I have a sun precautions hat that I buy every summer. I roll it to pack it. I've taken it everywhere including Hawaii and Europe. I like the tan with black trim.
Here is the link: http://www.sunprecautions.com/product/46500

I found this hat earlier in the summer http://www.wallaroohats.com/p-40-victoria.aspx and promptly bought two- one in tan and the other in blue. My daughter-in-law saw my hats and immediately bought two for herself, then my sister saw them and bought a couple-- you see where this is going. But the hats are so much fun, fit a variety of head shapes/sizes, are well-made, and come in such delicious colors and styles. They also pack like a dream-- I often throw mine into my handbag if I'm going out for the day. I've also added a ribbon headband to my tan hat which I change off to add a bit of variety.

Rute -- What a great hat; looks amazing on you!

Morethanbeige --

You lucky woman! [And congrats on the milestone.]

Unlike Rute I have more than one hat. In fact I have a loose 1 in/1 out policy these days....

I absolutely think one can have stylish "city" hats that give sun protection. I wear mine (almost) daily in the summer, and definitely when out and about for hours at a time.

In fact I just got back from a trip where my packing list looked like yours: hats and comfortable shoes (heels for me) + SPF 70 + BIG sunglasses -- and had no issues despite gorgeous blue skies and 6+ hours of walking/hiking most days.

A few quick things:

* I like to add a scarf around hats to add a bit of fun/color. Plus it's a 2-for-1 travel accessory.

* When packing, I generally take them in my carryon -- I just put one inside the other, turn the lot upside down, fill the hollow and pack softer stuff around them.

* I've had colored straw hats before and think they are awesome and "statements" -- so don't rule those out if you find ones that work with your travel wardrobe.

Now should be a great time of year to snap up hat bargains -- would love to know what you find. For moral support only, of course. ;)

Photo 1: Natural D&Y SPF 50 straw cloche ($10 at Marshalls)

Photo 2: Black Betmar cotton/linen bucket hat -- this fabrication is great for travel (Betmar hats can be spendier, but this one has some awesome detailing you can't see in the photos)

Photo 3: Black San Diego Hat Company broad-brim polyester -- I use and abuse this for beach/exercise and it's totally crushable

Photos 4-5: White hats (broad-brimmed and smaller) on a beach vacation -- can't remember brands and gave smaller hat away

Hubby and I are traveling to Rome to celebrate our 20 year anniversary. I am really excited and am trying to prepare for the trip by putting together some outfits that include comfortable walking shoes (we will walk all over all day) and a sun hat that provides SPF protection. I have fair skin and sun issues. I know for me I must wear sunscreen AND a hat in order to prevent sunburn.

So I have been looking at hats that provide coverage, and want style AND coverage (Is that too much to ask?) Does anybody have any ideas? I am at a loss....
