I am so late to this thread & am probably going go repeat what has been said before. I think your promise to yourself is an important learning that wouldn't have been made without the creative pressure to post an outfit so often. I think you have very high standards because some of the outfits you have felt less than happy with looked pretty good to me - but it's not what I think that counts. Dress to feel good and if that means repeat dressing & less experimentation so be it. But I for one love your willingness to take a risk with what you wear & admire you for it.

Shannon, a great post with great responses. There is nothing wrong with the tried and true and it is one of my goals to keep wearing what really works and stop wearing second best just for variety. With that said, experimenting is great and just seeing how much better one thing works than another on a particular person is a great help to me - particularly when I am that person!

Thank you for posting this! I can so relate. My feelings seem so intermingled with how I feel in what I am wearing. I want to experiment because that is half the fun, but I don't want to take what I'm wearing so seriously. My confidence should not be dependent on what I am wearing.

BTW, you look sensational today.

I hear you on the self imposed pressure to 'up' your game with your WIW posts. Honestly, I have worn several great outfits over the last week and never bothered to snap a pic! I'm not sure if it's because I am finally confident that they are great or I'm being lazy or if in my head I'm thinking, "they've seen this dress before - all I did was switch out the belt, cami, and shoes." Maybe it's a combo of all three. But at any rate, I have reached a point where keeping up with WIW's is more work than fun right now. When it stops being fun it's time to pull back. Experimenting and remixing are great - as long as it's still fun. If not, I agree with you to go with tried and true looks you feel fab in. Keep it fun!!!

'I HEREBY PROMISE TO BE TRUE TO MYSELF AND MY STYLE AND TO ONLY WEAR THE THINGS I FEEL FAB IN, EVEN IF IT MEANS I’M REPEATING OUTFITS MORE OFTEN'

If youlookfab had 10 commandments I believe this would come straight after 'fashion must be fun'. I think it is important to experiment when you feel inspired and not because you feel it is expected. Obtaining a small functioning wardrobe will inevitably leads to repeats or uniforms emerging. EMBRACE THEM THEY ARE YOUR FRIENDS.

Shannon, just wanted to say the final outfit you came up with is a 10. The purple jacket, the printed top, the pants = all work together extremely well.

Dressing well isn't easy. Sometimes it takes multiple attempts to get it right. You are doing great in your style journey!

ETA -- FWIW I liked the menswear outfit with lavender shirt. But I couldn't put my finger on something that wasn't a 10 to my eye and I think it was the high contrast between the cream vest and brown pants. A lower contrast pant might be worth a try, as Traci suggested.

Another thought about trying the menswear direction -- maybe you just need to focus on a more fitted menswear look rather than a loose menswear look. That extra bit of tailoring to show off your lovely proportionate figure might be all you need.

Ladies, all: Please, please post your *repeat* outfits! Maybe I missed it your first, second, or third time and/or am in a better place to *see* it now! Or will see different things. As with many matters, I rather need repetition to make something register and stick. Slow learner here.

I really was/am amazed about the diversity of your outfits and the willingness to try something new-Shannon! You rock YLF, but can relate to your commitment.
I'm not a big experrimenter myself IRL-but do try to push myself trying new trends in the shop-and take picties home so can think twice about. Then take only some baby steps(as Suz said) ahead. I have a few old formulas which I stick to and repeat a lot of outfits (with small tweeks, like replacing items, changing shoes, or adding a scarf etc)and still have fun with fashion(on my level, of course:-)).

I do know what you mean, and I actually admire you very much for posting so regularly. It takes a lot of work and a lot of nerve, IMO, to post so much. I have to sort of "gear up" emotionally before I do it, and I can't face it when I am feeling too vulnerable, etc. So, please know that many of us truly admire you and are excited about your style journey. I think experimenting is fab, but I also think that you can allow yourself to trust yourself and know what you know, you know :)?

Wow - you ladies are amazing and have rendered me quite speechless (trust me - that's quite amazing as my hubby would attest to!) over your kind words and insight. I'm afraid I can't respond to each of you individually but know that I truly appreciate your replies.

