Definitely have fits and starts. Job changes, budget changes, lack of time, lack of energy... even some regression! Say, if I go to a swap meet and buy a bunch of stuff just because it's cheap and my resistance is lowered after not being there a while. lol

Yep, I think I plateau in every new thing I attempt, including wardrobe building/personal style! Sometimes it's good to just sit back and let everything percolate. :)

To be honest, I'm probably in a holding pattern right now as far as how I get dressed, because I'm quite enjoying my current style/uniforms. But actively participating in YLF has made me think about my closet & the clothes it contains in new ways.

Perhaps because I sing, and teach singing, I'm quite comfortable with the ebb and flow of learning and growing. Sometimes I plateau style wise by choice: I'm busy, and having little time and energy for optional hobbies, or I'm particularlly happy where I am. Sometimes I plateau because I'm unsure what steps to take next. Either way, it's a natural part of the process, and probably necessary, as well. YLFers have noticed that breakthroughs often come at the end of periods of "style confusion."

Yes. Mostly 2 reasons for me - moving, and budget. I've had several month periods of SYC a few times over my YLF time, and seem to be moving between opposing climates yearly at this point. Whatever the reason, it's helpful to have times of little or no buying to really evaluate and wear what you've got, before you get carried away in what ends up to not be the right direction after all.
Then there is the separate internal plateau not influenced by my outside circumstances. Either I'm coasting in a style that feels really 'me' at that moment, or conversely what I am wearing isn't quite working but I'm not sure what to change to make it work. Right now I'm happily coasting in a groove where I feel very 'me'. I'm still buying, but quite discerningly.

Oh my heavens, lots of plateaus and surges. So much is at play here! What else we've got going on in our lives, our financial resources, what is available in the stores, not to mention our developing sense of ourselves and our style. Add in any major changes (weight change, baby, job change, move, marriage, divorce, new house) and....well...it's no wonder we don't necessarily make continual progress.

Sometimes it's best to simply look everything over and make a decision. As in, "I have this many hours and this much energy. For the next three months I'm going to put it here, here, and here." Maybe that will involve fashion and maybe it won't.

I think knowing when to just maintain for awhile is as important as " moving forward". I make bad choices when I try too hard to fix everything right away or have too much going on. I even need to be more PPP when I do have time & energy for style fun.

It sounds like you understand your own learning style and that's good.
I am learning steadily, with moments of confusion that precede breakthrough realisations, the most recent being that I need to focus on fit.

My wardrobe improvement has also had hiccups along the way. The last time was after an epiphany where I realised that RATE is an important style aspect for me. At that time I mainly shopped my closet and hung out on YLF until I felt more certain of my style goals.

On your path to fabness, have you had times when you needed or chose to maintain a holding pattern rather than continue improvement to your wardrobe or other aspects of your style?

Right now, there's a lot going on. I've made huge improvements in my lounge/homewear capsules, and some of this has spilled over into workwear. (e.g. solid t-shirts bought for home have edged out the swag tees I was wearing.) I've tried on dozens of jeans and bought tights and a sweater dress. But that's about all I can manage, for now. There remains the immediate question of a winter outerwear piece, and I'm happy to keep learning by reading.

Was your wardrobe improvement steady, or did you have some fits and starts as well?
