Great capsule! Love the Blondo boots and the Fitbit band. I have a fake Fitbit that I got to see if I would like it and I do, so I should upgrade to the real thing. A big plus would be all the fun bands on Amazon! I like the Blondo but agree it might be most useful for plane trips and in a chilly house.

perfect NYC capsule....my sisters both live in the city, and we try to do one touristy kind of thing when i visit, but i haven't had the wherewithal to visit the 9/11 memorial and museum.
it's funny, because everytime i wear white jeans in the city (thinking i look fashionable and current), my sisters laugh and remind me that this completely shows the world that i'm "not a New Yorker". well, that and the fact that i have to swipe at least twice to get thru the turnstills on the subway

I had a day and a half, combined, in New York on Sunday-Monday-Tuesday and spent the whole time in the West Village and the Meatpacking District. Did black-navy-olive-white capsule and I was Very Good about comfortable shoes (combat boots and studded flat boots). I did not use my properly dressy olive suede purse even though I brought it, and stuck with my MZ Wallace blue camo nylon hobo. It was 60 degrees this morning in the city, and 30 by the time I drove back to New Hampshire. I don't know what possesses me to drive in and out of Manhattan.

My bobeau equivalent is a white Chan Luu shawl that I wear as a scarf, over pajamas, as a wrap ....

Also, it was relatively warm this past weekend, but the uniform seemed to be the black puffer over leggings and boots look. More faux leopard that I would see in New Hampshire. And New York city is the Only Place I have ever seen people wearing the hoods up on their hoodies. It's weird. I thought they were just for decoration.

laurie, great story about the bobeau wrap. Mine is grey, yours is burgundy, maybe that's part of the difference. I have a black one too that might have also seemed a bit more polished. Hah, love your comment about Newark airport!!

Yes La P the blondos were the only footwear I wore all weekend. Lots of walking. I could have brought sneakers too because there was nothing wet or icy on the ground but I didn't know that before I packed.

Torontogirl...let's see it was 17,222, 17,060,13,251, and 10,608 for the four days. It probably would have been higher if I were better able to keep up with DH who could easily do 20,000 in one day.

Style Fan my only recommendation for March in NYC is to think "warm" because it will be that compared to what you are used to. The last day we were there it hit around 50 and folks were walking around in spring jackets. The "concrete jungle" makes big cities warm, but of course there is also the wind from the skyscrapers. Of course if you have been there before you know all this

Thanks Kerlyn, RachyLou, Cee, fashionsl, suz

Joy I think those two pieces were my favorites too! I also like the grey/black hat, it's a bit bulky but I can pretend I'm channeling Dr Zhivago without actually riding in an open vehicle in the frozen tundra of Russia.

Aquamarine sure I'll post in off topic about what we did. Only scratched the surface of course given the humungous number of things to do in NYC.

Viva I think you are right, I brought that bobeau sweater to use as a robe (although I didn't need one) that could also double as a plane sweater. I didn't plan to wear it otherwise.

Elizabeth P, definitely look into fitbit straps. Amazon is awash with all kinds. The one I got is leather and I think cost $13. I bought it because my original one broke but I like this one a WHOLE lot better because it looks more like a real watch band than plastic techno gear.

Oh, and thanks for the link to the fitbit straps :) I bought the silver metal one, which I love, but an inexpensive leather one would be nice too, maybe in black. Much nicer than the rubber it comes with.

You had me at "successful travel capsule"! I'm traveling right now and hoping to end up with a similar post. :)

I found Laurie's comment interesting and wonder if that Bobeau wrap is really a travel piece and not a destination piece? I'm trying to use one piece for both now, and I'm not sure it is working well. I think there may be some real value in having comfy pieces just for the plane.

Anyway, thanks for posting and congrats on such a great trip!

Great capsule for the Big Apple in winter! Care to share what else you did and where you ate? (Maybe in off topic?) Also thinking of a weekend getaway there in the next month or so and open to ideas. It’s been a while since I’ve been. The 9/11 memorial is at the top of the list. I think I’m ready now to see it.

