This shirt looks great on you! I like the way you've styled it for the outfit in 1-3 and 6-7; I MUCH prefer the shirt done up or knotted rather than left open (in those cases I'd rather see a little denim jacket). I was also going to suggest the same as Angie's sleeve roll tip, and if you do like it a little bit neater just fold the cuff back once, push up, and then button the tab. Also agree with VC and Claire, this is a great basic and will work really well as the "denim" element to any smart casual outfit.

Just wanted to say thank you for starting this thread and great job styling the shirt. I have the same one in grey and I was at a loss as to how to get started. Your photos + VC's links have given me a great jumping off point.

Looks like you are sorted! Well done! The shirt looks amazing on you, Abie.

Tip: no need to roll the sleeve when you pull up the tab. Un-button the cuff, keep the sleeve unrolled and button up the tab. It's a nicer effect on the sleeve to my eye.

Thank you, these are some very good ideas. I will play with it some more tonight.

VelvetyChocolate - Thank you so much for the links and pictures. This is very helpful. I really love the tied over formal dress look that Angie did. I have a very nice Navy silk dress that I have been trying to think of a way to wear to work because it barely gets worn otherwise. It's not near as fancy as Angie's dress, but I think the denim top can be a good solution there.

Claire, you are right, its very likely that I could pick up some bolder bottoms that need something like this, and I seem to have several things it will work with now. Plus, just the fact that it fits... Button up shirts that fit me well are not easy to come by.

Abie, I had almost no button front shirts a year ago either. Just because it doesn't have a lot of *friends* to play with in your wardrobe right now doesn't mean you shouldn't keep it. It's such a basic and fits you really well. I like it tied over dresses and with that red skirt, and I'll bet you find more ways to wear it in the fall. You might get those bright jeans or other statement bottoms that need the calming influence of a denim shirt. Just my two cents!

I really like t his shirt on you The color is perfect. All of your suggestions sound good. #1/2 look great. Untucked over a pencil skirt and some cool shooties could look fab. I prefer the shirt tied over your dress rather than worn loose. Also over jeans would be good. I do think this can be dressed up or down.

Your little one is gorgeous.

Nice shirt!

I would be inclined to view the shirt as something akin to 'dressy jeans' in terms of Angie's "smart casual" formulas. The formula is that you'd pair nicer, better jeans with a pretty blouse, and dressier shoes etc.

Here's a link to one of my favourite "smart casual" blog posts that Angie wrote quite awhile back on the blog:

http://youlookfab.com/2008/01/.....nd-beyond/

I don't see why the slightly dressier denim Foxcroft tencel shirt wouldn't work as the 'denim piece' in a smart casual ensemble, it's just that things would be a bit reversed. The smarter-looking denim blouse/shirt you have would sub in for the better-quality dark wash jeans in Angie's formula. In this respect, you might want to pair the denim shirt/blouse with a dressier pencil skirt or perhaps slightly dressier pants. I guess what I'm saying is that I can't see why Angie's "smart casual" formula wouldn't work when it's the top that's denim instead of the bottoms?

How about the following ideas:

black tank, black high-low midi skirt, Foxcroft tencel denim shirt knotted at waist, cognac sandals/shoes etc. ?

the Foxcroft tencel denim shirt tucked into a dressier, more conservative-looking pencil skirt - ie. one of those Halogen seamed pencil skirts or perhaps one of your new Ellen Tracy Ponte skirts?

http://youlookfab.com/2010/03/.....ssy-skirt/

pairing the nicer-looking denim shirt you've just acquired with an actual suit?

using the shirt as a way to 'dress down' a fancier dress - kind of like pairing a denim or leather jacket with a fancier dress? See the below post:

http://youlookfab.com/2010/03/.....ball-gown/

dressing up the denim shirt in general:

http://youlookfab.com/2009/08/.....im-shirts/

More denim shirt ideas (love it paired with the sequined pencil skirt...wow!)

http://youlookfab.com/2010/03/.....im-shirts/

In the meantime, it looks like you scored a great shirt, and I'm sure you'll find a way to make it a real wardrobe workhorse. Fab find!

Maybe you can try the denim-on-denim look? Wear with a contrasting pair of denim bottoms. I hope you will be comfortable wearing this shirt! Pics?

All the things you said you have would work, Abie!

Dresses - you could wear this knotted over a dress.

Skirts/trousers - you could wear it untucked over a pencil for a debombshell look, you could tuck and add a belt, you could leave untucked and add a belt, wear knotted at the waist... TONS of options here.

Anthro has a similar-ish denim tencel shirt in their catalog, and the model wears it beautifully tucked into a pencil skirt. I also have a polka dot chambray shirt (from Anthro last year--go figure) which I wear open with the sleeves rolled, as a structured cover-up somewhere between a cardigan and a blazer.

This shirt from NAS arrived in the mail today in my size. I got the blue one.

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/fo.....tback=1060

I'm not 100% sold on it yet. Honestly it's been years since I've worn a button up, so I'm feeling a little clueless with styling.

The SA suggested colored denim jeans, like red. I don't really have any of those.
I have dresses, skirts, navy and black trousers.

Where should I start to decide if this is going to be a keep for me?
