I think Tanya nailed it.

I had to look up "business casual" and "smart casual" when I was at an event that specified these two dress codes for different meals/meetings, and my impression was that the distinction is either excluding jeans (business casual) or including dressy denim (smart casual). Formal vs. cocktail is primarily the length of the dress.

You'll figure it out. When in doubt, you can't go wrong by going a bit dressier than you think you should.

I can make a graph after I get educated a bit just not sure what and where to put things ---just like in real life!! LOL
It's been really embarrassing in the past having people say I'm over or under dressed (You're mighty casual) for things so I still have things to sort in my head.

Try the archive for Dress Codes. There are about 25 different post dealing with types of dress and occasions.

This is a great question Patty but I do not think there is a simple answer or such a graph. Angie has a bunch of posts on these styles and maybe you can look through the archives.

The simplest and most general description would be ( from the dressiest to more casual):

Formal: long gowns for women, tuxedos for man
Semi-formal (cocktail): knee length fancy dresses
Business formal: Full suits, either with pants or skirts with blouses
Business casual: Mix and match of everything, but no jeans: skirt/pants with various tops, dresses, jackets optional
Smart casual: dresses up denim: jeans with heels and nice tops, possibly jackets
Casual: shorts, jeans with t-shirts etc.

This is by no means complete, but the quickest thing I could come up with.

Hi Patty! I just looked over the front page and the closest thing I could find there were Angie's "Dress the Occasion" posts, but I *know* she has written posts about business casual, business formal and the like. Have you seen those? I'll go 'troll the archives and see what I can find.

Is there a guide here for the different kinds of dress--being formal, semi formal (and what it means) , casual, business formal etc and what clothes items fits into types?
I find that I get confused because in my life in my mirror it might feel dressy but outside in the real world I feel or look to be in a different play!.
It'd be nice if there was a graph with dressing type on the left --corresponding clothing pieces in the middle and comments/caveats on the right that I could staple to my wall!!!
