It sounds like you are finding your way back to your own personal style. Perhaps your style shifts over time. I can remember a much more ladylike version and you had a vintage flavor for a while. They were all very interesting styles but you have evolved. The fluid top and more fitted bottom is a good look for you. I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Shannon, I want #5! How fab.

I love reading these posts. Your insights are brilliant and what you have shared make sense. I love all your new pieces and you know tops are my greatest challenge. I never have enough and it's difficult to to find the right ones. If you can find ones you like then stock up.

I realise that in some ways I am minimal in my style but I still need the variety a moderate sized wardrobe offers.

I think we just have to be open to the fact that our wardrobes are always evolving and that's part of the fun:)

Love these posts Your goal of wardrobe cohesion sounds fantastic. Ideally it gives us the option of having a smaller wardrobe while still having variety, which is a good thing imo :)

I'm like the upside down version of you TS. I love fluid on the bottom half of my body but not so much on the top - makes sense given I'm in Oz

Cohesion, that's a great word, Shannon. Just by restricting your colour palette a bit more, you've come a lot closer to that. Although your wardrobe always did "hang together" in my mind.

Angie - the "fluidity continuum" makes perfect sense. I think in my head I felt "fluid" needed to be more exaggerated. Now I'm seeing that I can have a fluid item but it doesn't mean it's oversized, if that makes sense. And isn't it funny that I've come full circle to my pencil skirts and boots? As a stylist, do you find that often people experiment with all sorts of silhouettes and style and then "come home"?

thimbelina - yep, that's my office perfectly described. Drives me nuts!

Suz - first I realized that it wasn't "minimalism" I was seeking, but rather some form of "simplicity". Now I realize that it isn't that either. It's some sort of wardrobe cohesion I think.

Lisa - lol bicep curl That's what jackets were invented for!

Neel - it's funny you mention the Aviators. I absolutely love them - but only with heels to balance the volume. Problem is, I can wear heels less and less. So I'm not sure about them to be honest.

Elizabeth - the one armed top is gorgeous! I thought it might be too long on me but it works somehow. And it isn't weird at all - at least not in my opinion. I think you'd look amazing in it...just saying...

It all makes sense to me - and I think you've chosen an apt style descriptor. All of my favourite outfits of yours are with a more fitted, slimmer bottom silhouette. It just is so clear to a non-subjective viewer what looks fantastic on you - and you've nailed it yourself. I am quite taken with this one-armed blouse. I was a little alarmed at its name at first:) (sounds ominous) but I love the look. I think if I do a few more bicep curls, I'm going to try it on.

All of your new pieces are going to fit right in with what you have - and will answer your crazy office temperatures. I can't wait to see you in the leggings and boots and the one-armed bandit.

I like your new, simple rubric, and I also like your reflections, which show increased self-knowledge and acceptance. Also, I agree that you look great in a silhouette that showcases your calves and ankles! Plus, your new pieces are fantastic! Drooling over that first Danier top and the Chelsea boots.....

It is okay not to be a minimalist. It is okay to enjoy the thrill of the find and the joy of the mix. I had had to acknowledge that I will never be a true minimalist, either, at least not if I have any clothing budget to speak of -- I just enjoy trying new things too much for that. But I feel that if I keep my closet in control, know what I have and wear everything I have in an amount appropriate to its function, then I feel satisfied. (e.g. I don't expect my cocktail dress to be a workhorse -- as long as I enjoy wearing it a couple of times a year, it's good.) I will recycle my used items responsibly, aim for ethical purchases, and keep within my budget. And if I can do all those, then I figure it's all right to continue to have fun with fashion but adding pieces and editing sensibly. Life's too short to wear clothes you don't love!

This sounds like a great plan, Shannon, and is one my formulas too (although I think I lean more unstructured).

I do think that with our long winters, the practical formula of fitted on the bottom (for boots) and loose on top does get monotonous, although I've yet to solve that dilemma for me! Sack dresses and tights are my current alternative. With your fab closet maybe you won't feel that way!

Urban fluidity sounds perfect for your style. I can see how that applies to your more recent outfits. I like your emphasis on fluidity vs. unstructured which really struck a chord with me. I think I sometimes confuse the two as well.

Sounds great, Shannon.

Unstructured runs on a continuum. Any form of Fluidity is less structured than Tailored. Oversized, slouchy and baggy pieces are a lot less structured than a fluid piece. Hope that makes sense.

And you are back to your original YLF Uniform. GREAT. If it's not broken - don't fix it. xo

Hope all my Canadian Fabbers had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. The weather in my neck of the woods was positively glorious. I wasn't on the forum this weekend in order to play "catch up" with my family and my housework but am back today and wanted to fill you in on a few things.

Last week I was moaning and groaning about where my style was http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....---musings but thanks to: trying on every, single, thing in my closet; some hard thinking about what I want from my style; and some very deliberate shopping, I am in a much better mood about it all.

This is what I discovered:

My new style rubric or moniker is Urban Fluidity. I think I was getting confused between fluid and unstructured and have arrived at the conclusion that what I seek is fluidity - softness, movement, drape. Not unstructured - which IMHO denotes lack of shape. But combined with that fluidity, I must have some type of urban edge - boots, leather topper, juxtaposition of some type.

The fluid portion of my outfits will only be on the top half of my body - drapey cardigan, voluminous blouse, fluid dress. I do not feel good when that fluidity is on the bottom half of my body. I like my legs, calves and ankles and this will be a part of me that is more emphasized - via pencil skirt or slim legged pants.

My office is ice cold in the summer but extremely warm (bordering on hot) in the autumn/winter. Therefore light layering pieces are absolutely key for me when the cold weather arrives (and yes, I know that seems backwards). While others are bundling up in turtlenecks, heavy sweaters and long underwear, I will be wearing light weight, short sleeved blouses with a topper of some sort so that I can be warm when outside, but strip off that blazer or leather jacket when it becomes uncomfortable indoors. This layering will only apply to my work capsule since casually, I will want to dress warmer.

I have streamlined and simplified my wardrobe significantly the past three months but I do not wish to be a true minimalist or go any smaller. In fact, I have discovered that although I have enough bottoms (between skirts and pants) I have a serious shortage of tops and will be purchasing several over the next few weeks.

Items I've purchased recently and feel really good about:

Pic #1 - light weight animal print pullover from Cleo petite. I sized up so it's a bit more fluid but not sloppy.

Pic #2 - animal print chiffon/silk/cotton blouse from Danier Leather.

Pic #3 - Clarks black leather Chelsea boots.

Pic #4 - NYDJ jegging with faux suede panel on the lower leg.

Pic #5 - mixed media one armed blouse from Danier Leather.

Thanks for indulging me and letting me write down my thoughts. It helps keep me focused. Would love your feedback if you have the time or inclination :)

ETA: Numbering corrected and pic #5 added.
