Thanks, everyone, for the good wishes for the interview. Encouragement is so nice to hear!

Toronto, hang on --it's a little bumpy right now ;)

Karen 13, didn't you wind up with something berry too for your fall parties?

Sal, I hear you on wardrobe simplification!

Style Fan, thus far, they don't have the coherency of Anchie's modified Vivienne capsules, but who knows, maybe I'll get there.

Btw, I just went back to get the post about the original berry capsule and am amazed at the continuity. At the end of that post, I mused that to make it more career- and cold-weather friendly, I should replace the black pedal pushers and olive shorts, maybe with black pants and a midi olive skirt. I wasn't thinking of that in the fall, but somehow bought black and green pants, which are pretty close to that idea. Maybe I am learning/developing something here. Thanks!

This is all well thought out, FashIntern. You need a year of living in a new country and climate to nail down your wardrobe needs effectively. And once you know the dress code of your job, you can pander to your wardrobe needs even further.

Great idea adding items that can be dressed up or down in order to maximize their mileage. Dressier items can always be dressed down with jeans and sneaks, so that's handy.

Thanks Bijou! It may take a few steps to get to "the job". Next week I'm interviewing for a job where I worked during diss research. It is stultifying and does not help build the world we want to live in. But it will pay the bills, and will get us into the German system, so we have public health insurance and so I can use the national employment agency to find the job I really want.

I mentioned flexibility under "subtraction" but maybe didn't emphasize it enough. This job (which I don't have yet) is in tech, so very casual attire, but a policy job would be a bit more formal. That blue skirt, I think, will work for both. I can wear it with boots & a sweater (as shown on their website) or with pumps and a blazer. Then blazer is dressy, but it's more casual if I wear it with jeans. And then jeans are.... never formal. That's the end of that chain. But you see what I mean. Adaptability, patience, and going one step at a time are key for me this year.

Yes, things that are basic/neutral BUT interesting- whether they be shoes or clothing- are so great. I find I am not using my items that are just blah basics. I have to force myself to get rid of them though....”but dark jeans! Won’t dark jeans always be useful?” Apparently they are not useful to me, as I will ALWAYS reach for something more interesting.

Ooh, berry tones would look good on you, Suz! I'm pretty confident the blue skirt will work out. I ordered it this fall at full price, but got the wrong color. I returned it and asked for this color, but between moving and fall break, the package never made it to me and was returned to sender. Anyway, I know the quality of the other one and how it fit, so have a good feeling about this one. Interesting idea about the jewelry. I see all kinds of jewelry makers and vintage jewelry sellers in shops and at markets. I rarely slow down enough to look closely, because the idea of figuring out quality/price is intimidating to me. Here are a couple of berry finds you might like.

I'm all in favour of looking for interesting footwear. It can do so much for an outfit, not to mention a mood. After all, we see our own shoes more than almost anything else we wear. Why not have something interesting to look at?

I like the blue skirt in the Finds -- I hope it works out. And I'm a huge fan of berry tones. I don't own enough of them at the moment because they've been tricky to find the past few years. When they appear again I will be stocking up.

Great idea to look for local designers. If buying the clothes is prohibitive there might be some jewellery designers or accessories makers who hit your fancy.

Brooklyn, now I'm more excited about the things I've ordered, including a couple of white tops with some "special" detail. I don't think of Berlin winter as that frigid, mostly "just" down to freezing, but windy, long, and pretty dark. But with climate change, who knows?

I like the idea of lurking quirk. I love pattern but tend to overstock on it. One of the things I want to do this year is focus on adding plain items that have interesting texture or very subtle pattern. These items can be much more versatile than true patterned items. Good luck with it!

I like your berry capsule idea and finding pieces with special details Definitely a good idea to wait on removing anything till everything shakes out workwise. Depending on your winters, you may need to think of them in 2 categories: regular winter (cold but above freezing), and bitter cold deep winter/snow-ice.

MsLuna, thanks for the labels. I like interesting and multifunctional, so will have to check them out. As for that print, they made not one but two dresses in it! I think you'll probably like the Bethany (the first link here) better, but here they both are. There's also a velvet skirt, in case anyone else is looking, lol. https://www.whitestuff.com/de/.....any-dress/

https://www.whitestuff.com/de/.....cky-dress/

Smittie and Rachylou, glad you like the capsules idea. I figure I won't go hog wild that way, but will still have some freedom.

I really like the items in a Finds. Very nice berry colours.
Your skirts plan also works out well. There’s some structure (I.e.: a limited skirt capsule) on top of which you can add some creativity (tops in a variety of jewel tones).
Sounds good!

