Thanks, Celia and Isabel!

That's interesting about red tones going away first. It's kind of funny, because I did have some natural red highlights when I was younger, and I think I still mentally "see" my hair as having them to some extent.

Your hair looks just beautiful!
A stylist told me that the red tones are what we lose first as hair grays, so it makes sense to me that trying to reinsert them would look unnatural and conflict with a changing skin tone too.

Beautiful. I think you made the right choice but also think a cooler toned highlight would work for you. It takes a good stylist to get a cool tone with dark brown hair and it can end up being too coppery. I have medium brown hair and look very washed out if the highlights or color are too warm.

Your stylist did an excellent job.

I feel kind of guilty for posting and running without really acknowledging everyone's lovely advice and comments. Since it was a day off, my husband and I ended up spending the rest of the day once I was done with my appointment wandering around, eating, going to a museum, and eating some more, and I didn't really have time to check in until now.

Ended up getting brown highlights that match my regular color, only one shade lighter, so it just blends in and makes everything look a little richer without adding another color. Not a huge change, but I'm enjoying how I look more vibrant and less worn-out, a little like someone bumped the saturation knob up on an image editing program or something. And here's a pic!

The jury's still out on whether I make this a regular upkeep "thing" (i.e., whether I can get over my utter laziness when it comes to beauty maintenance enough to keep doing it) or go a little bit more experimental on color (like with PURPLE!), but I'm definitely liking it so far.

Ceit, your hair always looks really good, and definitely natural-looking! I like the idea of henna, but suspect it might be above my very low threshold for not messing up DIY beauty things.

Carter, that's interesting about the auburn not feeling right with your skin tone. I feel like we might have similar coloring, so I wonder if that would happen with me too.

Joy and Tulle, aubergine might be fun if I try to go a little bolder next time. And it certainly would be appropriate -- kind of like a hair inside joke. On that note, Diana, I hadn't realized you had purple highlights in your hair (which I've always thought is gorgeous). I would have guessed you maybe had some red in there? But knowing that is purple, and seeing how rich and interesting it looks on dark hair without being obviously a non-traditional color, makes that really something to think about for next time.

Jeweled, I definitely think hair in transition to gray can look great. (And there are certainly ladies on the forum providing lovely evidence of that!) In my case, though, I feel like the deck's stacked a little against me because I'm really short, not thin or toned, and not sleek or polished. So I've been kind of ambivalent about adding "has clearly graying hair" to that list of attributes at this point in my life (I'm 37) if I can avoid it. Instead of reading as an intentional and deliberate style choice, like it might on someone else, I was afraid that having noticeable gray just looked sloppy on me. Also, and probably equally superficially, I've always looked young for my age and, after years and years of being frustrated by that, it seemed a shame to have my hair interfere with that now that I'm an age where that's a more positive thing.

And that's a good point about the awkward grow-out if I decide to change my mind about keeping up with highlights. Definitely worth keeping in mind. Although, since I usually wear my hair either curly or pulled back, the line between highlighted hair and roots would hopefully be a little less obvious than they might be on someone who wears their hair down and straight.

Angie, wow, that's surprising! All this time I just assumed I was warm-toned. I think because of the brown eyes and the fact that my skin's not particularly "pink." That does make sense in terms of why I've always been drawn to jewel tones, though. Will have to think about this some more.

My hair is black, not brown but you'll probably get a similar result, if maybe a bit brighter.

First, make sure you specify NO bleach. I think some lighter colors come with bleach in them, and the stylist will also know which colors won't work without bleaching.

I have done both red and purple, and like both. These days I am going with purple because I like the cooler tone and it doesn't fade out like the red did. (On me it would turn cognac, which was interesting but very warm toned.). i found with red I was wearing more autumn colors whereas with purple I wear more winter colors, if that helps.

Purple comes out like dark, cool burgundy on me. I could see that looking really good on you!

Eta photos. The first one is straight from the salon so it's quite bright. Both are taken outdoors. In indoor light it's less bright and cooler. In fluorescent light it looks almost black.

Hi Aubergine, another option is to embrace the silver hair as it comes in. A lot of ladies are doing that these days, with beautiful results throughout the transition to gray.

Several years ago hair stylist convinced me to have blond highlights to hide the gray that was starting to show up in my dark brown hair. I stuck with her highlights advice for years - until I realized those highlights were much less flattering than my natural salt-and-pepper hair. And that as I became more gray, the highlights couldn't keep up with covering it, as Carter mentioned.

Then that meant an awkward transition of growing out the highlights I didn't want anymore, in order to embrace the natural silver instead.

All that is to say - silver can be beautiful natural highlights in your dark hair - and that if you change your mind about salon highlights or other coloring, growing it out can take a long time.

Had a post, but it got lost!

I actually am at the salon now and the plan is to just do highlights in brown one shade lighter than my natural color. Which is actually the same color as it gets at the ends where the sun hits it. So not a big change at all!

And, Angie, I always kind of thought of myself as being warm toned. But maybe I got that wrong? It's olive, I guess, which could maybe lean either way,

Are you sure that warm highlights are best for your cool toned skin? I'd have another word with your hairstylist. Perhaps burgundy might be better.

All I do is all-over henna at home. I have brown hair, and the henna makes the white hairs dark copper coloured, and adds a dark auburn to the rest of my hair. It's super easy, not too messy and cheap!

I have had several people compliment me on my "highlights". It looks pretty natural, I think.

I've done auburn highlights before. I loved the way they looked in my hair, but then I felt that my skin didn't quite look right with the new hair. YMMV. I ended up doing lighter brown highlights for years as the gray was trickling in. Now, I need a tad more than highlights can deliver;-)

Hi everyone! I know I haven't been posting much lately, so I feel bad jumping in randomly with a question, but nevertheless here I am.

I have a hair appointment in a few hours and I'm planning on getting my hair highlighted -- the first time I've ever done any kind of coloring. Basically, I'm getting some noticeable grays and would kind of like them to be, you know, less noticeable. I talked about it with the stylist the last time I was in for a cut and my plan is for subtle reddish highlights that will blend into my dark brown hair, since that will require less upkeep than just trying to replicate my natural hair color exactly, and also seems a bit more fun. I do want to keep things very subtle and natural, though.

Does anyone have any advice on this process? Suggestions for things I should tell the stylist? And, yeah, maybe I should have posted this earlier than literally the morning of the appointment, but planning has never been my strong suit.

Recent-ish picture of me with a close-up of my hair is here.

Hope everyone is doing well and happy 4th of July to those in the U.S.!
