Timely post. I have some 'boot-cut' jeans on my dresser right now for donation because of this very thing. The flare is a bit too flared (I'm also a petite), and I feel like Shaggy (see pic). But they are super comfy-the waist is perfect.
I never even considered having them 'straightened.' I need to find a good tailor (I have someone who hems; I trust him to do what I say, but I don't trust his creative judgement).

I've done this with several pairs recently and loved the results. I did it myself even though I'm not great at sewing. I sewed them and then tried them on again before cutting the excess fabric. I figured if I didn't like the result I could always pick the stitches out and try again.

What a great idea! I have several pairs of flares that I haven't worn for several years and I've been debating what to do with them. Going to have to take them out and see if this would work. Thanks for sharing!

It's a great idea isn't it. Glad they worked out. I did this myself to a pair of boot-cuts a couple of months back and I love them now. Also, when I was looking in the sales the other day I was after another pair of straight leg white jeans. All that was left was a pair of flares and I bought them fully intending to taper them. I figured at less than half price it was worth the effort,

Can you post pics of the "new" jeans?

I've seen tutorials on how to do it, but I'm not sure I'd be brave enough try it.

As a petite, I am a regular customer at the tailor's. I've had all kinds of small alterations done to make my clothes fit correctly. But this week I tried something different, and I wasn't sure if it was going to work -- but it totally did, so I thought I'd share. I had this pair of flare jeans in a wash I really like and that fit perfectly on the waist and seat, but that I had not worn in over a year. They used to be favourites, but it seems that I don't really wear flares anymore. I was thinking about donating them, and then thought, what if I got my tailor to turn them into straight-leg jeans? Anyway, I got them back yesterday, and hey presto! They are perfect!

Something to keep in mind if you have a pair of flares you no longer wear. Bonus points if you can do it yourself. Sometimes I wish I could sew...
