Great plan, colors, discipline!

I hadn’t been thinking much on new comes since I needed to updat some basics and actually add more berry items if I can find them. But adding a bit of accent color would be fun and a way to dabble in the trends.

You have a well thought out plan. My general goal is to lighten and brighten my fall/ winter wardrobe. I would like to expand my rust/ bittersweet capsule and add more taupe if I can find it. I do not need more grey, black, burgundy or olive, scarves or booties. I would like to add a striped sweater in colors of the Southwest, fall florals and maybe plaid, a mustard pair of jeans or trousers and loafers, maybe a belt. A clear yellow would be even better but I don't see it anywhere.
I like your turquoise. Usually my navy does not come out until after the holidays. Maybe I should play with it for fall. I got sick of wearing navy and burgundy winter clothes in the 70's and am still hesitant to pair these colors.

Update: I haven't made any headway on adding colour yet, but I do have a couple pairs of pants on the way. Everlane released their straight leg jeans in faded black -- perfect for me -- so I went ahead and ordered a pair right away (I have the solid black already and love the way they fit, and the quality is really good for the price). Boden released their cords in navy, so I have the 2R and the 4R on the way to see which fits better, plus a turtleneck to try out (my hopes are not high because I've tried on so many turtlenecks that are off in some way, but fingers crossed).

That's a lot of black and navy! Now to find some mustard, cinnamon and toffee (yum) to go with all those neutrals. I do need to replace my messenger bag, and maybe that will be an opportunity to inject some colour. The golden brown Everlane backpack has been calling my name...

Love the color palette! I too am feeling the earthy brights, and want to add bright mallard teal and amber yellow too. Tall dressy boots-booties in warm tones too. And deep winter dressy work clothes, velvet if possible. And mules, slingbacks to replace my transitional shoes.
My do not buy list:
Greys, blues (except bright teal), light or muted colors. i need warmth and saturated colors.
Bell sleeves, i love them but have a lot. Eventually the trend will end.
Blazers, just feeling too androgynous for my style (except for my lace one!).
Pants/jeans/leggings-i bought a lot this year. Sorted!
Transitional shoes that are not mules/slingbacks-limited season of wear and i need to accept my 6a heels. They never fit, even with heel grips.
Skirts that do not taper- it makes such a difference.
Bulky, heavily textured sweaters-every time i own one i feel frumpy and pass it on

I love the colour combination created by the first set of photos and finds. Fabulous. Of course, I’m attracted to those boots and the bag the most, although those tobacco pants are a close second.

Sounds like you’ve got a fun and interesting wardrobe coming up for fall.

As for me, I am definitely doing some distressed denim and am trying to keep the colour palette tight (black, navy and pearl). I might try an interesting wildcard (like some sort of furry vest, or long line vest). Maybe some pattern.

I'm certain this plan will evolve over the next few months. Who knows whether the items I love in the abstract will work once I try them on. But I have to have a starting point to push myself in a certain direction, otherwise I'll default to the same things over and over (see Do Not Buy list). Basically, anything I add at this point has to inject a little newness but still play nicely with what I have. Trying to stay ahead of the style rut, you know. ;)

It's funny, I've been opposed to tans and cognacs for a long time (for myself), but as soon as I started thinking of them as accent colours, brights rather than neutrals, I started to get really excited about them. It's as if I've cracked a code or something!

Having a Do Not Buy list is very important, especially when I'm about to head out on a trip. It helps to prevent "souvenir goggles" and keeps me from making impulse purchases while I'm traveling.

Fantastic post, La Pedestrienne. I am right there with you in thinking about fall, but not shopping yet.

I love your "earthy brights" palette. Those warm colors are not quite right for me (although I think I'm going to steal "cornflower blue," see below). I think my palette is more like "autumnal jewel tones."

My goals are:

-To work out how to build a seasonal capsule wardrobe from a collection of complements. Right now I think my palette is:
Neutrals: Black, Cool grays, Navy/denim, Burgundy
Major colors: Teal, Forest/Bottle green, Rose
Minor colors: Plum, White/cream, Cornflower blue
I have some of each of these colors in my wardrobe now. The task is to go from the current catch-as-catch-can situation to a collection of better thought-out complements of different sizes.

-Be alert for opportunities to refine my jeans capsule. I would like a pair of gray skinnies, and medium-wash and dark gray/faded black straights.

-Add more menswear-inspired shoes. Maybe a pair of cognac brogues, and have my nut-brown loafers dyed burgundy. Also open to adding a pair of burgundy tall boots, and/or replacing my gray ones. I do not need more ankle boots.

