@Brooklyn yes I think my problem is that I already mix colours a lot, so too much metal mixing can get a little complicated. I like the colours of your top, but my instinct would always be to wear something like that with silver or white jewellery. I like what you mentioned about the bag - I actually have metallic flats (one silver & one gold), so maybe I should try wearing those with different metals first? I might ease into it by mixing my belt buckle/ bag hardware & metallic shoes for now, lol!

I don’t have many mixed metal pieces but I will happily wear a mixture of metals (unlike colours, where I am not a happy mixer at all). In this pic (which I will post next week as part of the 30 x 30 challenge). I am wearing a silver and tan cuff, silver rings (including a bronze and silver ring), bronze pendant, rose gold and black beads and a tan bag with yellow gold hardware. If you look at my wedding ring finger, I wear a silver band and a white enamel and silver band next to my yellow gold wedding band, so that the yellow gold of the wedding band does not boss me around too much. To my eye the repetition of tan, bronze and black in the jewellery and the outfit here helps to tie everything together, so I was happy with it. But these things are always personal.
FWIW, I think rose gold and silver layer together really well, so that may be a good place to start if you are experimenting.

@Laura1975 that's a good idea, using a mixed metal piece as a bridging piece to
bring together other pieces. Like @Style Fan I don't like to be too matchy matchy, but I still like cohesion, which is probably why I struggle with getting mixed metals right in the right place. They throw me for a loop because, whilst I wear different colours in one outfit, they're often of the same strength or saturation levels. So of course shiny metallic jewellery of different colours can make the outfit more difficult to keep cohesive. So unlike @MaineLady I need to be careful about the colours of my hardware, otherwise it goes from looking deliberate to a mess, lol. I like @Janet's idea of keeping one piece as the bigger accent.

@SarahD8 I like how the metals come together to give it a burnished effect! Gives it a nice antique feel

@Aurore Oh I like the shoes! I can see how they would be an effective bridging piece for a formal event, whilst adding a little interest. I like the colours of the examples you've given - the bright gold (but not really pure yellow gold - what would you call it? Shiny gold?) works well with the shiny silver. I'm not a huge Pandora fan (the pieces are too girly for my tastes) but I like the angel (I like clever use of colours, like gold for the hair etc).

Zaeobi here are two of mine:

1. I think this works because both pieces are of a similar era (in fact, the original owner of the signet ring probably purchased the agate ring too) and the agate has a bit of a yellow cast to it.

2. I think the brushed finish of the beads here helps tone down each metal and makes them play better together.

I really like Aurore's shoe example, above. Using those shoes in an outfit would make me feel comfortable about including, for example, a bag with gold hardware and a belt with a silver buckle--I would not do that, probably, unless I had a "blender" piece like the shoes.

I have several pieces with mixed metals. When wearing mixed metals, I am not concerned about the color of hardware on clothing or handbags.

I mix yellow gold and platinum/ silver all the time. One thing that has helped me is this Fossil watch. It means I can wear my platinum wedding/engagement rings with other gold jewellery and it looks deliberate rather than an afterthought.

I have several mixed metal pieces. I have some in my finds. The two cuffs are sterling silver with gold and the larger one has rose gold as well. I have matching earrings for the smaller cuff but I do not wear them together because that is too matchy matchy for me.
One of my wedding rings from my first marriage (I have 3) is yellow gold and rose gold. It is difficult to photograph because it is 3 bands that come together like a puzzle (sort of like a Cartier ring).
I have a sterling silver ring with a gold inlay.
A few of my watches are stainless steel with gold.
Okay I will stop now but I have more.

I think mixing metals is made easier by tying them together with something like a mixed metal watch (I like the simplicity of the one here). I’m really picky about mixed metal items, but I do sometimes mix metals — for example, a gold ring with a stone, but maybe small silver earrings. When I mix metals, I tend to keep one of the choices smaller and simpler, if that makes sense.

I used to find mixed silver/gold jewelry pieces outdated, but it seems like there are more and more modern-looking, classy ones I fall in love with.

My favourite jewelry brands are Swarovski and Pandora, and they both feature such pieces.
I also own and love a mixed metal fairy necklace.

These are only small touches of mixed metal though, I'm waiting forward to other answers with bolder examples!

Edit: I just stumbled upon mixed metal heeled sandals (4th photo)...I think their design is simple enough to be paired with a plain dress without looking "too much". In my opinion, still a special occasion outfit though.

Having read Angie's post, I was thinking back to all of the mixed metal looks I've seen & I realised something - I've only ever seen it done with mid- & cool-toned metals, such as pewter, gunmetal & bronze (see photo). Whilst there's nothing wrong with these, I find the look too edgy & not high contrast enough for my style (I like to wear saturated colours, but not too bright). I also have neutral undertones & could do with some warmth from warmer metals, lol! So my question is two-fold:

1) Is there such a thing as mixing yellow gold with sterling silver or white gold (for example), or is that too much?

2) Do any of you have any examples of successful metal mixing in an outfit (whatever your undertones), & wouldn't mind sharing what you thinks makes them look successful? I think some visual examples may really help me be more sold on this idea.

Many thanks!