Chris,
Great capsule and trip report. I love NYC so much.

Re the Bobeau wrap- I have 2 colors, and often take them on flights. A few months ago, a very well dressed woman standing in line to board a flight complimented me on my burgundy wrap, and asked me all of the details about where she could get one. I took it off so she could take a photo of the tag. I think it's a great piece for travel, and definitely not too leisure for your capsule from what I can see, but it's all about how you feel in it of course. (Besides, in the Newark airport it would have been considered fine evening wear!)

Emily K you are right that it's hard to imagine the oculus without seeing it.

MsMary yes it is a great place to visit! That puffer vest has turned out to be one of the best purchases ever! Because it has a fitted waist it can almost look "dressy" when styled properly.

Thanks Angie, and saluting you ("yis ciptain" per Chekov on Star Trek) on my continued education into what makes for loungewear not to be worn except for true lounging at home And yes it was great that my feet were happy. Other parts of my legs were tired from all the walking on hard surfaces but that's no big deal.

Toban I think the nylon fabric is what makes that bag feel sporty to me, plus as you suggest the webbed strap. Less sporty would be something in leather or faux leather. Like the burgundy cross body shown below. I guess the differences can be quite subtle.

Thanks for sharing your lovely capsule and your trip details. I especially like your orange bag! It doesn't read that sporty to me, I guess it's the more casual web strap?

FABULOUS capsule, and I'm pleased it worked, Chris. Onto finding less sporty bags, and no more leisure "lounge" wear worn as regular casual wear for you, young lady.

Really pleased your feet were happy most of all.

I have been super busy and not around the forum much lately, but thought I’d pop in with a report on a travel capsule I used this past weekend for 4 days in NYC. My goals were to learn from some past travel capsule mistakes including not being warm enough, not having happy feet, and feeling too casual. I was very pleased with the outcome. I also had a great time, what a great city!

I wore my warmest coat, which is a black puffer. I added a white plaid muffler, a black knit hat, gloves, and on the first two days wore a light puffer vest underneath and was NOT too warm. Parts of NYC have a lot of wind (skyscraper effect) and the first day was in the high 20’s and felt quite frigid but I was fine. I fit right into the black puffer epidemic (a phrase coined by April). I wore my new Blondo boots and my feet were very warm and comfortable, although I could have been ok with sneakers since there was no rain, snow, or ice anywhere.

I brought 2 pairs of jeans, 1 black slacks, 3 pullover sweaters, a faux leather jacket, 1 cardigan, a puffer vest, some underlayers, and 2 “fashion” scarves. I brought a bit more than bare minimum because I felt like it, and wore most of it. The only piece that was not great was the grey bobeau cardigan, which I wore on the flight home. I’ve been on the fence about whether this style feels bit too much like leisure wear….and now I’m convinced that it DOES. I felt a little less polished that I would have liked, but in the Newark airport that hardly made me a standout. I used my black nylon Baggallini hobo bag daily which was perfect although maybe someday I’ll upgrade to something a little less sporty. Same for my backpack and smaller orange Baggallini I stuffed into it as my carryon bag. The only pieces I did not wear were the reiker boots, the black slacks, and the pink/grey scarf. Not a problem at all, just didn’t feel like wearing them

Overall I did not feel too casual, because my jeans were dark and slim, and I had enough variety in tops to work well. I also think NYC is a fairly casual city, at least from what I could see.

We did a lot of walking around, constantly looking up! So much to see and do, especially since DH and I had not been there as tourists in a couple of decades. We had both made business trips there but you just don't to see as much that way. I think the highlight of the trip for me was the 9/11 memorial and museum. They have done a terrific job of building a place to remember and reflect on that horrible day. The reflecting pools are just perfect. The museum lower floors are where the lowest floors of the WTC complex were, so you can see bits of the original construction. The “oculus” which is an underground mall and commuter train station built to replace what was below the twin towers, is very modern all in white marble, something people probably love or hate. I thought it was great, especially standing up on a balcony looking down at all the black-clad new yorkers rushing around against the white floors and walls. And they do rush!
