Two words...Burgundy bootie. Fun sweater and it looks good with the black pants but it feels too heavy for sandals.

It's not an underlayer - it's all one piece :)

Thanks for all the advice - I'll try it more as the weather cools off!

Great suggestions already and the orange does look great on you but,,,,, is that part sewn in? It may blend more with a darker black or brown under layer, not that it needs to I'm just color- phobic. If that's a word.

I think it looks fine with the black pants but I'd swap out the sandals for some tough boots. Slouchy black pants, jeans of any ilk except maybe skinny, rich brown pants, how about a brown suede skirt?

I really like the orange on you also. How about a straight front shot? And what is wrong with start trek anyway

I'm just noticing how your skin comes alive with that orange! Look at the peaches in your cheeks. The sweater would be fun with a pencil skirt and pumps, but I'm missing the Star Trek reference. Isn't that a stylized bow in the front side?

Thank you so much for the suggestions! I didn't like the black bottoms with the sweater. This gives me many more options to try.

Maybe cobalt bottoms, light gray jeans, pink cargo pants, or olive.

And I have an aqua gingham buttondown that might have to be tried with this. In my mind it's gross - but you never know until you try :)

If I owned this sweater, I would try to mix it up a little, just to take some of the bossiness off of it. Like wearing blue faded or dark blue denim jeans...or light grey pants. Maybe with a small- or mid-scale plaid or gingham shirt under it. In other words, I wouldn't let the sweater steal the whole show and I would not wear black bottoms with it. Since I am a redhead, you can take or leave my ideas but they are just my thoughts about what I would do with it.

It's an interesting piece and I'd agree with with Rachylou that I'd stay away from anything steamlined, Star Trek-ish.

If you want to pair the top with pants, maybe try for a straight-leg look instead of a skinny-leg. Angie has pinned several pics of higher-waisted, more fluid pants worn with short tops looks for this fall and for Spring 2014 which might be worth trying.

I'd also experiment with non-black bottoms to keep the Star Trek vibe under control. This blog http://www.brandigirlblog.com/ is one of my favorite places to check out possible colour combinations. The author's colour palettes are so inspirational and she does a good job of explaining colour theory to novices like myself.

Hmm. Definitely a cool sweater. I think I'd think hipster again, and not Star Trek streamlined (i.e., either modern or ultra modern classic). I frankly, would try it with a plaid button down (light cotton, not oxford cloth or flannel or anything).

I picked up this statement sweater, and now I'm stumped on styling it. Also, it's shorter than I realized when I bought it - does it need to be reserved for wear with skirts?

What do you think? Is the sweater worth keeping, and how should I style it? Here's it's just with simple black pants, because I couldn't come up with anything else.

The colors are orange and black - the mid-tone section is kind of a heathered orange and black together.