I know I'm going to continue to post outfits as I learn so much from that interaction. And I'm going to allow myself to wear repeats in their entirety (or slightly tweaked) and not worry 'bout it.

I'm going to experiment from time to time and not get my nose out of joint when it doesn't work - how else am I going to learn right? I had to remind myself that if I had never tried out the vintage inspired dress for the Christmas party (Angie approved) I would have never found the vintage/retro portion of my rubric. But if when I try something new out and it doesn't "feel" right, I'm gonna drop it or change (like this morning).

I'm blaming my recent insecurities on hormones...and moving on! I hope you know I love all of you!!!

PS - I don't mind seeing repeat outfits at all! I personally just don't post mine because I am lazy and don't want to bother with the picture taking, editing, posting when I don't have something new to share. I do wear repeat outfits all the time though! in fact, I find that one of the great things about posting new outfits and getting feedback here is that it creates a big "backlist" of FFBO outfits for busy days, plus I have a photo so I remember the outfits!

I can see why one could "feel the pressure" in coming up with daily creative alternatives, when it comes to WIWs.

I cannot relate to your story, since I don't really post WIWs, but I have quite an anecdote of my own. This happened while one of my friends came over to visit from Miami.

In all Miami splendor, my friend arrived from the "naked city" in colorful outfits, more revealing clothing - still tasteful - and bolder prints. Little preppy me felt like I had to "up the move" and for the first three days, I came up with some "get ups" I don't want to even think about. It was until the fourth day, when I ran out of "Miami inspired" ideas that I went back to my normal programming. My friend saw me after I got dressed, that fourth day and literally jumped off her seat, then told me: "You look so beautiful today". That was the first time she said anything about my appearance.

The moral of the story is that there is nothing wrong with sticking to what works for you and what makes you feel that you are highlighting your best attributes. Then people see YOU, not your clothes. I probably projected my discomfort with the clothes I was wearing those first three days.

As a side note, I figure if you end up boring someone with your repeats, they can look elsewhere!

Also, I am not sure how you do it, the taking pictures etc. I barely have time to brush my teeth in the morning lol, soooo you don't need to post WIWs everyday. I'll miss the daily dose though.

You are an excellent sport and an inspiration to us all!

Hear hear! Great epiphanies and glad you are sticking to your style guns! Yes fashion is all about having fun so do whatever it takes to keep it fun for you. You look great in today's outfit--that cobalt blue is a great color on you.

I must be in the minority because I don't mind posting and seeing repeat outfits. That's real life! I don't even bother to remix if I like the original combo.

I went back to the other post with the before picture to fully understand what you were talking about.
I get when you say that when you dress things that don't fit properly even if you know that it is not you it's the clothes doesn't do any good for your own body image. It also happens to me and I venture with most people no matter how comfortable they are with their body. But this is your perception , to my eye I could see it was the clothes, underneath you are the same Shanon, with the same fab posture and tucking abilities we all know and love.
It is awesome that you arrived to your epiphany because it makes you happy and that is all that really matters.
And you are so clever about your own style that you looked at the first outfit didn't like it and found this perfect one.

Aw, I am sorry that your menswear looks didn't work out for you. It is always tough trying out a new look but, as you said, it's not worth it if you aren't having fun and don't feel fab. I am high fiving you for your decision to only wear what you feel fab in - can't tell you how many times I've tried to be creative and just dumped the whole idea for a FFBO at the last minute.

I hope that you don't stop experimenting, though! I always love seeing what you come up with, even when it is not a departure from your rubric. Keep the joy alive.

Shannon, definitely do not feel pressured to post outfits every day! I did that a few years ago when I had my own blog, and it really took all the fun out of getting dressed. So much pressure to post something new and interesting. Now, I don't post as many outfits on the forum because I do repeat outfits quite a bit. I like to try new things and mix it up, but there are many outfits that I love and want to wear again and again.

I love your outfit this morning. Purple is one of my favorite colors on you. Don't be afraid to experiment, but also don't be afraid to fall back on an old favorite and feel like you're letting anyone down. Do what makes you happiest.

