Thanks Firecracker! You made my day :)

La Belle: i've owned bootcut leggings of shorts and never wore them for some reason... going to have to go back and perhaps re-invest in a pair!

Lauren, your explanation makes perfect sense to me. I do love the look you posted on your blog. You look fantastic in the leggings (or skinny-pants) outfits.
Lauren, I love your look! I wear leggings frequently, because I can peel off a jacket or a thin top layer, put on some dance shoes, and rehearse or take class.

I have a few ways I wear them - the main way is the way Lauren wears them in her photo - over the knee boots, jacket, cadet cap, etc. I love an equestrian, or military look - or something that evokes a man's costume in a film or ballet, such as Valmont, or the Russian dancers in Nutcracker.

I also wear them with heels and a sleek, fitted jacket - and I usually will reference photos of Wolford's 2011 and 2012 lookbooks online - Spring/ Summer and Fall/Winter. It's a fun alternative look for drinks and dinner out with friends, or if I'm going to a casual show or concert. I always get compliments on this look.

I like to reference ninistyle.net, she does some really fun stuff with leggings.

In warmer weather, I will put on a couple of thin layers of tops: camis from Forever 21 (shockingly, these last for years), and tissue-tees or those little sweater boleros that Target has had for the last couple of years. I'll wear this with ballet flats or dance sneakers that I use for streetwear. I almost never wear open-toe shoes because I live in a city, and the stuff that is on the sidewalk... well... the idea of my little pink toesies going anywhere near what is on the sidewalk... it doesn't bear thinking about....

My leggings are all by Max Studio and Theory, straight leg and bootcut. They last years, and have good substance to them, so they actually look like pants, and not glorified tights. They have a good cut to wear with a shorter tops, without feeling like I'm showing my ladyparts. (I somehow felt like Will Ferrell in Anchorman, typing that last bit).

I rarely tuck in - only it's been a very very clean eating week for me, and if the blouse ruffled and dressy and drapes pretty. I put a corset-type belt around my waist and some boots, and again, the look is equestrian.

Thank you for all of the ideas! I also typically wear my leggings as tights and never without covering my butt, but these particular "leggings" are more like pants in that they are VERY thick and are actually sold at J.Crew as "Pixie Pants" in the pants section. For someone like me with a larger bottom where they inevitably fit me tighter, I wear them like a pant/legging hybrid, if that makes sense? I've definitely worn them with long cardigans and longer sweaters as well, but somehow with layers I feel more covered?

I have some leggings in denim and twill. "Jeggings" I guess for the denim. Not sure what the twill would be called. I wear these like pants, and will sometimes wear tops that don't cover my backside. No tucking the tops in, though, or anything crazy like that. I will sometimes wear boots, but I'm just as likely to wear sandals or clogs. I prefer to have a bit of height in the heel, but I'm careful not to go too Peg Bundy. I will sometimes wear flats with them, but not often.

I also have knit leggings made of thinner material, that are more like very opaque tights. I wear those under tunic length tops or sweaters. Or, a shorter tee but with a longer cardigan or jacket over that. Same preferences regarding footwear, although if my topper is dress length, I am more likely to go with a flat shoe. I'm not sure why. Maybe in my head, I'm no longer wearing a top overy my leggings (which looks better with a heel), but rather I'm wearing leggings under my dress (which looks fine with flats). Interesting. I've never considered that before.

The first time I wore leggings, back in the day, I didn't care about the shape of my top. Big, boxy, sweaters over leggings was typical for me. Now, I prefer to pair leggings with tops that skim the body, but aren't too form fitting. Or, if my top is form fitting, I want something a bit looser to wear over it. I want to show my shape off, but without creating the bumps and bulges that come with wearing clothes that are too tight. It's a fine line.

This, of course, doesn't mean that you couldn't pair a big boxy sweater with a pair of leggings and look terrific in it. If you are interested in that idea, give it a try.

I wear leggings quite a bit, with long tunics that could almost be mistaken for dresses. Sometimes I also wear them with dresses. For footwear, I pair them with ballet flats, flat boots, or booties. I don't think of them as pants, though. Some of my leggings looks overlap with my skinny-pant looks--i.e., with long tunics, worn with ballet flats. But with skinny pants, I'll wear a shorter tunic or even a top that shows my behind, depending on how close the fit is.

I subscribe to the rule of wearing leggings only with longer tunics or dresses and not as a substitute for pants. I do have jeggings that I can wear shorter tops with and do so. Here are a few examples of how I have styled leggings...

http://versatilestylebytracey......ger-types/

http://versatilestylebytracey......-inspired/

http://versatilestylebytracey......nge-day-4/
I like to style leggings with light layers and blousey tops. Also, I always pair them with knee high boots. See here: http://bit.ly/10E9bmd

I'm looking for some other ideas. How does everyone else style leggings?
