I didn't notice the shoulder until Angie mentioned it, but as has been said, I think that is the way it is meant to fit. Not being lined makes it easier to alter but I still kind of like it as is. I particularly like the last two looks with the dress and tights. Looks very modern. I don't think it is bad with the jeans but I think the top underneath isn't quite working.

I don’t see a shoulder problem either but Angie is the expert. Is there any way you can get someone to take some photos of you with your arms by your side. Front and back?

I like it. I have a sugar eye for this look and I really like how you've styled it. Agree proportions and silhouette are of the day. Jaieen remember photos are static. As others mentioned you are in an unnatural position w your shoulders are lifted. You are not seeing it in a natural position in motion. It's also to my eye a swacket - cardi jacket. Unless the tweed is very firm and lined it won't have the crispness. IRO tweed jackets would be comparable. I would personally forget the shoulders. The "whole" look is elegant, fun, comfortable and versatile. No one IRL will notice although a Good tailor might be able to tweak shoulder pads to support this area, but, well it wouldn't bother me. Just love it on you. But you have to be happy. But big thumbs up.

I agree with tulle about this being a problem with the era and not the fit. I have a couple of '80's vintage jackets which are similar in proportion, and I love them dearly so I'm happy to wear them as they are.

If you like this jacket as it is, I'd say do the same, but make the styling as contemporary as possible. I love this with EF and sneakers or booties, less sure about it with the jeans.

I love how you've styled it, especially #3. I see what people are saying about the big shoulders. Like others, I'd be tempted to do a little surgery and remove the shoulder pads, and see if you can tame the extra fabric at the shoulders a bit. Especially since it's a thrift score, there's really no harm in trying.

The jacket fits you beautifully in the torso, really, so I don't think this is a size problem so much as a fashion-era problem. This style was very popular in the late '80s & early '90s: slightly extended shoulder, padded, and a fuller, sometimes puffed, upper sleeve. That's one problem with vintage thrifted things--I know too well! Certain details can just make a piece look dated. If I had this jacket, it would be pinned, sleeves removed, and possibly on its way to being ruined right now! Seriously, one warning about altering it: it looks like the shoulder (from neckline to sleeve) needs to be shortened about an inch, the armhole tightened and sleeve narrowed. When put back together, this will shorten the sleeve to "bracelet" length, which, though appropriate for the style, is something you might not want at all. You may prefer just to wear it as you've styled it here, and enjoy.

I like all of the styling options you've shown here - and can't comment on the fit as holding up one's arm to take a picture always throws off the look. I didn't notice until Angie pointed it out, but even still, I'm not I'm seeing what she is - not knowing what your body looks like underneath ,etc - which sounds weirder than I mean it to .

I like it ,I agree that it’s short but layering a longer top underneath as you have done works or wearing it with high waisted bottoms.I like it with the dress and leggings ,I think wearing it with blue things to pull the blue in it out is a nice idea.Because a tweed jacket can be seen as a more mature look l think I would tend to go modern with the rest of the outfit, avoid anything that says miss Marple.!

Janet, you were dead right to go for the tweed. The palette is lovely on you. Like Suz mentioned, you are generally buying your clothes a size too big - sometimes two sizes. This jacket fits nicely on the torso, but the sleeves and shoulders don't fit. Almost there and I like the styling creativity too.

It looks great on you!

I'm kind of weird, and would totally rock that jacket with high waisted skinnies and a slightly edgy black boot (or my tactical boots). But I'm weird, so there is that

It's a versatile jacket, and it isn't too short. It might require some thought about what pants to wear with it for me, but it looks great on you.

Shoulder pads can definitely be removed by a skilled tailor, and will actually change the way it hangs on you (might add a wee tiny bit of length).

Great score!

You found a beautiful jacket! If you love it, see if it is worth it to have the shoulder pads taken out and the shoulders altered. I like it with jeans and think it would look great with a slimmer fitting pair.

The colours are your colours and the texture is great. But you know what? You're still buying clothes a bit large for you, I think! Sometimes this happens after weight loss. My mother did this for YEARS...it just felt impossible to her that she could be her new size and she would not even look at clothes in that size...

J'aileen, that jacket would have called to me, too! I love the colors of the tweed, and the classic Chanel look. Sadly, I have to agree with Angie: the shoulders spoil that look. Chanel's jackets were famous for their high, small armholes and neat shoulder line, and this jacket--from the big-shouldered '80s/'90s period?--doesn't have those. Is it unlined? If so, it might be worth trying an alteration, though shoulders can be tricky. I would risk it, I think; St. John's quality is super.

I thrifted this St John tweed jacket just before we went out of town, and then I forgot about it. The fit feels perfect, although it has shoulder pads (probably removable), and is very short in length. I really like the blue and grey tweed fabric.

What do you think? Is it too short for jeans? How about with EF skirted leggings? Do you like it with booties or sneakers, or do think something else would be better?

Was this a good buy or a mistake?
