Such treasures in your closet!-) The first one really fits your style, Nancy. It also reminds me a little of the blue work jackets Bill Cunningham sports (not the same style of jacket, but the same vibe). I like all the suggestions above, and I think both kimonos would look fab with lots of white (and silver or another metallic) mixed into the outfit too.

I looked on Pinterest for some inspiration photos, just in general, but perhaps it can spark more specific styling ideas too.

- a patterned (floral, plaid, stripes, dots...) pant with the long jacket
http://alltheprettybirds.blogs.....s-van.html

- white top, BF jeans and some kind of heel (I know this is a maternity style photo, but it's the concept behind it, right;-)
http://pinterest.com/pin/194428908884328189/

- cropped twill pants, utility style pants (I like the idea of dressy track pants here too) and a great (wedge) heel
http://pinterest.com/pin/15410823694688856/

- perhaps use a "reverse tonal colour palette" for your black kimono (unbelted), i.e. bright reds, cobalt blues, greens... underneath?
http://pinterest.com/pin/444800900666636001/

- sheath or tailored dress + statement necklace
http://pinterest.com/pin/275704808409716977/

- with straight leg jeans or skinnies and Converse for a sporty look (layering under a blazer or jacket will be harder I expect because your kimono has wide sleeves)
http://pinterest.com/pin/234398355576260900/

- dressy track pants or zippered skinnies + metallic (or patterned) slipper flats, clutch, and sleek cuff bracelet
http://pinterest.com/pin/120119515031882176/

- worn open as a lightweight coat with white jeans and flats + red bag (or your new orange bag:-)
http://pinterest.com/pin/105905028708755206/

- simple with jeans, white top and bright-coloured pumps
http://pinterest.com/pin/253609022736082978/

- a spot of pattern mixing
http://pinterest.com/pin/112378953171543734/

- statement necklace, slim fitting pants + a great high-vamp metallic sandal or wedge
http://pinterest.com/pin/438960294900139344/

- white top + white bottoms
http://pinterest.com/pin/255016397622528834/

- the shorter kimono tucked into moto style jeans
http://pinterest.com/pin/213850682278728548/
I love that you kept your vintage kimono jackets, Nancy-San!

Let's work with the first one first because it's a better shape and length for your body type. The elements of the outfit are there - but we need to freshen up the palette. Lets do faded denim, white layering piece, red heels and a very modern bag. You also might need to cut off those little belly ties - if that's okay with you.

I'm excited about your outfit!
Oh, wow! These are great!! So glad you held onto them.

I think the first one should definitely work with skinnies. With white ones it would be amazing! But it would work with blue, too. I could even see it with a pencil skirt. It looks really good on you!

The shape and relative stiffness of the happi remind me of mine (even though mine is in a dressier fabric).

The second one is extraordinary and I love Mary's suggestions for styling. Again, you might wear it open over a pencil or sheath, too, as Angie suggests. In that case, it would be drapey.

I was so excited to see this morning's post by Angie. She has some truly brilliant ideas for this challenging piece. And I've had these two kimonos in my closets for decades as we've moved from house to house. Of course, even though they were difficult to wear, I could never give them away. They're both authentic vintage kimonos I bought in my early twenties.

The short one is technically called a happi. I think it would have been worn by a merchant. Not sure how old it is, but probably at least six or more decades, though it's made of very resilient cotton and is in excellent condition.

I'm not sure if it's the most flattering length or if in general a short-waisted, busty apple should be wearing something like this, so let me know your thoughts. Kimono are really ideal for the typical shape of a Japanese woman--slender and slight and not big in the chest. That said, though I have not worn it in years, if it's coming back, I think I might try some of Angie's suggestions.

The second is a bonus piece It's a true vintage kimono...though I'm not sure why it's not floor-length. Will need to ask hubs later. It's probably close to a hundred years old, made of delicate silk. It's beautiful and I wore it as a 19-year-old to my brother's bar mitzvah with black tights and a wide red obi-like belt. Since then, nada. Here it looks like a bathrobe, really not well styled and just thrown on for the pic. I have no idea what to do with it or whether to even keep it (but again, cannot give away). Maybe with more weight loss and a better-defined waist it will look more appropriate. It's also much more fragile than the other piece. It kind of looks like a judge's robe here, but I assure you it's a gorgeous understated garment.

Anyway, thanks and arigato, Angie-san! Your suggestions are great and I hope to see this look out on the streets.
