Yes! Rachylou nailed it. Academic boho...understands the semiotics of style, can dress in anthropological mufti when needed (cf citizenship ceremony), many times can't actually be bothered to make an effort. To you i say, have a uniform! Some in the fashion world call it a capsule...i call it garanimals for grownups (tm).

Also check out academichic.com. No longer updated, but still interesting "lessons" from four different women in academe.

It sounds to me as if you're really clear on the things you like and don't and what works for you. Comfort and practicality are key, and simplicity in the sense of not having to work hard at making a look work for you. It sounds as if your clothes must work for you, must allow you to do the day's activities. No-nonsense, as Angie might say. This reminds me a bit of Ornella's recent posts -- her style having changed from an office environment to MOTG, and needing to inject more rugged (yet still classic) elements -- flat boots for riding her bike, wearing more denim, crossbody bags, etc. She might be an inspiration of sorts?

Mander, you sound as if you have a very well defined sense of style to me, even though you haven't come up with a descriptor yet. I see classic, boho, and natural elements to your style. Natural in the sense of fresh and unaffected. I am curious to see what descriptors Angie and the forum come up with. Loved hearing your musings!

From your description above, I definitely get a Modern Classic element paired with a bit of androgyny too, Mander: with the British country side items and menswear inspired clothing (both styles I adore myself as well). I'm not good at coming up with style descriptors-(

Mander, I loved your post. As Carla says, it could have been written by me! Especially the laziness part. And you are so honest but non-judgemental about yourself which is delightful.

I sense you are mainly satisfied with your style, but not completely or you wouldn't have posted this. I understand this feeling. I don't have a lot of wisdom, but for what it's worth I always learn more each time I peruse Angie's library. The formula posts are enlightening, as well as dressing your body type. Find the forum members whose styles resonate with you and revisit their outfit posts. And finally, enjoy where you are in your journey because you know a lot about yourself already.

Read your post twice, because it could have been written by me. I've been taking pictures and posting WIW's from my closet while I psych myself up to some purchases. (I'm a frugalista!). Identifying my style has been a work in progress, but Rachylou provided a moniker that has resonance - academic boho!

I do a lot of dresses with jackets (like your citizenship outfit posting) or pants/ skirts with sweaters. There is a certain soft slouchyness, even to my jackets. I like tactile fabrics, and corduroy, velvet, and tweed are well represented in my wardrobe. I don't seem to be comfortable in things that are sharp or crisp. I don't do much makeup ( a slick of pink lipstick) and hair is pretty low maintenance. I don' t have a lot of accessories, but like a big shawl- like scarf, and a leather bag.

At first I was using natural/ sporty/ classic, but Academic boho works better. I'll share that descriptor with you, if you think it works!

Hmm, maybe your main style is casual and classic, and then depending on the outfit, you throw in other influences ie rugged, edgy, or boho. It does help to have a benchmark of sorts to evaluate new purchases - my own very scientific one is to say could I wear this right now, and if not where would I wear it. Pitiful but it seems to work for me.

The questions on my parka thread got me thinking about style. I've been struggling to define my style for some time, partly because I feel like I don't really have one! But some words that resonate with me are rugged, casual, classic, comfortable, simple, perhaps edgy.

Even when I'm dressed up I am a bit casual, and I rarely go anywhere that requires dressing up beyond dark wash jeans and a nice top. My style is not sporty, exactly, but I do spend a fair amount of time outdoors. My most common outfit is jeans, boots, and a trench or jean jacket, often with a wool baseball or baker boy cap. I find myself drawn to a combination of classic British country style stuff (tweed, houndstooth, riding boots, hacking jackets, wool sweaters), menswear (suits, blazers, waistcoats, brogues), rock/goth/punk/edgy (leather, denim, Doc Martens, cowboy boots, black), and resort wear for the summer (loose linen trousers, maxi dresses, comfy sandals, giant sunglasses, sun hats).

I prefer a balanced (vs. minimal or maximal) and modern look, sometimes playful, but I try to avoid girly or twee stuff. I like big earrings and ethnic jewellery but lately I rarely wear necklaces. I'm not that fond of brown or tan, but prefer grey, black and white, graphic patterns, cool and saturated colors. I aspire to look authoritative and confident, but relaxed and comfortable at the same time. My main figure-flattering priority is to minimize my apple belly while emphasizing my hourglass-y waist, so to that end I like a tiny bit of bombshell but not much oversized or waist-surrendering stuff. I'm not too worried about looking taller or avoiding leg-shortening looks. I am appallingly lazy about my appearance, and I rarely wear makeup or do anything to my hair aside from letting it dry in its naturally curly state. I still have something of a student perspective, which is mainly manifested in my penchant for enormous tote bags stuffed with gadgets and notebooks, jeans, and comfortable shoes.

So, what does that add up to? Tweed rock? Perpetual student? Or just plain confused? ;-)
