Lynne and Vix--- thank you! The pictures of the buildings that I posted for inspiration are from Mexico. I lived in a border town for three years and love Mexican culture and the adobe, stucco, and colors. These aren't my shots, but I am a decent amateur photographer and am a sucker for the way that the textures photograph. Some of the others are from Hawaii and Oregon.

Bold and organic, huh? I guess I could see that. I do find a lot of inspiration in nature but have never thought of it like that because I don't really see my style as organic in the same way that many other people that have embraced that vibe, but I do see where you are going wit that. A different way of incorporating organic elements :)

I did see Australia, but I honestly don't remember much about Kidman's fashion--- maybe after she loosened up a bit? I will admit I don't care for her much. I was rather entranced by the aboriginal boy and the landscape! I grew up in a reservation border town and my field of study extends to indigenous issues, so I probably looked at that movie from a political, historical, and ethical standpoint more than others. I was probably more inspired by the drover than the missus.

Lynne, thanks for the link. I love the boots and leatherwork in that catalog. Most of the clothing is a little too preppy/classic american sportswear (ironic since it is Australian) for me. I lived on a ranch for many years and I find I go either very sophisticated in an art gallery owner type of way (I had this gorgeous photographer mentor that inspired me) or I like to have a lot of rugged elements (that buckaroo, harsh landscape that australia also reflects--). All in all I fall somewhere in between marlon brando and trace adkins and carolina herrera.

Angie, THANK YOU! I know your wrists and arms are sore and I really appreciate your professional time and input. Classic casual Euro style....I love it!

Elly, the more I think about you elements the more Australian they seem - have you seen Nicole Kidmans wardrobe in the movie Australia? (or, like every other red-blooded woman in the cinema, were you too busy concentrating on Hugh Jackman?)

CRW, I can't wait to see some of your elements of love in action!

Kate, you are so organized and you list is so clear. Do you think the word impeccable might appear somewhere in your style description?

Vix - thanks for your wisdom. It's nice to have others here to bounce our ideas off, but I guess our style really is intrinsic and as CRW said, may not yet be as obvious to others. I often ogle Art Nouveau jewellry but have yet to splurge. DH did surprise me one year with a Tiffany style lamp - it is one of the things I would race back into a fire to rescue! And I may yet do a WIW inspired by one of Mucha's lovely art nouveau ladies :D.

Julie, there is something etheral about your colouring, your wiws always have an other-worldliness to them that I adore. I'd love to meet you IRL one day!

Elly --

To me, your inspiration photo/description all have a very bold + organic thing happening. Maybe something to explore there?

FWIW, when the Style Statement book came out I watched others do similar exercises and while it's interesting to see how others perceive our look/style -- and those words always resonated -- people's "keepers" were almost always the ones that they developed or tweaked til it felt really, innately "them."

But I love when people share their process, so I don't mean to sound/be all schoolmarm-y!

Hi Lynne --

I enjoyed your list/analysis/photos and think you've captured something that will make it easy to "stay the course" and keep picking winning colors/styles/accessories.

I am a sucker for Art Nouveau so hope you'll share any existing/new pieces that incorporate that element via print or metal!

Elly - I love the idea of posting artistic inspiration (so I'm going to copy it). I'm definitely getting a clearer sense of your style through your description.

Here's my list:
Colors:
Neutrals: Black, white, charcoal gray
Secondary neutrals: Olive
Colors: Cherry red, burgundy, deep purple, magenta, nearly all shades of teal, aqua, cobalt blue. Rich, saturated colors.
Accent colors: Orange, green (cool shades)
Colors to avoid: All pastels (with the exception of some blue-greens), earth tones, taupe/beige
Jewelry: Brushed metals (silver, gold), wood, leather, stone

Elements of love:
Soft fabrics, movement, natural elements, unexpected juxtapositions, scarves, eye-catching shoes, feminine shapes, bold colors, abstract patterns, dramatic pieces

And, I've included a few images that inspire me.

You would not, by the way, have any notion of this based on the way that I actually dress, which is why I posted images that are not WIW.

Wow - I am so impressed by these lists and that you have a clear vision of what styles and colours you are inspired to wear.

You've inspired me to put some thought into what mine would be - sadly words like "practical", "crinkle and stain resistant" and "cool" (as in temperature) are the initial descriptions that came to mind rather than all the delicious colours and textures and elements that you have listed. Surely I can come up with something a tad more creative than that! :-)

Lynne, I really don't have any WIW pics to share. I only recently started taking pics and most of them have been of experiments and not necessarily indicative of my vibe. I'll gladly post some pictures of Georgia O'Keeffe paintings and some other inspirations though. I actually spent a couple of hours last night looking for outfit photos on the net, but I just wasn't happy with anything I found.

The first three are Georgia O'Keeffe paintings. To me my style is suiting slacks paired with a chambray or denim shirt and a heavy leather belt. It is a simple sheath or sundress with a jean jacket and boots. A black cowl neck with black slacks or skinnies topped of with saddle stitched cowboy boots and hammered metal jewelry or chunky turquoise. An olive button down with jeans and a peruvian or indian scarf.

Angie, if you have time to skim the above, can you comment on how it fits in to the YLF persona's? I can relate a bit to all of them....Natural, Bohemian, Trendy, Classic ????

I really want to fill out this list (Aida - it's brilliant!!!). I suspect mine will look somewhat similar to yours Lynne. I'll try to get to it sometime later today, or maybe over the weekend. I really like seeing other people's lists, too.

!! I'm amazed that so many of you liked my colors/elements list idea and am SO happy so many of you are finding it helpful Now if only I could come up with MY label.....

Lynne, your list seems spot on and Natural Luxe sounds perfect for you. Your colors certainly reflect your inspirations (and I must say, it is SUCH a lovely soft palette!). Looking forward to continuing seeing this in action.

That list needs to go into a workbook somewhere! Natural Luxe seems perfect for you, based on the photos you posted -- another success! I'm curious and excited to see how this will help us all zero in on the perfect new pieces to add for the coming seasons.

There is just no way I can be this analytical about it. I use up all my precision for my work and have none left for home! I love your pictures though. Awhile ago Angie dispensed three style adjectives per person or so, and I have to say that as silly as it sounds having a label really helps me.

Nice exercise in breaking down the elements of your style! Isn't it great now that you have a focus for how to shop and style your outfits. It's also a great way to translate inspired looks to ones that fit you.

From my year here at YLF and taking outfit pics, I've narrowed down my style to playful, casual, feminine. This way I can still wear a variety of looks, but tailor it to fit me with these three adjectives. Here is an example of a recent inspired look and how I translated it.

(Inspired look by Kendi.)

I loved this idea, and it's so fun to see others doing it. I have been meaning to sit down and do it myself. It would be fun to include this kind of information in our profiles so other people can find it easily for reference.