-As ever, be on the lookout for tops, especially in colors (vs. neutrals) and season-defining prints. Also a skirt and/or dress in a season-defining print would be fantastic, but the probability of finding something in the real world that matches the very distinct picture in my head seems low.

-Figure out how to wear straight-legged jeans, as a break from my usual big-sweater-over-skinnies silhouette. (I know it sounds weird, but I often feel not quite right in these outfits, like I just haven't nailed the formula yet.) To that end, wear straight-leg pants once a week. Twice if I add another pair of straight-leg jeans.

I'm impressed at the thought you've already put into this! Despite shopping NAS, I have not put much thought into F/W goals apart from knowing that I want a good waterproof coat and I am also tempted by that Boden. Like you, I have a need for a great navy t-neck. The ones I got last year from BR did not make me happy. I haven't yet focused on colour but that might be smart. Red was last year's focus and I was happy with my red additions.

I haven't really thought much about my goals for fall/winter yet, in part because of longer-term location issues being up in the air. It occurs to me, though, that if a more mild climate is in my future, it would be better to shop early in the season, as those transitional items would work all winter.

I like your plan - and nodded along with a lot of it for myself. I'm with you on the earthy brights colour scheme in particular, and the never ending search for the perfect navy boot. I'm personally looking to add in a navy athletic-inspired topper of some sort (for one of my jobs) ...either a sweater or a zip-up jacket of some sort. I'm not shopping for at least another month too - need to let summer die out and then start looking at my fall clothes to see what is what .

I’ll be away from home for much of August, so I figured I’d write these down while I have a bit of spare time. I have very colour-driven goals this year! My wardrobe is pretty full right now (full of stuff I love!), and I’m not in *need* of much of anything at this point. So this is purely a matter of updating with a handful of items that will work with what I have. I don’t think I’ll be changing up silhouettes very much. I’m pretty happy with a mix of wide-leg and straight-leg pants, tailored and fitted tops, structured toppers, plus a small capsule of cozy dresses and leggings. I won't be shopping until late August/Labor Day, unless I get very lucky and see something perfect while traveling (we'll mostly be in the woods, but do have a few city days planned as well).

Add some “earthy brights” -- warmer shades such as toffee, cinnamon, rust, camel, possibly mustard -- to compliment black, navy and charcoal. Particularly interested in leather and knitwear for this category, but skirts/pants might be an option too. I like the idea of white and dusty/cornflower blue as accent colours here. I already have a pair of rust-coloured culottes that I really enjoy for transitional weather, usually paired with black/white tops/toppers. A lightweight skirt for warmer weather and a full-length pair of pants for cooler weather might be an easy way to round out this capsule and adapt the basic formula for different seasons. If I add any more shoes, I’d like them to be white or brown/tan -- no need for more black right now. I’m still looking for my perfect pair of ink/navy ankle boots, but will not be actively hunting for them this year. My two pairs of burgundy boots will suffice.

Build on my burgundy/blush capsule. Again, I love the way these colours look with black, navy and charcoal, which comprise a large portion of my wardrobe. I also like to throw in some red for a tonal look, and most of my red comes out to play in cooler weather. This is a fun capsule as I now have two pairs of burgundy boots, one pair of dark red boots *and* a pair of suede blush flats, which gives me lots of outfit options for this palette, for all different types of weather. A non-gear raincoat has been on my list for awhile (I find I wear out the waterproof laminate really quickly when I wear my Gore-Tex type coats around town all the time), and the burgundy polka dots from Boden really appeal.

Look for black and navy “essential” tops. I’d really like to find a cozy navy topper -- *not* a structured blazer (though I’m tempted by all the navy pinstripes out there), probably a chunky knit cardigan (like an Irish fisherman’s sweater or Norwegian birdseye sweater), but a sweater vest or knit blazer/moto might also be options. I’d also really like to find *my* perfect black turtleneck, and if I find one I like would be prepared to duplicate in navy. It might not even be a true turtleneck, but a mockneck or high crewneck in a substantial cotton-rich rib knit.

Do NOT add: denim (would make an exception for gray or dark-rinse straight legs that fit perfectly), wool trousers, flannel shirts, t-shirts, hoodies, loungewear, leggings, lightweight layering sweaters, insulating base-layers, puffies (or, really, coats in general unless I find something absolutely amazing and special), winter accessories. Any closed-toe shoes/boots I add must accommodate thick wool socks. I have too many pairs of shoes that are only good for transitional wear because I can only wear them barefoot or with the thinnest socks.

Attaching a bunch of images and Finds for inspo. Anyone else formulating a game plan for the upcoming season?
