That is so sweet Shiny. What a great day.
I took my Grand Daughter shopping also and it was a great bonding experience.
You're such a good Mom.
Kyle I'm so sorry to hear that your Mom died when you were 17.

Shiny...a heartfelt thank you for this post. Some of my fondest memories are shopping with my mom...going to lunch at a girly crepe restaurant...buying makeup and school clothes...going to the hairdresser. She died when I was 17, so that makes these teen memories all the more meaningful.

That was beautiful what you described Shiny! I can totally imagine how happy both of you are at the end of the day. I have a very close relationship with my daughter who is 10 now, I hope that we'll be like you when she is 15.

Yay! I'm so glad to hear that you had success in many facets with your daughter. Girls are such complicated creatures...I applaud you for recognizing the need to do something to make her feel special. It's definitely motivational and inspirational for me.

You are an awesome mom, and when those Joe jeans are long gone, she will always remember how much fun she had and how special you made her feel.

My husband and I always say that spending time with our kids, and being interested and involved in their activities is like putting money in the bank. We invest in our careers, our homes, our wardrobes, our retirement accounts and college funds. Investing in our kids is no different. Kudos to you!

Oh, Shiny, how wonderful! If I had girls, I would file this away for something to remember later. It's a great thing to hear about and I'm so glad you had a nice time and she had such a great confidence building day for her! I am so glad she found jeans that will work for her and that she was able to ignore the number in the label. Congrats on such a successful shopping outing!

Like Tanya, I have no advice to offer on the tailor question, but I just had to tell you what a great job you are doing with your girls!

Wow Shiny, this is so sweet! My eyes teared as I was reading this. I am so glad you daughter found great jeans and got a gorgeous haircut! The detail about holding your hand was soo cute! You are such an amazing mother, I hope I can be like you one day.

I have no experience with the tailor/sleeve thing, so I can not say anything about that.

What a great day you have had!

We had a very successful "mother/daughter" day today!

DD15 found herself three pairs of jeans:

- grey Joe's Muse's bootcut
- Joe's Honey's - straight leg in medium wash with some fading and funky pockets
- Joe's Cigarette - ultra dark wash, no fading - and ultra, ultra skinny

I have to thank all of you who suggested Joe's - you were exactly right. This is definetly "her" brand. She tried on Paige and Citizens as well, but those just didn't work. The Joe's are nearly perfect - she will still need some tailoring to take them in just a pinch in the waist - she's got such a tiny waist!

She completely ignored the size on the label and only focused on how cute her butt look. ;-)

The owner of the store helped us out, and he was great. I really have to put in another plug for National Jean Company: excellent service at that place. They know their jeans. If you are at all intimidated about trying on premiums, this is the place to go. It's like having Stacey and Clinton help you shop.

They do have an online site, can't vouch for it, but if you have a NJC near you, it's worth it. We need to wash the jeans and dry them and then go back in and they do the tailoring and any hemming req'd for a nominal fee. (I think only the grey jeans will need hemming - the other two are scrunchable length).

Next we made a quick stop at a local tailor shop, and I just quickly asked for general idea of how much they'd charge to shorten the sleeves on the Paris jacket (while retaining the trim) and the coat. The tailor was nice, said it's hard to say without seeing the pieces, but yes the trim can definetly be retained. I didn't have the items with me, so his ballpark guess was $45. Does that sound right? Should I shop around more?

Next we had a quick lunch. DD was holding my hand as we walked to the restaurant. At the restaurant were some kids she knows from school. She didn't drop my hand or anything.... she squeezed it tighter, smiled and said, "I'd love to stop and chat, but my mom and I are on a date!" and whisked right by them. It was so sweet. :-)

After lunch she had her hair cut at my new salon. I just knew she'd like my new hairdresser: he has the same aesthetic as she has. This time we just went safe with some shaping and trimming but the two talked at length about things she might experiment with in the future.... like adding in some pink or purple highlights... or going dramatically shorter and doing something euro-punk.

He told her she had incredible bone structure, beautiful hair, gorgeous eyes and nose.... and basically she could do ANYTHING with her hair - limitless possibilities. He told her she was very very lucky because most people can't do that.

She was flying high afterwards - grinning ear to ear and saying, "Mom, that was sooo cool!! He 'gets' me! He's my new hairdresser from now on... "

I like this idea of "dating" my own daughters... so now I need to plan a similar day out with DD14!!
