I was just recently dealing with this-- of course, I am sort of limited to what I can get locally just so I don't have a 4 week turn around to get it repaired if there is a problem.

Still, HP and Lenovo have the best customer service in the industry. Asus has the fewest hardware failures of any PC manufacturer.

That said, I have a 5-year old Dell that has been through 3 years of 4 users (in my family we have the adopt-Elly's-PC program-- and 2 of the users have dropped it multiple times, amongst other things) the only problems are a few dead pixels on the bottom of the screen and the battery should really be replaced. On the other hand, it was a custom-built business PC and a bit sturdier than the consumer models.

I had a gateway for a few years. I never had a problem with it, but it just wasn't durable in the long run and the motherboard died after a little over 3 years.

We also have a Toshiba (one of the newer "entertainment" versions) that has made it a year in a very rough and dirty environment with no problems so far.

Of course, there is Mac which has a great following on its own, but if you are a PC person it is a pain in the butt to learn a new system (or maybe that is just me and my dying brain cells). People rave about them, but my only experience with the laptops has been trying to deal with the problems that crop up with a generation of older mac books that are underpowered for what they are being used for. I haven' t been impressed by the durability so far. As they have aged the actual shells have yellowed and cracked in our harsh, dry climate-- which leads to other problems.

I have had good luck with HPs at both work and home. Toshiba not so much. I have a Toshiba Portege with very poor battery life. Check out cnet.com for Editor's reviews.

I have a Fujitsu siemens . My brother had also positive experience about them. Reliable , drivers available easy on their web-site. Cute/stylish design for not that much money.
My boyfriend replaced his stolen Fujitsu with an Acer 3 years ago. While then it was a frugal decision ( the cheapest within a set of specifications he needed - we are both CS engineers, so we use the laptop pretty intense ) it holds up even now really well. And it was certainly mistreated ( an mySQL server run for 3 months on it, hardware designed apps, etc) and took it in a stride. My dad has also a good experience with a cheap Acer. He uses it only for Internet /word though and is very careful with it.
With HP I've had mixed results ( i had two models at work)

I also have an ASUS that I love. It was one of the recommended computers from two IT friends. I got it at http://www.techbargains.com which was also recommended by one of the IT guys. Computer technology changes so fast that what I bought last year isn't what I would buy now. For every new piece of technology the research starts fresh.

Everything is a compromise. I wanted a desktop replacement so this particular model is bigger than I would want for a computer that you have to carry around all day. On the other hand, I also have a Dell netbook that I can just throw in my purse if I need something mobile but bigger than my phone. Its good enough for what I use it for. Its main selling points are that is cheap, small, and durable--it has taken a lot of abuse.

Wow, I am kind of a gadget geek!

I've got a cheap-y Acer that I've had for at least 4 years with no real problems. I have upgraded the memory and hard drive myself just for extra oomph, and I replaced the fan because it was horribly noisy, but those are actually pretty easy to do yourself.

I think most people have problems that are actually related to the operating system rather than the computer itself. I have installed a Linux OS on this computer in addition to the Windows it came with, and it is amazing how much faster it is when I boot into Linux. YMMV, of course.

I have an ASUS and I love it! I've also heard from several tech support guys at the university that they like ASUS best of the PCs, for what that's worth. My model is 2 years old (the UL30A), weighs 3.5 lbs, and I get up to 12 hours of battery life on it, which was what made the decision for me. I can bring it to campus, and work for a full 8 hours, and then charge it again after I get home - no reason to bring the charger around with me (or leave the charger at school on weekends so that I have to go in and get work done during the day ).

Ultimately, your friend needs to decide what their priorities are (portability, video capabilities, processing, hard drive storage, etc) and use those factors to help them decide what's best! Without that information, it's hard to make much of a recommendation beyond which brands to avoid.

In addition to what bj said, consumer reports can also be helpful sometimes, though they don't have anywhere near a full list of computers available. My all time favorite review site is http://alatest.com/, where you can search for a computer name and get all of the different reviews in one place. Super handy!

Hmm, I've only had a desktop Dell but it worked fine. I have a year and a half old HP laptop that's great, but got knocks on the reviews for short battery life. I'm usually plugged in anyway, so that's not an issue for me BF has a Samsung and it's super pretty but he doesn't do much more than surf Yahoo and eBay and play Zuma blitz on Facebook, so no telling what it's actually capable of LOL.

I heard Dell was coming back somewhat. I had the most wretched experience with Dell a couple of laptops back. Three laptops from two different product lines and all had the same problem straight from the factory (dead spots on screen). It was tremendous hassle over months. I gave up. I also had a out-of-the-factory problem (USB port) with my current HP, but they fixed it lickety split and it's been good since.

I wouldn't buy a COMPACTt for anything. I went through two off them in like 4 years.

I talked to a computer repair guy and he said they see very few DELL so that is what I got this time...so far I like it (it's been just over a year).

Lap tops will never last as long as desk tops though.
