Neel, great job at diagnosing your "fashion sickness"!

It's so frustrating when something that should be so simple—like white sandals—is so hard to find.

A few months ago, I bought the nude Okalas, even though I wasn't sure that I needed them. But I reasoned that I would eventually need a lighter-colored shoe for a lighter overall outfit (all I owned was dark shoes)—and I was right! Sometimes you need just the right shoe to finish off an outfit.

Laura - Glad you found something to fill the current wardrobe hole. At least sorted for now!

Quiet girl - Thank you for understanding!

Nancywalters - good luck with your shoe hunt! Sending some YLF fairy dust your way!

Parsley - I have been eyeing the Gizehs for quite sometime. But I always stopped myself from buying them thinking if they were actually fashionable or only the Arizonas were. But I can't imagine you being less fashionable ... So I think I might give them a go! They do work for my feet (I tried them once)

Dianne - Thank you for the encouragement!

Aida - Wise words spoken! I admire your beautiful shoes and the way they play a subtle role in completing your outfit. I think I need to find the balance where I do not heavily rely on shoes to make my outfits.

Aquamarine - thanks for chiming in! My white sandals hunt is still on for the reason you stated - nothing fits the bill for various reasons!

Oh I so get this! Shoes are definitely the deciding line between feeling fab or meh for me. It's difficult when you need a shoe refresher but nothing fits the bill for various reasons.

Good for you for figuring it out! Shoes are always an interesting topic, and I feel like for myself shoe longevity in my wardrobe is much shorter than clothing! They're also interesting because we all have slightly different requirements from our shoes. Two years back I made the decision that I wanted all of my footwear to be walkable (like, a few hours of urban walking) after a similar realization. It was stylistically painful going from my 4" heels down to flats and 2" heels, but now that I have more options it's quite lovely. That gap period can be tough though, and you identified it waaaay faster than I did I don't know that you need to hit every shoe trend, even just one might be enough. Or a shoe (or two) that fits a couple trends, such as a pointy heel/flat with an ankle strap.

Since following YLF I have realized that it is always all about the shoes!!! I have lots of clothes and I enjoy wearing them (although I have yet to post ) but I now know that shoes can make or break your outfit. They need to be good looking and comfortable and I was often compromising on one or the other. I am trying to follow the PPP method of shopping as we head into the fall.
I agree with Parsley regarding the Birk's. They are super comfortable and very trendy this year. I live in them all summer long!

Neel, if it's any consolation you do NOT look like you're in a rut. EVER!
But I understand the footwear issue, and I do think the right shoes can make all the difference in an outfit. I also feel your pain because I have very narrow, low volume feet.
Everybody has given you great suggestions, but I have a couple more to add to the mix.
I know you said you couldn't wear Birkenstocks, and neither could I- at least the usual Arizona style. But the Gizeh style works great for me, so I urge you to give them a try. I have worn mine non-stop this summer and just love them.
I have them in silver, but here they are in white, too:
http://www.zappos.com/birkenst.....flor-trade

Another Birk-like sandal that should work for your feet is this Mephisto style. They have an adjustable buckle, and they fit well on my feet and are very cushioned, supportive, and comfortable.

ETA: I'm assuming that these would be available pretty much world-wide, but excuse me if I'm wrong!

I can relate. For the past few hours I've been looking at Zappos, 6pm.com and Amazon trying to find some shoes to go with dress trousers. Lack of shoes is holding me back from wearing a number of items in my closet.

Bingo! I discovered this exact issue about two weeks ago when someone suggested "shopping your closet". Every outfit I tried to put together hinged on the shoes.

My feet aren't low volume but fussy and wide. I don't want to squeeze them into pointy toes or high heels.

At the NAS I bought Born (1 inch) heel booties....not super fashionable but super comfortable. I was also able to find one of Angie's ballet flat picks in a Wide.

That said, I am still wearing Vans and polka dot Keds with almost everything this summer especially my dresses.

So I hear you. am not pleased with the shoe options out there. I don't have a solution but I can commiserate!

I've been looking for the perfect pair of white or metallic sandals since last summer so I feel your pain! Especially when you can't wear many layers shoes really set the tone for an outfit. I finally settled for some beige sandals for this summer which are ok.

