I just bought these - http://www.zappos.com/dkny-sally - in gunmetal, and the sneaker soles are pretty damn great. Surprisingly comfortable - try 'em on in a store?

I took my ecco 1" heel black ankle boots and wore them all the time in Paris. I also took a nice walking sandal by Nurture. Clarks, Born, Hush Puppy, Merrill, Dansko the list goes on as there are so many companies that make great shoes that look good and can feel good on the foot. The main thing I did was purchase well ahead of time and wear them a lot before I went to France so that I knew they were broken in and would be super comfy.

My husband and i love to walk in towns, and will often walk 6-9 miles in a typical weekend. For me, the most important priority is support - i need a strong, stable shoe with a 'sticky' sole. Padding and arch support don't make such a difference to me, in fact too much padding aggravates my feet.

That said, i've had great luck with Clark's Artisan line as well as Aerosoles sandals. I have 2 pair of Aerosoles - here's some similar:
http://www.aerosoles.com/eng/product/avenue/avenue
http://www.aerosoles.com/eng/p.....e/faximize
http://www.aerosoles.com/eng/p...../gin-ricke

my Clarks are double strapped Mary Janes with a 3" heel, i regularly walk 4-5 miles in them. Very similar to these:
http://www.zappos.com/clarks-m.....wn-leather

Clarks has an enormous variety of styles, worth checking out.

Do Not Forget The Moleskin! You can use it to take the pressure off blisters (as here: http://dashingeccentric.blogsp.....eskin.html ). You can also put it on the shoes, with the fuzzy part facing your foot, if a spot is rubbing and causing trouble.

Have a great day! steph

Thanks so much everyone - I have a lot of good options to check out now, really appreciate the feedback. I'd forgotten about Hush Puppies, haven't worn those in a really long time, but they are known for comfort too aren't they? Also - the Cole Haan and Sperry loafer idea sounds good too.

I'll look up the Ziera/Kumfs as well. Haven't heard of these, but they sound good!

Thanks again

I've heard good things about Merrell's line of more business-y shoes. I have a pair of flats that I have just about worn out from walking all over the place in them. Not the dressiest things but I haven't had any foot issues when wearing them.

I have walked for whole days from 8am to 8pm in these Hush Puppies: http://www.hushpuppies.com/US/.....mensions=0
and these: http://www.hushpuppies.com/US/.....mensions=0

Even their heels are comfortable for hours, so I'm keeping my out for these: http://www.hushpuppies.com/US/.....mensions=0
Versatile for travelling and I prefer a bit of heel, but there's more styles here: http://www.hushpuppies.com/US/en/Womens-Casuals

They will need rainproofing, very likely, but well worth it. Because they do wear well. I've stomped around in a couple of older ones for well over four years now, and our roads are NOT kind to footwear.

I wore 2 pairs of shoes from Ziera (sometimes called Kumfs) and I walked Europe for 6 weeks touring, and work (had to walk to work, and stand and teach). I had some slip on patent leather loafers so they were fine for touring round (walking viking pilgram trails on weekends, Paris etc etc) and then very low heeled ankle boots (like i inch) which were a bit dressy for more formal occassions but also handled walking. I believe there are a few places in the USA that sell them. Actually I have almost all Zieras and they are pretty spot for support, the cushy soles etc. And they go up to about size 43/44 European and have different widths if you need them... Hope you get to go on your trip!

For winter travel, I wear boots: Both my Frye ankle boots and Fluevog tall boots have passed the hours of sightseeing test.

For summer travel, I have a pair of flat Sofft gladiators, but I haven't had the opportunity to wear those for more than 4 hours at a time.

I've worn heeled Mary Jane shoes for 8 hours of sightseeing, but that wouldn't work for multiple days in a row. The two key things that make a difference for me are going as flat as possible while still having a substantial, cushioning, supportive sole.

I think ankle boots just might be what you're looking for.

If you like loafers, I recently tried on some Sperry and Cole Hahn loafers that were super comfortable. The Sperry ones had a lug sole that was so cushy you wouldn't even feel the coblestones! From what Kirti says, loafers are super popular in France, so you wouldn't look like a tourist in them!

My Dansko Buffy booties are almost as comfortable as my Dansko Pros which is saying a lot and are great if you need/want a lot of arch support. BarkingDogShoes.com blogged on walking shoes last year and has a lot of reviews where she discusses padding, arch support, and various fussy feet concern.

Wow - I'm impressed, as I wouldn't have even thought of booties, but they sound like they just might be perfect for such a trip. Also liking the idea of a pair of good Mary Jane style flats too - this is exactly what I'm after - something that is comfortable, but where I can still get away with wearing them for slightly more dressed up occasions.

Thanks!

I like Missvee's suggestion, and I'd like to add one. I'm also very 'walking-conscious' because I've never gotten my driver's license and have to get around by foot, bike, and transit. This is a bit weird, but one of the best pairs of shoes I've ever had for tramping around (on concrete) for days at a time is a pair of mens booties--all leather, with double zips, and comfortable as heck. They are basically ankle-height boots with zips on either side of the ankle, in extraordinarily soft, dark brown burnished leather. I love them. I've worn them with skirts and tights, with jeans, and with dress pants. The brand I have is Pantanetti.

The other pair of shoes that completely rocked my walking world (and stood up to the test of tramping all over Europe with a backpack was a pair of dark red leather, flat Mary Janes by La Scarpa--again a pair of shoes that I wore with skirts, jeans, dress pants, dresses and so forth. I was 20 when I bought them in 2004, and they didn't look 'grandmotherly' at all...I'd imagine that Clarks might have something similar?

Best of luck and have a great trip!

Thank you missvee - I will definitely look for some Rieker boots and try them on. The trip we're considering involves Venice, Greece, Turkey - but even so, some cute ankle boots might look really nice with mild weather outfits, just the same.

I traipsed around Ireland this past September and wore flat ankle-length boots pretty much every day. They were comfortable, water-resistant, and looked good with jeans, pants, and skirts (with tights). Mine were by Rieker - surprisingly good quality and not overly expensive.

I *might* be going to Europe this fall - and while I still haven't replaced my wrecked luggage (that will be next), I'm now wondering about decent shoes. My husband and I *love* to walk ...for hours and hours, and if we decide to go ahead with this potential trip - I'm going to need good shoes.

These days, I have some reasonably good shoes for the most part - but they are 2-3 hour walking shoes, not necessarily good for 6+ hours of tromping around. The last few trips we took where we walked absolutely everywhere, for 6-8 hours per day, I didn't care about style at all...I had good walking shoes (not runners, but 'good' loafer-style shoes). Those are long gone.

The situation now is that I don't currently have any shoes that I'd feel good walking around all day long in...not the way we like to walk. I have good running shoes, but I really don't feel like wearing those on a trip to Europe.

This is asking way early - but if it takes me a few tries to find the right shoes, I'd rather get that sorted out sooner, rather than later.

If you were going to walk for 6+ hours per day, and you still wanted stylish looking shoes, what shoes would you wear? Walking umpteen kilometres/miles per day, but you're in some fab city and would like to wear something reasonably stylish - what would you choose?
