Wow, very useful thread. So useful I saved everyone's comments in a file on my laptop. Like delurked, I had learned to distrust the term "curvy" as used by retailers, because so often the jeans are just uniformly wide through waist, hip and thigh. Great to get data from actual wearers who are curvy in the original sense.

Ginger: I forgot to mention paperbag waists as a way to help those of us who are smallest under the ribcage and largest between the pelvis and thigh. Casual pants might substitute for jeans here--I think Gap has some. Wishing your mom happy hunting!

Thank you so much, everyone, for all of the advice! I was passing along store suggestion to my mother as soon as I got them. :D She placed a big order with Talbot's, and I think another with Loft.

Some more info I didn't have at first: She's in a temporary weight gain at the moment, so was searching for something to wear in an interim period. She has at least 6 pair of her favorite jeans in a size smaller (now discontinued, hence why she stocked up). She will definitely get back to that weight, but needs something to wear in the interim. So neither money nor time was something she wanted to invest in this particular size.

Also, FWIW, she's not looking to actually FIT a 25"/40" waist/hip. A lower rise makes fitting much, much easier for her; it just depends on where on the hip slope the waist hits. She's a very old hand at altering pants. In the 80s with true-waist pants, no stretch, she had to buy whatever would fit her hips and tailor the waist in from there. Sometimes she had to put in an extra zipper - in the back seam. Because she could get the waist so it would fit, but then she couldn't get them over her hips. So she's totally capable of altering pants - but really, really, really doesn't want to have to.

Anyway, this should all be taken care of for now! Thank you again for all the suggestions!

I actually like the Old Navy curvy fit... :O They don't all have the same fabric; the ones I have haven't stretched out of shape at all (I have a couple of the "ultra-skinny" that is very stretchy, and two made with a thicker and less stretchy denim). They are so affordable that it wouldn't hurt for her to give it a try when her size is restocked.

I never tried them, but I see the Land's End catalog has curvy fit jeans and pants.

No goo suggestions but sympathizing and would also try Talbots.
The problem with sons " curvy " style is they don't really have as much waist- hip difference as you would think from their description , but are full ("curvy") in the thigh.

Like others, I recommend either Loft or AT curvy cut. They were too pronounced for my 11" waist/hip differential, so they might work for Mom. New York & Co. also has a curvy fit. I do sympathize. Pant fits drive me batty, and even when I think I've found one I like, I find fault with the waist fit after a few wears. Fabrics and cuts with give currently work the best. Unlike others on the forum, I find I really don't like the heavy denim content of COH, for example. I buy Hudson skinnies in stretch fabrics two sizes up and wear a low contrast belt. Track pants are usually a win for their elasticized waist and drape over hips. High waist and pleats are quite flattering--as were the waist yokes of my youth--if designers would ever return to them. Good luck!

My experience is that the waist to hip difference for curvy fit jeans is about 10 inches. I don't think that you will ever find a fifteen inch difference on jeans off the rack. There are some higher end straight leg "jeggings" from brands like JJILL and Lands End which will likely look ok for casual purposes. If you want to go expensive, I think that the websites that offer custom jeans made to order would be smarter than taking an existing pair five inches smaller through the waist.

I wish I had suggestions for your mom. I like curvy fit because the waist fits so much better, but all I could ever find were boot cut jeans. I found some Levis at Kohls that were pretty good, but they were bootcut. I'm going to favorite this thread so I can come back to it later.

I agree that the higher the waist of the jeans, the harder it is to fit a curvier figure. I'm with StyleFan -- I hate NYDJ, they look awful and frumpy on me. Mid-rises are easier. Lucky Brand's Lolita fit may work for her, and they have frequent sales. The Pilcro line at Anthro seems to work well for me also, but I don't have the waist your mom has. She may need to get waists taken in even if she finds a good fit otherwise. Waist alterations are not hard or expensive.

I've been having good success with Talbot's jeans lately. They have a number of styles in their Flawless Five-Pocket line and many come in curvy fit. They're not inexpensive but not in the "designer jean" cost category . . . . around or under $100.

Hope that helps.

This is a request from my mother just now. She's looking for straight leg jeans that will fit a curvy figure. She got desperate enough to even try Old Navy although they stretch out so quickly, but they're totally out of stock of her size.

I'm not really a jeans wearer, but from what I've seen here I suggested Kut and NYDJ (which I think she's tried before). She's tried Gap once and nothing came close to fitting her. I don't think she'd want to try premium denim because of the cost.

She does not like skinnies, and the boot cuts coming back in are tight at the knees. (I kind of agree with this, I've always found that uncomfortable.)

FWIW, she is very fine boned, 5'7", with a very wide pelvis for her build. Her waist is still 25" and her hips probably over 40". She has had to alter jeans all her life and it's so discouraging.