Oh Shannon I so get this! The pressure to be original that I guess we only put on ourselves because it is a little high to be told that is FAB by all these lovely ladies!

And being tempted to try every new thing at the store. I never realized how stressful that is. I used to love retail therapy and getting a look at what stores have to offer, but now since deciding on a style, that means I now get stressed at the store by all the temptations NOT in my style/rubic. So I am more and more often leaving with nothing and going home to SYC!

I hardly have posted WIW lately because I am all about the repeat right now. I have very few (7 actually) spring outfits and have been rewearing them since March so nothing new to post really. So i support fully your joining by reuse and be proud team!

Great epiphany, Shannon!

I already said something about this in your other thread, but will add to it a bit here. Basically, I think that it's stimulating and educational to experiment with new styles once in a while, but sometimes it's really obvious that something does not suit you or makes you feel uncomfortable (like me and modern classic, where it was not an image thing but more of a feeling that I was wearing someone else's clothes). I think that being uncomfortable in your clothes makes you twitchy and uncomfortable in your own skin, which does mess with your self-confidence. In these cases, I think it's good to experiment once or twice, but then you should accept that it's not you and move on, while still appreciating the style on others.

"I know what works for me and what I look and feel good in – why don’t I just stick with that?" This is a GREAT epiphany, Shannon. Finding a style that works well for you is the goal, really, isn't it? It would make me feel stressed, too, to have to come up with new and creative outfits all the time. Although you might want to do that sometimes in order to tweak your style and explore new directions, having a style that works and feels like "you" is plenty good enough.

I'm not a big experimenter, and I wear a lot of repeat outfits...and I'm good with that. It's also why I don't post that often. Many of my outfits look a lot alike! That said, I really enjoy seeing the outfit posts of YLFers who LOVE to experiment.

I always enjoy your posts, Shannon. And I admire your willingness to try new looks and experiment. Here's to dressing in a way that is true to yourself.

That FAB smile should be one of your measures if your outfit is right.

You have great style and I always enjoy your WIW posts. That being said, please don't feel like you have to post a creative and new outfit everyday. I am currently on picture posting hiatus because it's getting hot here and my outfits are tried and true summer repeats. I may post the occasional creative pairings, but for the most part, I'm sitting back and enjoying all the other WIW's.

This is a great outfit and IKWYM about putting pressure on yourself to constantly "top your last outfit". Deep breath!

I love the printed blouse and that topper is perfect with it. I hope you feel comfortable in your own skin and fabulous all day. You look great!

Shannon, you look terrific in that blue!

And I admire your experimental zest and your willingness to go out on a limb to try something new just as much as I admire your decision to stick to what you know and love! I think both approaches have their place in every woman's fashion journey. Perhaps it is a question of balance. Not trying too many new looks in a week, LOL.

I am not a big experimenter. Baby steps for me all the way, and LOTS of repeat outfits. Partly that's because I don't have much choice. My closet simply isn't full enough for me to play around the way some of our wonderful list-mates do. I tend to use Bella's Picture challenges as my opportunities to experiment, and apart from that, I generally stick to my formulas, adding in new pieces as I buy them and adjusting the silhouettes a bit as required.

But I'm way behind you in this, still very much in a building the wardrobe and working out my own style phase. You, on the other hand, know what you rock!! And you rock it SOOOOO well. So I applaud your determination to stick to that...while also hoping you won't give up trying new things, because quite often your experiments pay off big time! THink of the Marcies!!!!

You go, Shannon!!!!!!!!!! Maybe you should not put so much pressure on yourself to post so frequently. Give yourself permission to repeat outfits and go with the tried and true, because they are "you" and they work, and you're still stylish, even if it's not a brand new creative outfit every time. It sounds like the pressure is starting to take the fun out of fashion. What do you think?

KILLER look.

Brilliant epiphanies.

Do NOT feel pressure to post outfits that are "creative" just for the sake of it. No need to post each day either. There is NOTHING wrong with repeating outfits. Stay true to your rubic.

And also, make the mistakes when you feel like experimenting. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. We ALL fell down when we were learning to walk, and we ALL still trip up a storm when we walk as adults. That's okay!