Thank you once again everyone for commiserating :)

Janet - I wish I could!!! Those will solve my glad and white footwear woes like you said. But alas! Even the Steve Madden glads that work well for low volume feet, another Angie pick, didn't even come here in the market yet! At least Steve Madden is readily available!

Texstyle - Having the right shoes are so important isn't it?! Shop away :)

Sara, Amiable and Joyce - Thank you for your encouragement :)

Lisap - You are so right! I have been lusting after these madden sneaks since rachylou mentioned it last. But I always thought I didn't need any more sneaks. I have 3 pairs but none of them are the right pair or something that goes with my entire wardrobe. Hopefully this would get me out of my fashion rut!

Angie - They do deliver I guess but they charge hefty shipping fees with taxes. The cost per item sums up to way too much even if you buy something on a sale. I am sure there are retail shops here that stock Stuart Weitzman, Sam Edelman and the likes (Bloomindales comes to mind), but they are all so far out that getting there is a hike by itself! Hopefully once the kids start school this September (younger one starts too! Yay!) I would have some me time to score the shops here in the mornings. I would be the happiest when I find these hidden treasures! Meanwhile I have collected a few items which hopefully would materialize into buys next month (note - still no sandals! Ack!).

Good luck on the hunt, and I find that often what you think you don't want for whatever reason (isn't my style etc) is exactly the piece to give everything a needed boost or to pull things together. I just bought a pair of white loafers, and if a year ago you had suggested I'd ever own or even look at such a thing I'd have said you were crazy. Now I love them for what they are doing for my wardrobe!

September first stop - Zara :)

Unfrumped - I find loafers a bit too classic for my style. But if I find something that suits my style I am sure to jump! I do have a pewter one which gets a lot of wear now :)

Sterling - Thank you for the boost!

Suz - I know! Where are the white sandals?!! Ack! Our summers and your winters are similar in that both are dreadfully long!

I also wondered how on earth you could be in a rut because you always look fab, and because you seem to wear a variety of silhouettes really well! But what a relief to diagnose the problem.

Is there any source for you to order and try the Stuart Weitzman white gladiators Angie recommended? They are a great fit on my low-volume feet, comfortable, and would meet your gladiator and white footwear needs/wants. I like the idea Elizabeth posted of the Trinas too. And yes, Zara might have some good options for you as well. Good luck!

Neel your recent posts do not at all look like someone in a rut, but I sympathize. Shoes are my main way of perking an outfit, and myself, up. Especially in the long summer, when you really can't wear that many clothes. I found that my Zara slip on sneakers were a surprise work house this summer even though I have other sneakers.

What a great analysis. I think we're often held back by footwear. It's one reason winter dressing can get so tricky for me in my climate -- boots, boots, and more boots. It gets tedious.

I love your new choice. And I join you in your sadness about white sandals. Where ARE those, anyway??? You and I are on the hunt for them first thing next spring, okay?

Good for you for figuring out what is holding you back. I can identify as I am now using footwear as a first line wardrobe refresher, but when I came to YLF, there were maybe 5 pair of shoes in my closet across all seasons, all in either black or brown except for big white athletic sneakers.

I love the Steve Madden shoes. I think they will work nicely for you and might be the solution to your wardrobe blahs.

I thought you should try some loafers in your neutral colors.
Summer non- sneaker shoes are hardest for me, since I don't wear sandals much. And I share your issue of low volume feet-- a lot of the " cage" looks are volumed- out for me.
Even with having a couple of good pairs of loafers, I still found that a ballet flat was better with some skirts.
Then I am trying the not- trendy but hopefully " classic" low- heeled pump.

I have gone through a phase like this with summer shoes. I know you can buy from Zara, so what about this flat?http://www.zara.com/ca/en/woma.....53057.html

I must say, the idea of you in a style rut did strike me as a little off, you always look amazing. But I get it, totally. I also rely heavily on shoes in the summer, when dressing is simpler. Have you considered the silver Trinas? I have found them to be a workhorse for me, they go with everything. Not only have they replaced white, but my black sandals have seen seen less wear this year as well.

Cocolion, those sandals are amazing for you!

Big, big hugs!

I already cheated on Austerity August because the sandals I had been wanting all summer long finally got marked down! And there was only 1 pair left in my size on Amazon. Need I say more. (Does that make you feel better?)

Makes total sense to me - if my footwear isn't working then my wardrobe isn't working. Hope you find something soon
