/wet/slushy weather, which isn't how most people think of Texas. But those makers are known for practical, comfortable footwear that doesn't look like gear. And most comfort-focused boots tend to look very casual if not actually gear. Besides, it does get cold/wet/slushy/icy in my part of Texas.

It's still practically August (i.e. HOT), but my dad mentioned Christmas lists today...

When it's cool, black footwear is about all I wear with skirts and dresses. I have classic black riding boots and Miz Mooz lace-up boots. Last fall I added Chelseas and midcalf Eccos, and wore them almost exclusively. I did feel the lack of a pump and a more refined boot. This summer I added pumps. But tall boots with a simple, refined look I'm still missing. The Duchess sporting her "Rhumba" Aquatalias confirms that I'm on the right track.

I'm picky on this one! My legs are long-ish (17" floor to base of
knee), and my calf starts 10" up. All of my tall boots swell out 1-2"
lower than this, and it's starting to bother me more. Especially when the top of the boot ends at the widest part of my calf (14-15"). Stretch material
should eliminate this issue.

Also:
* Comfort. Feet are low volume with short toes and a high arch.
* Point/almond-ish toe.
* Mid-height heel: 2" - 2 3/4" max.
* Sturdy spike heel, like Kate's Rhumbas, or a Cuban. No stiletto or block.
* Close fit and no sheen, preferably good stretch fabric or suede shaft.
* Little to no hardware.

What I've described is not on trend. But since current Aquatalias are way out of budget, shopping past season good anyway. I'm good with the search through clearance/6pm/Amazon/ebay.

I've added the Rhumba Aquatalia in the Finds, although they're long sold out. There's also some Uggs (probably too stiff), and some Trotters that look pretty good. I'm looking at La Canadienne on ebay. I think someone mentioned Blondos, too. Any other ideas? Recommendations for specific ones from a year or two ago?