I really like your idea here of assigning what you’ve got to two goal capsules. That makes things very clear for... me. Lol, it’s all about me

Haha! Yes, I liked the skirt because I liked the print a lot! I don’t wear skirts as I find them tricky to wear with my body type (and I personally can’t be bothered trying these days). That print would look amazing on a shift dress though, which is something I’d wear!

I wish I had pics for you, but I don’t. It’s really difficult to take full body shots where I’m at now (unless I’m in a store trying clothes on). The brands I discovered have more basics than unique pieces though they are interesting! I am personally a fan of Miik (a Toronto-based company) and Encircled (also based in Toronto). They have some lovely multi-way/multifunctional basics. Some items just didn’t work for me, but I have some pieces I’ve had for 2-3 years now (like Miik’s blazers and their Lisa 2 leggings).

Thanks MsLuna! I know you "liked" the find for that skirt. It is sold out at that link, but available at the label that makes it https://www.whitestuff.com/de/.....int-skirt/
Out of curiosity, I'd love to see some of the things you get from Canadian makers, and your quirk and super shoes.

Thanks for sharing! Love the Super Shoes concept and the “lurking quirk”. I find that personally, these small unique details is what make an item (or one’s personal style) interesting. You can still have a classic cut piece but the “quirk” gives it more personality. Unexpected shoe choices are great for that as well!

It is also worthwhile getting to know the local designers. I’ve spent the last few years getting to know different independent Canadian brands, try their products and see what works for me. Granted, I’ve made a lot of expensive mistakes, but in the end, I found some go-to brands that work very well and are durable (plus, shipping from online stores is not a pain since they are local).

My biggest style goal this year is to have a wardrobe that supports my life and feels effortless when I'm getting dressed. As my life is still evolving, I can't nail down specific items that I need to buy or holes to fill, so here's what I plan to keep in mind:

Wardrobe coherence, focusing on 2 capsules for winter & shoulder seasons:
1) the berry capsule I developed fall of 2017, and have added a few extra things to https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....st-1868027 https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....st-1867963. I'd like to be able to pull together old and new to make tonally matching outfits. That means at least one skirt or pair of pants, possibly a blazer (like that raspberry S. Oliver black label one with shawl collar, or maybe like the pink Only blazer--both are now sold out), and there is a sweater that I may need to replace. This is as close as I get to earth tones; the green pants I got last fall tend to work with this capsule, as do my brown leggings.
2) black and white skirts and dresses. I don't need any more of them, but I like to wear them with jewel tones and other strong colors, and can add more of those. The black pants I got last fall fit with this capsule.

Super shoes. I'm having fun with my red boots and metallic boots. I want to move away from drab and practical to make more interesting choices in footwear. Two things I need to look for are adequate padding and low enough heel height. Walking in heels isn't a problem for me, and I don't have any shoes I can't run in (yes, they've all been tested), but I also want to avoid the kind of lower back pain docs say high heels can cause.

More "lurking quirk". I like patterns, but I also like the kind of detail you might not notice at first, whether it's jacquard fabric, stitching along the hem, or just gorgeous fabric. When adding new things, I should remember to look for these more interesting options, just like with the shoes.

Subtracting. Nah. Not until life settles down with our own place and a predictable job. For now, anything I get must be able to be dressed up or down. There are quite a few things I haven't worn yet, so I might be ready for a purge in the fall, or maybe not. No point in rushing myself to dump things I might need to replace later, because

Clothing and fashion are much lower priority than getting, furnishing, and decorating our own place, and building savings back up again. This means patience, since I want to get things that are well-made and avoid the fast fashion kinds of items that are more likely to be made in sweatshops. Some things will just be out of reach, like the first three finds here, but others, like the blue skirt, will come down to my price range. (That skirt and several other clearance items are on their way here now.)

Storage as decor. Since I'll be putting together a new closet, why NOT make it one I'll be happy just looking at, because its lovely organization is soothing? I want to wear jewelry more; that will be facilitated by hanging some of it up on display, while things strung on threads will be just below, probably in the top drawer of a dresser that has drawers for pjs/lounge clothes, workout clothes, and all the undies & base layers. Right now, my sweaters are on a bottom shelf, which does not encourage me to pull out anything I haven't worn recently, so they will go on a shelf around eye level, above hanging things. The "closet" will most likely be Ikea Ivar shelves--not expensive, but adaptable enough to provide numerous types of storage once I add a hanging rod.

As fall rolls around, I hope to be exploring "new" ways of shopping:
-I've tossed around the idea of a jacket/blazer/cardi for my festive capsule, but can't justify the expense--this is likely to be my first second hand purchase as I explore thrift shops.
-I'm becoming aware of local clothing designers and producers, some with their own boutiques, others who are at markets and have websites where one can get in touch with them later. I want to become familiar with them, and develop a few favorites.

Maybe my word for the year should be patience! Or #1Step@aTime ;)
